Clear-Eyed Views of an Evil Goddess in All Her Glory By Neodoering This delightful book discusses the Hawaiian volcano goddess, Pele, and her sister Hiiaka and her enemy, the snow goddess Poliahu. There are retellings of several dozen Hawaiian myths and legends discussing the volcano goddess and the people she has interacted with and mostly killed. Pele comes across as an evil creature in this book, scheming and full of hate, and even her baby sister Hiiaka is not immune to her tantrums and fits of rage. The old Hawaiians were certainly not sentimental about the power of volcanoes! The end of the book is taken up with a discussion of the volcanoes of Hawaii and the study of volcanology and its history in the Hawaiian Islands.I found this book to be a lot of fun, and I recommend it heartily. I knew next to nothing about Pele before I found this book at the local library, and dug in. I read this book to get background for a short story I wished to write about Pele and found it to be packed with useful information. If you're curious about what the old legends concerning Pele had to say, this book will inform you. As to more modern, New Age interpretations of Pele, this book is not a good resource. It was written a long time ago, before the New Age reinterpretations of Pele came out, and concerns the Native Hawaiian view of the volcano goddess and her closest family. A great romp through the mythology of old Hawaii, and have a good time of it!

If you purchased this book because, like me, you grew up with the original hardcover editions (printed between 1963 and 1975), this is NOT the same. The pictures are missing. In fact, there are no illustrations in this book. There is no Table of Contents so you can't turn quickly to your favorite stories. A cheap knock-off of the originals!
