By Michelle Plot Summary (Spoilers): Adam, a low-income high school senior, is frustrated with his mother’s lack of concern and attentiveness, and further enraged by his father’s nightly struggles with drinking. Adam plays the role of “adult,” providing for his sister financially and even doing what he can to care for his mother and father. After a night of tending to his drunken father by scraping together some semblance of dinner for him, Adam visits his girlfriend, Michelle, only to catch her cheating on him. Not wanting to go home, he calls his friend, Doug, and spends the weekend with him—a weekend that is spent mostly alone, but Adam revels in the solace. Impulsively, when the weekend ends he takes a short bus ride to a town he’s never been to before, but the bus breaks down and Adam is forced to wait for the next one—or continue on foot. He chooses the latter, having no idea where he’s headed. The walk is cumbersome, lonely, and dangerous, but Adam continues until a group of hunters threaten his life. After running from them, he falls and injures himself, and ends up passing out in the woods—where Lily, who lives on a horse ranch nearby, finds him and tends to him the next day. Adam settles in, finding work with a local handyman and helping Lily with repairs she’s needed around the house and barn. Adam and Lily soon become intimately involved, but their relationship is tested when her ex-husband returns to the small town.“The Wayward Soul” is an engaging, well-written novel by a first-time author. It was an easy and relaxing yet deeply thought provoking read. Flores’ timeless prose is smooth and polished; he has proven himself to be a talented and well-rounded author with this impressive debut about love, forgiveness, and coming of age. Highly recommended!

There are a lot of negatives in Adam’s life but you don’t see him buckle under them. He works part-time at a pharmacy. He struggles with a teacher who picks on him. He hates going home everyday but tends to his alcoholic father very patiently, and occasionally hands over money to his mother. He catches his girlfriend cheating on him but being the mature guy that he is, he decides not to beat up the guy as it would only lead to a night in jail. But then we see the other side of him where he experiments with smoking, drinking and drugs and later decides he wants to travel alone and explore. The high school environment the author created was so real. I like that he created a very relatable characters. The detailed physical descriptions of the characters help you them everything very easily. The story is very simple, it is nothing that we have not read before but what the author has added is depth. The book absorbs you. I especially liked the very real ending. It demanded another star for the book. After all the high school stories that I read recently, this one was quite refreshing!

By gara The Wayward Soul is a well-written novel by first time author George Flores. With a classic writing style, the story focuses on young Adam, who runs away from home. Not knowing where to go, he starts his journey by buying a bus ticket to a town he's never been to then becomes stranded. He finds himself in the middle of a series of misadventures that ultimately lead him to find love. The author's use of descriptive language and realistic details of the scenarios make you feel as if you are walking along with the character. This is a captivating story with a very realistic ending that's not your typical fairy tail story type where the characters live happily ever after.
