I still haven’t read the first, but I reviewed (and enjoyed) the second book here. It’s been a few years since the Flare knocked out all the electricity. Long enough for small power grids to come back on. Long enough for Maggie, the youngest Seong sibling, to get her GED, learn to play the guitar really well, and head off to college.As the story opens, Maggie is chopping off all of her hair. It’s been her most complimented feature, and she hid behind it a lot. Now that she’s going away to college, she’s ready for a new, more powerful identity.Her brother’s friend Edwin is driving her there. Maggie has had kind of a crush on Edwin for a while, but he rejected her, so she’s working on getting over it.“I didn’t want to be that creep, fawning over someone with the hopes that one day I’d beat them into submission and they’d settle for me. What kind of love song would that make? ‘It only took ten years, of you living in fear, but finally you’re mine, baby, please stop crying…’”Maggie has the Seong sarcasm down. When a girl in the dorm assumes that Maggie loves anime because she’s Korean, Maggie says, “Okay. Am I supposed to ask you for the mayonnaise-based recipes of your people now?” I could fill this whole review with Maggie quotes. She’s tough. She’s adapting. She’s learning to use her words.On her first day in the dorm, Maggie runs into Devon, the internet boyfriend she never met in person whom she thought was dead. Yeah, that’s a lot of emotional drama right there, and it kicked me in the gut. It’s like her teenage fantasy come to life, and then he kisses her. She takes a moment to swoon, but then it’s back to using her words, trying to find out what happened to him.Don’t worry, Maggie doesn’t spend all of her time torn between Devon and Edwin. She’s more focused on finding her way in the world. She gets a job, she writes songs, and she texts her family members. She spends time with both guys and discovers qualities that she values in a person. She is also always on guard, well aware that there are power-tripping, smarmy, objectifying men all around her.The author blends in some of what’s happening in the rest of the country, too. Maggie’s brother John and his boyfriend Mikael are helping to restore the power grid, but they stop by the cafeteria to tease her about boys and also give her lots of moral support. Edwin works with campus security, and Devon meets up with an environmental group that thinks that going back to the old system is a bad idea. It’s an interesting peek into what-ifs, but it doesn’t detract from the main story about Maggie.This was a fun book with a great narrator. Full disclosure, I did not read the first two books in this series. Whilst it is fine to read this book as a standalone, it is recommended to read the first two books as there are references to previous events and characters.Maggie Seong is a lucky girl. She survived the Flare with her family intact. In addition, her family increases as her brothers get married. Now that things are settling down, her parents are urging her to explore the world by getting the college experience. Maggie is resistant to going off to college. This is not hard to understand as the past four years have been a fight to survive. The safety of her family and home is not something Maggie is willing to leave, just to see more of the world.Fortunately, Maggie doesn't go off to school by herself. Edwin Hernandez takes her to college because he is also going to school there. With the States trying to rebuild, college campuses are key to bringing the power grid back up as well as train the minds of their future… young impressionable college students.I am mixed about this book. I liked the concept. I also liked a couple of the characters. Maggie I could take or leave which is rough because she is the main character. She annoys me which I should have realized if I paid attention to her age. Her lack of age and maturity is not appealing to me in my older age. I'm done with foolish girls making decisions in a hissy fit. Whilst Maggie's character is appropriate for her age, I don't really care for her. She's selfish and careless with her words. Her relationship with Devon, a pre-Flare crush is toxic. But as all young girls, she needs to go through this and learn the hard way.The characters I really liked were Edwin and Danielle. Edwin is the steadfast loyal rational friend. Let me emphasize the world rational. Edwin may just be a couple of years older but he is much more responsible and more caring. Personally I think Danielle and Edwin should get together. Screw Maggie and the chip on her shoulder. Danielle is my favourite character in this book because she is a survivor. She tries hard to be a friend only to receive rejection over and over again.As a total side note and tangent, "Nihao" is not Japanese either. It's Chinese. Maggie should get her Asian languages straight. The irony of Maggie's condescension towards Danielle is amusing. Not sure if Ms. Cole does this on purpose or there was a lack in research. I'm going to hope for the former answer.Overall, this story is predictable in conflict and the villains. The only twist that moved me was Danielle's history. Maggie Seong is my favorite Seong sibling, and Mixed Signals is probably my fave in the series. :) By Chasia Lloyd I love the Seong family so much - they're open about their private lives and always making jokes, but they're intensely devoted to protecting each other, especially in the aftermath of the Flare. So of course I was excited to read the next book in the OFF THE GRID series when I saw it was going to focus on the youngest Seong sibling, Maggie. The world is slowly rebuilding itself and getting back "online", but it's nowhere near what it once was. Guitar-playing Maggie branches away from her family and goes off to college on her own to find her place in the new world - and hopefully have sex for the first time.She's got eyes for the former-military man escorting her to college, Edwin Hernandez, but he seems to treat her more like a kid than he does an adult. Then her world gets turned upside down when she discovers she is attending college with her ex-online boyfriend Devon. And Devon still has feelings for her.The love triangle is exciting enough, but I also adored Maggie's friendship with her roommate Danielle. Danielle is an artist and Japanophile, and the two girls become tight quickly. Danielle only has Maggie's best interest in her heart, and she's soooo sweet. If we could get a Danielle book, I would not be complaining at all!Maggie's goal of losing her virginity really captured my attention. She made it clear from the start she wanted to lose it under her own terms with a person she really liked, and nobody around her who knew shamed her for it. By dara yarosh With a dramatic title like 'Treacherous Obsession', I felt I should take a chance and buy this book. There was no disappointment...I was looking for drama that was realistic and detailed in its descriptions, with a fluid and interesting storyline that ties the entire book together. Mr. Studstill manages to portray personable and vulnerable characters, and doesn't hesitate to show that even the 'good guys' in the book reveal that they too sometimes can do the wrong thing. Yet they still are good people, and isn't that so true in life?I also learned a lot about the legal and political doings and wrongdoings of the Florida legislature and the tobacco industry. Though their combined lack of ethics is no surprise, Mr. Studstill's detailed coverage of this type of corruption made me really open my eyes to how underhanded politics can be.And to add the topping to the sundae, this author doesn't mind spicing up the readers interest by adding some eroticism. He dares to go into some back rooms with the likable Kevin and his love interests. Good job Mr. Studstill!So there you have it folks...descriptive scenes, interesting characters, shady and corrupt politics, and some sex mixed into a recipe to create this delicious book that I definitely recommend to all adults.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read By D. Mellish Treacherous Obsession is a great read. The characters are well-developed and interesting. The dialogue is realistic. The settings are vividly described. Most important, Kevin Charles is a sympathetic and attractive protagonist. I found myself quickly swept up into the unfolding drama of Kevin's personal and legal problems. My almost anxious concern for Kevin's well-being is a testament to Mr. Studstill's skill as a writer. The book is a pleasure to read on so many levels. On one level, it's a compelling exploration of one man's existential predicament and ethical struggles. On another, it's a poignant - as well as erotic - love story. On yet another level, it's powerful social and political commentary, exposing the politics and greed behind Florida's so-called "anti-tobacco" legislation. In sum, I strongly recommend this book. Once you start reading Treacherous Obsession, you won't want to put it down.

It starts a bit slow, but later in the book you understand the circumstances of the beginning.Although this book is a work of fiction, it is based on the state of Florida's amendments allowing the state to sue tobacco companies for the reimbursement of payment made to Medicaid on behalf of Medicaid patients who were receiving treatment as a result of tobacco related illnesses.Treacherous Obsession, is written as if the state of Florida would retain the services of `select private attorneys' for representation and on a contingency payment of attorney fees. It seems this legislation which allows the state to recover the medical expenses of Medicaid patients was created with a plan of cashing in on a legal windfall of money for the state and for the private attorneys which were involved.Kevin Charles is an attorney with basically honest integrity. He is approached to buy in on a lawsuit with other select attorneys in cases which allow court awarded money to the State of Florida from tobacco companies. It was presented to him as a sure thing for a large amount of money. He would be required to contribute $500,000 to the operation expenses for the group of lawyers to proceed. Of course for this to work, certain politicians have to be poised to make sure the legislation is passed. After a couple of meetings with other participating lawyers Kevin feels a hesitancy about this whole set-up and questions the venture with Phil Griffin and Frank Dunn, a couple of his associates who are in 100 percent.In a private meeting, Phil and Hugh Benson have been reassured by the state Attorney General Sean Goodnight, that the Governor and the Senate and Speaker of the House are in agreement in extracting money from the tobacco companies using private trial attorneys rather than using the state attorneys. This will allow for accounting practices which are not audited by the state.Kevin's reluctance is a matter of worry for attorneys, Phil and Hugh. They want to make sure Kevin will not present a problem later.So a secret plan is put into place which should give the men some leverage against Kevin if it is needed as the process proceeds. This plan has no regard for his personal integrity, his family relationship, or his professional career.As you go further into the `plots' in this story, ask yourself, "Does everyone have a price?""How much money would it take for you to agree to frame an innocent person for your own personal gain"?Very clever storyline and holds your attention!(adult situations)

Piepenbrink This is a novella or thereabouts--a story in continuation of her "Antryg and Joanna" stories, and I would strongly recommend reading the first two "Darkmage" stories--Silent Tower and Silicon Mage--before attempting this one. Once you have, the novel Dog Wizard should follow and then the shorts--including this one--may be read in almost any order without great surprises, but you'll enjoy this more with the background.That said, you will enjoy it. Deep it's not--for that you want Dog Wizard--but Hambly is almost incapable of telling a dull story.For the newcomer: Antryg is a mad wizard of great power on a world (ours) where magic doesn't work well. Joanna Sheraton is a pre-Internet computer programmer. In the short stories, it's evident that while we may not believe in magic, magic sometimes believes in us, and that the mark of a wizard is not casting fireballs, but doing something about the situation. Pratchett said something similar in his Tiffany Aching stories--and Schmitz in The Witches of Karres. Don't stint yourself. Read them too.

I love these continuing stories about them. As rough and gritty as their lives have been, no matter how much heartbreak they endure... they never stop trying to do the right thing, no matter what. I highly recommend this and all the author's other stories.

Después de ires y venires, Tessa y Hardin comienzan una turbulenta relación que los pondrá a prueba.La verdad no sé por donde comenzar.Cuando un libro está bien redactado, bien editado, cuando siento que el escritor sabe lo que hace; incluso si no me gusta el libro como tal, siempre le doy tres estrellas, debido a que la percepción buena o mala de la trama es completamente subjetiva y va más allá de la literatura y la gramática, va hasta los gustos individuales de una persona, y solo porque un libro no me guste, no implica que sea malo. Bueno... este lo es.No criticaré la trama. Hay miles, cientos de miles, infinidad de libros basados en el mismo tema, una y otra y otra vez. Niña buena, conoce niño malo, se enamoran, ella quiere cambiarlo, él no se deja hasta que si se deja (o ella se conforma) y vivieron felices por siempre.Dejaré de lado lo tóxica que es la relación entre Tessa y Hardin y me enfocaré netamente en la parte literaria.De un tiempo para acá, se ha perdido el arte de la prosa, se dejó a un lado todos y cada uno de los elementos que conforman un escrito literario, y se enfocó más en alcanzar público con palabras que no añaden nada a la historia, mal utilizadas y situaciones absurdas. Eso dio como resultado que se publicara este libro. La verdad, me gustaría saber si este libro pasó por un editor, debido a que encuentro errores gramáticos que son imperdonables, signos de puntuación mal utilizados, signos de puntuación faltantes, palabras que no cuadran en la prosa y se sienten extremadamente forzadas y, como ya es costumbre, la redundancia.La descripción de personajes tiende a ser muy superficial y muchos de los eventos son bastante predecibles.Tessa tiene problemas de codependencia y una necesidad de aceptación por los demás bastante molesta para un "personaje principal". Por otro lado, mi mayor problema con Hardin, es que si bien no es un Marty-Stu, es aterrador lo predecible y superficial que su personaje es, especialmente cuando no es la intención de la autora. Intenta darle una profundidad y complejidad, y lo que termina haciendo es quitarle credibilidad y patrones de conducta. Si tienes que hacer que tu personaje no sea consistente consigo mismo para darle "profundidad", hay algo malo con tu personaje.Honestamente, no puedo decir más sin meterme directamente en la trama, y dije que no lo haría. Terminé el libro porque considero un pecado empezar uno y abandonarlo, pero juro que estuve a punto de ceder.

For Anyone Who Has Never Been an (Amazon) Affiliate Before By Shelly's Bookstore For the purposes of full disclosure, I downloaded this book while it was being offered one day, free. It's a great book for a beginner to affiliate marketing and it would also be useful to someone who may have worked with another affiliate program but not with Amazon's. The book lays out the basics of the Amazon program, finding a niche, building a website, loading it with Amazon affiliate products and a few ways to feature them on the site as well as some basic ways to promote them/your site. If you're starting from "zero" or if you have a blog but you don't know how to monetize it, this book will help.If you're not new to affiliate marketing, and especially if you're already using Amazon's program, this book probably won't offer you much. I've been working with Amazon for a few years and I came away from this with only a few nuggets of useful information that I wasn't already aware of.

As I get the book on a free day I'll show my appreciation with a positive review. For me, it wouldn't have been worth paying the $4.93 it is currently set at for 24 pages. There are no secrets not readily accessible on the internet here. It is however neatly packaged in one place for the busy person. However the busy person will find faster ways to make money than through Amazon Affiliate marketing. The main purpose, of Affiliate marketing, in my opinion, is to gain an additional small percentage income (and it is small) from something you would have been promoting in your blog or website anyhow. To set up a blog and website for the sole purpose of earning an income through Amazon Affiliate marketing would be one of the slowest routes I know to earn money. But this book certainly tells you how to do it. I'll give it that. It was clear and easy to read.

I was lonely and desperate and missed my mom and my brothers and sisters dreadfully. My relatives shoved me from pillar to post and subjected me to mental and physical abuse. I had no other alternative: I could either swim along or sink. I knew that if I didn’t try to change my circumstances, I risked losing everything—including my sanity—so I made a promise to myself that I would aim for my highest dreams and that I would not give up until I got there. My mom had worked hard to make sure her children were safe and loved and I owed it to her and to myself to carry on. So, I listened to my inner voice. Everyone has an inner voice and you can hear it if you listen carefully. Your inner voice is the voice that tells you what you should be doing with your life. It’s a bit like listening to your heart and following the dreams that are locked inside. Your personal journey may take a long time and you may often feel like you are never going to get to where you want to be. But each time you have to stop along the way, remember where you are going and why you are going there. You have to remain focused and you have to stay determined—never give up on your dreams. My ultimate destination is right here, right now, with you. I am very much in the present and I love who and what I have become. To get here, I literally traveled across continents, climbed mountains, and walked through valleys. Each time I fell down I got back up again. Some of my falls are etched in scars that signify my struggles—some of my scars are visible and some are not obvious to the eye. But each struggle that I endured provided a lesson, and each lesson was necessary for me to be able to become who I am today. “Difficulties are opportunities to better things; they are stepping stones to greater experience. Perhaps someday you will be thankful for some temporary failure in a particular direction. I believe that the challenges I faced, and still face till today, happened so that I could share them with the people who need to gain or reclaim the courage to take that first step. All it takes is one step forward to make a start on your own journey – a journey which will lead you to your true destiny. My life is filled with stories that will prove and assure others that they are not alone in the world. I faced unbearable circumstances so many times in my life, and at other times, unbelievable triumphs. You must keep this in mind during your journey to reach meaningful accomplishments, nothing that is worth anything is ever easy; but through our hardships, through our circumstances, we end up being who we are today. Let your battle scars be your lessons in life; but let them be just that—lessons. Sometimes it is our troubled times that lead us to our next path. In this case, think of your troubles as stepping stones. She captured our imagination, and kept us so hooked that we begin to associate ourselves to her troubled life of the past, because we know that there can never be someone who writes the way she wrote about one’s own life: simple, heart-warming and genuinely truthful and delightful. It is beautiful, adventurous, haunting, charming and have a real sense of innocence and enchantment. Hence if you really are a person with a good-heart, this book is for you, if you work with the poor children, this book is for you. Furthermore, if you also are an educator, a humanitarian, a good parent and in a government, young or old, this book is for you all. Read it and be encouraged.Frankly speaking too, the writing is touching the hearts constantly and the story lines are faithful in structure to the book and still have its sense of adventure. I identified myself with Roman because of her guts, sensitivity and truthfulness and showing it, and also because she perceives the world around her like me in a lot of good ways. I also like her determination to carry the right things out. All in all, the book is great for children and adults because they help to create a sense of right and wrong, introduce them with the world of various human being troubles we might unexpectedly find ourselves in, and, especially, it’s about the importance and the joy of having a family whose significance is presented excellently. Roman appears to have received from nature; patience, endurance and talents of an excellent, perhaps even of a very superior order which devoted to the purposes of any useful profession, must have rendered her a successful and respectable life, if not an eminent citizenship of America. Therefore, I would highly recommend this moving book to be read by all. You won’t regret buying it. Do it!!

The book is a living testimony of faith, miracles, forgiveness, strength, hope, perseverance, courage, and quest for excellence. It inspires any one to shatter self-imposed glass ceilings regardless of current situation or limitations. The principles that she mentioned in her book could be applied in any part of the world or in in any context. Good Read!

An Inpsiring Story From Her Heart By Amazon Customer I know Roman as a colleague from the mastermind she and I were in together, and I have been always impressed by her forthrightness and dedication to her dream. Now, reading her book, I understand where that comes from deep within her.So many people would have given up or given in while enduring the circumstances of her childhood, yet Roman not only persevered...she thrived. Her settings are very descriptive, and she has a different-in-a-good-way of sorting the story, switching from third to first person viewpoint, and telling the story in bits and pieces in a non linear fashion. I was drawn in and interested in the characters and in the past mysteries the narrative kept hinting at, that I couldn't put my ipad down until I knew what happened. The story covers a very long period of time and shows how the choices we make both shape our futures and the the futures of those around us. She did a great job of highlighting each age group of the characters, making them all feel real, and the places she wrote of felt real too. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys family saga stories and deep characters studies, with a bit of mystery thrown in for fun.
