German wunderkind writes teenage novel in German, inadvertently creating a teenage Easy Reader By MisterBrownie Finally found a short German novel (in German) that my teenage daughter enjoyed reading which is why I decided to post a recommendation. Taking a closer look, I discovered that apparently the author is a young girl, and at the time of publishing (May 2015), she is only 13 years old: some German wunderkind living near Munich in Bavaria. The book is not created as an Easy Reader German, that seems to be an accidental by-product. Absolutely amazing.

The first half of this fun book follows two women, Gayle Bruns and Dana Dolan, as they wend their way through their wold lives in the Swinging Sixties. They were always on the cutting edge, so you'll experience with them what that decade was most famous for - sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Traveling in the most exclusive circles, they were always dressed the part because they worked at Paraphernalia, the wildest boutique ever. When they left Paraphernalia, they went their separate ways, so the book then follows Dana until the present day. She continued her amazing life traveling the world, working in exciting jobs, and always breaking society's barriers. Undoubtedly these are lives well lived!

Fun and intersting book about the lives of two young women By Arlene Leuzzi Interesting and fun book about young life in the 60's and 70's; the excitement of the British rock invasion, clothing, rock stars and drugs. The book follows two young women who break barriers and have some wild times. An easy read with lots of tidbits to entice the reader to understand those decades and follow one of the women's life to date. Recommend to pour a nice glass of wine, sit back and enjoy.

Dolan's a real-life Zelig - having put herself in the right places at the right time (and occasionally the wrong ones). The book's riddled with spicy celeb antics, plenty of gentle tickles and a few very human tears. Makes for a light, bright weekend's read. Thoroughly enjoyable.

By artgurl If you've lived through the '60's and 70's, when women were restricted by cultural and religious mores, Dana captures the 'wild' side by depicting her escapades in the true pursuit of the emerging feminist movement. She shows the reader what a free spirit was able to accomplish with a little bit of daring and an abundance of curiosity. A fun read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. couldn't put this book down! By matthew d kirk Although I was given a bit of a spoiler, I found that I couldn't put this book down! Green Girl is a great read. The author's background as a science teacher shows in her clear and exhaustive voice. Sara Mariam Tagalbi paints a vivid picture through her descriptive writing of a young girl who finds her strength through adversity in a land of mystery and enchantment. The heart wrenching story of Allanas contains some adult situations that may be challenging, but not necessarily inappropriate for younger readers. I look forward to the second book!

I really enjoyed the way it kept holding me in my seat wanting to know what happened next. There are a lot of quick turns in the plot line which make it very interesting but you do not get lost in the story; its very straightforward. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys adventure and fantasy. It reminds me a lot of the main characters in Wheel of Time series and how they explore themselves and their sense of purpose. I am very much looking forward to the next book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fresh Air! By Rachael Cramer This book is a breath of fresh air for this genre and fiction in general. Instead of the same old predictable story lines that leave the reader knowing what is going to happen on the next page, Green Girl has new and imaginative twists. The writer's descriptive style paints a world and characters that I'm so excited to continue with in further novels.

Which honestly, I knew nothing about. But I even more enjoyed the adventures overseas. I do look forward to an autobiography from David's wife, Karen, to hear the other half of the story.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, well written 5 stars By Amazon Customer I would endorse the comments of the two earlier reviewers. However, in so doing, I would say that this book is not “debris from a sinking ship” i.e. Flotsam. Rather it is the account of a man who has been successful in two totally different careers, and one who has a remarkable memory for detail. It is both interesting and entertaining. On the one hand there is the cowboy cum partner of a cattle feeder business in Colorado and later in Russia. On the other is the academic economist at home as student at London School of Economics, and professor at Berkley, Colorado State and the International Water Management Institute in Sri Lanka. In this latter role he is concerned with the broader issues of agricultural and economic development. But he occasionally stops to do something practical like inventing a gadget for squaring the circle on pivot irrigation. Those who have met of even known the author on his travels around the globe may only know one half of the story, either the business man or the academic. They will have to read this book for the rest of the story. Finally, the one common denominator, where-ever Seckler traveled it seems that the people drank a lot. However, I am sure that his 4 to 9 AM working hours were never disturbed by a hangover. Workaholic-yes; alcoholic-noRandy Barker

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An American Life Generates a Great Read By Peter Lydon Highly recommended, and hard to put down. These salty, sardonic recollections of an American who has led an adventurous and perceptive life both at home and abroad are a page-turner. From a farming and farm business family background in Colorado, David Seckler was untypical enough to be reading Kant before he finished high school. He went on, via the London School of Economics and a published dissertation study on Thorstein Veblen, to be an econ professor at Colorado State and Berkeley, and an international water expert travelling the world and then running an important irrigation institute in Sri Lanka. He reports vivid experiences along the way, not only in his family and businesses in the United States, but in India and Bangladesh, Africa, the Soviet Union and other countries. It becomes clear that Seckler is one of the technical and economic experts, far from faceless, who created the modern world economy, especially its agricultural side, with lots of intense “learning experiences” along the way, recounted here with panache and zing.

However, there were too many editing errors such as mistyped words, i.e. the spelling a a word was correct but it was the wrong word for the sentence. One place a sentence was duplicated. Hence the 4 stars.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fast read but lacking real substance By CarolinaGirl Valiant effort from a fan of Rysa Walker's. Lots of grammatical issues but story moves well. Could use more substance and less history.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Fun Little Adventure Through Time By Dan Absalonson This was a fun little twist on a classic tale with a splash of Sci-Fi. It flowed pretty well and before I knew it I was done reading it. I liked some of the details about the characters, especially the first time the main character Merlin is described.Merlin is a Chronos agent. Their job is to go back in history to see if things really happened how the history books say they did without making history themselves. Merlin gets to go back in time to see if King Arthur was a real guy so you get to go on an adventure through time with Merlin and visit Camelot. It was fun going with the character back and forth in time and seeing how he dealt with unexpected problems that came up. A fun little read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fun, sassy By Amazon Customer This was fast, fun, sassy, and an enjoyable short, even though I'm not the target audience. Definitely would read more Evie Jones stories after this. Amie's characters always feel three-dimensional, even within the fantastic adventures they find themselves in. She does this through natural, fast-paced dialogue and humorous inner-monologues. Although Evie is quite at home in a 16-page story, you get the feeling she could have a lot of fun in a full-length novel. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who likes magical realism and is looking to kill a quarter of an hour on a rainy night.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A quick, fun interlude.... By Neva Li Evie Jones is fun - and the two shorts that have been published to date have whet my appetite for further adventures. I do not usually do any reading in the magic genre, but the combination of short, fun, smart, and Evie bring it together and make it work.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This was a fun read. I was drawn in by the characters By Samantha Hammond This was a fun read. I was drawn in by the characters, especially Evie with her quirks and spunky attitude. The pages turned quickly and it was over before I knew it. A great story to start setting the mood for Halloween.

A Borrowed Man: a new science fiction novel, from Gene Wolfe, the celebrated author of the Book of the New Sun series.

It is perhaps a hundred years in the future, our civilization is gone, and another is in place in North America, but it retains many familiar things and structures. Although the population is now small, there is advanced technology, there are robots, and there are clones.

E. A. Smithe is a borrowed person. He is a clone who lives on a third-tier shelf in a public library, and his personality is an uploaded recording of a deceased mystery writer. Smithe is a piece of property, not a legal human.

A wealthy patron, Colette Coldbrook, takes him from the library because he is the surviving personality of the author of Murder on Mars. A physical copy of that book was in the possession of her murdered father, and it contains an important secret, the key to immense family wealth. It is lost, and Colette is afraid of the police. She borrows Smithe to help her find the book and to find out what the secret is. And then the plot gets complicated.

By Dan'l Danehy-Oakes The arrival of a new Gene Wolfe book chez moi is always cause for some celebration, and this is no exception. Wolfe, for the two or three of you who don't know, is one of the few SFF writers who manage to be entertaining, puzzling, and literarily non-embarrassing all at the same time. He's just really, really _good_._A Borrowed Man_ is the story of mystery writer E.A. Smithe, or rather of his "reclone," living on a shelf in the Spice Grove Public Library. In this particular future - it appears to be the late 22nd century - most of humanity's problems have been solved: the population is down to about a billion, there is no war, etc. There are cracks in this utopian facade, though. One is the existence of carefully-hidden poverty; another is the institutionalization of people who are "defective."And a third is the reclone problem. Famous people - mostly authors and artists - from the relatively recent past have been scanned and force-cloned, and their clones have had their brains filled with the scans of their originals, with some small alterations - the most important of which is that they can create no new works.Oh, and they're property, not legally human. E.A. Smithe resents this, but not as much as you'd think; probably because they've altered his scan to make it impossible for him to really rebel. As the book begins, he's checked out of the library by Colette Coldbrook, who (she says) wants him to find the secret of a book. The book happens to be one of Smithe's own, _Murder On Mars_, which he barely recalls writing. It was (she tells him) the only thing in the safe of her late father, a very successful and rich man.Colette's brother is also dead, she tells him, strangled to death in the entryway of the family mansion. There seems to be nothing special about this book - though it appears to be the only surviving copy! - and would E.A. Smithe please help her figure out why it was in the safe?Well, Smithe is only too pleased (or is conditioned to be pleased) to help a library patron, so he sets out to solve the problem. She fills him in on some details in a location where she hopes there are no bugs, then takes him back to her apartment - no hanky-panky, mind - where they are attacked, stripped, and tied to chairs by Persons Unknown, who tear the apartment apart looking for the book. Fortunately, Smithe has found a rather clever hiding place which they do not find.Next they head for the family mansion and Smithe learns a few more things - most notably, that there are locked rooms that nobody in the family but Daddy could enter, and nobody has been able to figure out how to enter them. The reader will assume at this point that the book has something to do with those rooms, and the reader will be right.Anyway, Colette disappears, Smithe checks himself back into the library (though not without incident) and he is soon checked out again by some police who work him over trying to learn Colette's whereabouts.I think that's enough plot summary. As you can tell, it is - as usually for Wolfe - a tangled and recomplicated plot, and while everything I told you above is true, some of it is misleading because I don't want to give away the end of what is, in the end, primarily a mystery story.I enjoyed it heartily and shall again.

This book was more tedious than anything else. I found the narrative style to be repetitive, fussy, and just plain boring. Yes the book has some scifi elements, but nothing earth-shattering and I wouldn't call it a science fiction book per se. As others have said it's basically a mystery, but since the characters are poorly developed and the narrator is downright annoying it's hard to care whodunit. I was really looking forward to this and am very disappointed. "The Fifth Head of Cerberus" it ain't.

I have gone from casually listing him among favorites and giving small praise when due, to outright forcing him onto people who maybe weren't even ready. I can actually say how I feel about him as an author has made me question friendships with those who "just couldn't get it" or whatever other poor excuse left them bereft of the wonder that is Book Of The New Sun (or a cacophony of others). Its a powerful thing. Very obviously, I was excited by this upcoming novel. All of the aforementioned adoration pushed me much further through this book than I even wanted to go. The main character and narrator of the novel is a "reclone" of a mediocre mystery author, which very obtusely makes the narration of the story...mediocre. I've never felt this way about Wolfe. I'll take his earlier work as no less than it is, but this one is just a surprising dud for me.
