Julian Villafuerte is a founding member of Evolcon Evolution Consulting, a Mexican firm that provides QlikView consulting services throughout the Americas. Since 2010, he has helped several companies define effective strategies for data management and business analysis. As a consultant, Julian has worked in application development, project management, presales, and training for many industries, including retail, manufacturing, and insurance. He has a master's degree in information technology management and teaches at the Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico City. If you liked Packt's other thin QlikView books… By Dimitri Shvorob Packt has published most of the QlikView books out there, starting with the de facto "QlikView bible" by Garcia and Harmsen, and following up with (a) the substantial books by Stephen Redmond and (b) the thin, richly priced books by Karl Pover [ok], Tim Floyd [bad], Diane Blackwood [bad] and Christopher Ilaqua [bad]."Creating Stunning Dashboards With QlikView" joins the (b) camp, and brings its average up. The book has an appealing informal, enthusiastic style, and talks about (i) dashboard design in general (think Tufte ultra-lite), (ii) QlikView's visual elements, and (ii) concrete QlikView tips. It is open-and-shut too sketchy for my taste - I would have gone for Garcia and Harmsen or Redmond; let me call the three authors "GHR" - but here is a more general reservation. By choosing not to discuss data, only the front-end, CSDQV rules itself out as one's "starter" QlikView book: it has to be the second at least. It is too junior for people who had read GHR, or the Wiley-published "QlikView Your Business". Who is left then - people who had gone for the other (b) titles? A suboptimal route if you ask me, but if you must try it, choose Karl Pover's book as its first leg.PS. If you see any odd things in "Comments", that's probably the psycho who has spent days posting offensive comments to my reviews - only for them to be deleted by Amazon - after I criticized an iffy Packt book promoted with questionable five-star reviews. ("R Machine Learning By Example" by Bali and Sarkar, if you are wondering). As long as you know that his "Dimitri Shvorob" is fake, there isn't much harm he can do.

As a QlikView "gun for hire" I often pick up applications created by other developers and find even the most fundamental design errors made time and time again. It is this lack of attention to detail that can often sour peoples experience of QlikView. Simply put, if the document doesn't look nice people will not want to use it, and if they don't use it then it adds very little value.This book focuses on the little details that can lift an application from being average (or worse) to being an application that makes the information jump off the screen. It promotes many of the same principles that I always preach, such as every detail matters and simplicity is king.The book doesn't try to teach you how to use QlikView or give a holistic approach to dashboard design, there are other titles for these things, but it does focus of every individual detail of what you need to get right on each screen.

This steampunk paranormal mix-up is set in a beautifully dark and unique world By Annie Slasher (Booked & Loaded) I received this title from the publisher. All opinions are my own and are not influenced in any way.Wicked Ever After is the fourth book in Delilah S. Dawson’s Blud series. This steampunk paranormal mix-up is set in a beautifully dark and unique world, but this installment left me a bit uneasy.Dawson did something that is not regularly done in paranormal romance. Wicked Ever After tied up not only the HEA, but their future was laid out as well. I cannot say TOO much about that without revealing spoilers galore. Dawson touched on Tish’s inability to reproduce in the first few books, but I don’t remember that being much of a focus, more like a driving force to some of her behaviors and beliefs. However, her reproductive abilities were front and center in this story, leaving me lacking in my ability to relate to the character. I am sure I am the minority that, as a women, my ability to have children, or belief that I could not, never defined so many of my emotions and thoughts. Tish also seemed ridiculously slow to accept facts that those she trusted and cared about repeatedly attempted to tell her. I don’t remember this being a personality trait in the prior books.Part of this final installment included Tish’s grandmother that she brought to Sang and changed, just before she passes away from old age. And wow does that s*** go wrong. Imagine finding out your grandmother, that you had been caring for on your own, really didn’t want much to do with you. The real issue with me was at the basis of the grandmothers thoughts. She seemed to blame Tish for not “really knowing her”, even though she had grownup with her. I hate to say it, but that would be your own fault. I had no sympathy for her harsh attitude and her ability to blame everyone else.My issues with this book were not really writing issues. The author is a talented storyteller and creates vivid images with her well placed words. This book just didn’t work because of character and personality conflicts with my own, I believe. Having the two focal points of the story not only not connect with me as a reader, but they hit on a few things I didn’t expect to be bothered by so much. It made me feel uneasy that I was unable to relate to the female characters concern about not being able to have children and I felt uneasy that someone a character had unselfishly sacrificed so much for, would be so cold and indifferent towards one another.I rate Wicked Ever After 2.5 out of 5 Bullets.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Farewell to a Series Done Well- Dark, Gritty, Passionate Paranormal Steampunk Romance at Its Best! By Sophia Rose I had no expectations that the author would return to Criminy and Tish's story and the Criminy's circus where this whole delightful series got started. Bravo, Ms. Dawson! I didn't realize how badly I wanted it until it was suddenly a possibility so I snatched it up and devoured it like the sweetest, most sinful morsel.The story is indeed a follow-up book focused on Crim and Tish, but it also was a reunion story that brought together everyone from all the previous books and novellas. It felt like coming home when I returned to the world of Sang and I absolutely recommend getting these in order.The story opens with Tish facing down a decision that she does not want to make. The witch's curse has literally sucked the life out of her and continues to do so, but she won't let Criminy take the last of her humanity and Blud her. She says it is because of her dear gran back in the earth world, but deep down it is fear of the final, irrevocable change. She is abrupt and stormy, but Criminy is there beside her even when she leaps at the new idea of bringing her gran across and letting Criminy blud her to save her from dying. Criminy is reluctant, but does it for Tish.Tish soon finds that her young, youthful gran who insists on being called Ruby is nothing like she expected. Ruby is flamboyant and daring and dismissive of Tish. Then she is gone from the circus. Criminy advises Tish to let Ruby go, but she can't. So off they go on a dangerous adventure to find Ruby who has gone in search of a powerful dark witch. In the end, Tish is forced to face her fears and not just a few facts and may lose that which is most important to her.Alright, being reunited with Criminy, Tish, and the rest of the gang in Sang was an absolute treat beyond measure. The worldbuilding was just as colorful, unsettling, dangerous, and exciting as ever. The tone was so well-done the way I had no trouble feeling like I was visiting a bizarre new place.There was lots of familiar settings and characters, but I loved that the adventure took me into a new situation of 'what happens after happily ever after' for people like Criminy and Tish. Tish is stubborn and impulsive and Criminy is devilishly attractive in that foreign macabre way of his. The story cements them as a couple through thick and thin. I loved that they got so much page time together. And the adventure was not easy nor was it loss, but it kept my attention riveted to the very end. I probably should have detested Ruby, but I found her a most interesting character that made a scene absolutely crackle with tension. I had no trouble seeing the situation in a way that the heroine, Tish could not and didn't until near the end with Criminy's help.The adventure was dark and gritty like it can get in the Blud series. The author isn't afraid to let the monsters in this world whether they are good or bad or a bit of both out. The blend of fantasy, paranormal, and steampunk is done well. By this story, most of it goes unexplained and is just assumed which was fun in its familiar feel.The romance is an ongoing relationship, but it never felt staid or settled. Criminy is as larger than life, passionate, and dangerous as ever and has no trouble getting Tish out of her head and off her worries. He worries for her in this story and it was sweet to see him expose that vulnerability to Tish. It was a nice blend of scorching passion and tender romance.All in all, this last book of the Blud series was all that a last book should be. Do I still want more visits to Sang? You bet! But if I have to say good-bye then this farewell was done well. I would recommend this series to those who enjoy a bit of macabre, some grit, and some passion in a blending of paranormal and steampunk in a fantasy world.My thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Forced to constantly travel between the land of Sang and Earth as she watches her beloved Nana slowly and painfully fight her last battle to stay alive. Tish was cruelly tricked by a witch and now her own body is ageing at an accelerated rate but her amazing husband Crim still waits to make her like him. When a chance conversation with Nana presents Tish with an idea it sets off a chain of events with the most bizarre consequences ! No longer is Crim confident that he can protect Tish and together they will truly discover whether or not blood really is thicker than water!Ok my hands are up as I confess I've only read the first book in this series but when I spotted this I just couldn't resist. Nana is dying and we begin to understand just how the ravages of time affect the human body and being trapped in your own skin is not always pleasant. What's worse though is discovering how different a person can be when suddenly faced with a whole new world of experiences and possibilities! Nana gives Tish the shock of her life and I'm afraid it's heartbreaking. As for Crim well his confidence and abilities are sorely tested and this Bludman is not a superman but surprisingly human. Well played Ms Dawson, I really enjoyed seeing both sides of the coin and even if I didn't like certain aspects as personalities seem to do a complete turn I could fully understand the reasons. An adventure like no other but lots of characters appear which was a tad confusing but for those who have followed this series a blissful epilogue with possibilities of a future spinoff. This is a passionate love story admittedly but will appeal I think to those like myself who enjoy steampunk or urban fantasy. So sad to leave the world of Sang but it's been a rip roaring blast! I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review

Con una narrativa llena de metáforas hermosas, lenguaje fluido y a la vez exquisito, esta escritora nos cuenta la historia de Sofía y Jack. Toda la historia se concentra en ellos, no hay villanos, no hay pasados traumáticos solo dos personas que vienen de mundos diferentes, con personalidades diferentes y necesidades de vida diferentes. Así que desde que comienza el lector se pregunta, ¿lo lograran? La novela no pierde el ritmo y nos sorprende con el giro de la trama. La escritora nos hace compartir los sentimientos de los protagonistas así que me encontré ansiosa, triste por lo que ocurre y enamora de Jack. Le recomiendo que la lea, que la disfrute para que sepa si el amor triunfa o no. No la considero una novela erotica pero si con buenos momentos.Esta es la primera vez que leo de Maria Tiznado y realmente es excelente, le auguro mucho éxito.

Jay Baruch obtained his medical degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook before working as an emergency physician. Currently, Baruch is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Brown University s Alpert Medical School. He is also the Director of the Program in Clinical Arts and Humanities and the Co­-Director of the Medical Humanities and Bioethics Scholarly Concentration Program. Baruch is the author of Fourteen Stories: Doctors, Patients, and Other Strangers (The Kent State University Press, 2007).

By Perry Dinardo True to the title, the stories in What’s Left Out are about the interstitial spaces of healthcare. While a few of the stories take place inside the hospital, the majority are about the emotional toll of dealing with illness and death in everyday life, after leaving the hospital. Dr. Baruch understands that in the wake of such stress, something as simple as finding one’s way out of a hospital parking garage can become a harrowing journey. In the space of a few pages, Baruch is able to create a new universe filled with incredible depth of feeling.In his prologue, Baruch writes that the placing of his stories within “unfamiliar and unsettling moral universes” is purposeful. Dr. Baruch is an experienced emergency medicine physician, and while these stories are fictional and do not directly reflect his own experience with patients, his stories have an undeniable ring of truth.His characters make difficult and painful choices, such as the story of the patient in the Emergency Department who is determined to return to her abusive boyfriend’s home to retrieve her beloved dog. A darkly humorous story about a town’s residents protesting against murderous telephone poles seems bizarre until you consider our society’s eagerness to blame others for our own mistakes. A fiercely independent elderly woman who continues to push the boundaries of her physical limitations is heartbreaking only because many people in real life are never granted the environmental adaptations that her caregivers eventually provide. From literal lab rats who fight and die for love and fame, to a haunted alcoholic judge, to a disgraced homeless researcher, the characters Baruch sketches are haunting and memorable, and more complex than ought to be possible within such a short frame.The stories in What’s Left Out are often heartbreaking and strange, with layers of detail that make each one well worth a second read. He wanted to be with Rada but she chose Gary. D is sick of Rada's detailing and just completely sick of Alex, and hopes for better. Rada is in the bank when it's robbed, can't get the old man to lay on the floor and her following suspension leaves her aloof in the world. And then there are the demoted police who want to give something unlawful a try. The Worm Hole Fleshing out the shadowy metaphysical hints of Beckett's novels, this intellectual romp is the best debut I have read in years. -- Nicholas Lezard The Guardian But, this being a book set in 21st-century Britain, it is not only concerned with the fate of the soul and the nature of narrative, but also with guns, the ennui of daily life, minutely observed trivia and deep and dark matters; Quentin Tarantino is in the mix, as well as eschatology, the branch of theology concerned with the end of days. If you liked Tom McCarthy's Remainder, you'll love this. Guy Ware is also very good at black humour ("I've either got to actually hit someone or find some other way to calm myself down," says the most violent and yobbish of the narrators, "because if I go on like this, I'm going to make myself ill"), and corny humour: on being told that the first stage of grief, in Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's formula, is denial, a character replies "No, it's not," which got a laugh from me at least. The result of all this is the best debut novel I have read in years. About the Author Guy Ware's stories have appeared online, in magazines and in numerous anthologies. His collection, You Have 24 Hours to Love Us (Comma, 2012), was longlisted for both the Frank O'Connor International Award and the Edge Hill Short Story prizes. 'Hostage' was subsequently included in the Best British Short Stories 2013 (Salt). The Fat of Fed Beasts is the first novel he hasn't put in a drawer and left there.

Getting What's Really Going On By George Kelly Lighting The World, Merle Drown's latest novel is in keeping with a central theme that appears in all of his work--the lives of "the other half," the downtrodden, the exploited, and their desperate struggle to simply survive. Wade Rule's world is as harsh as a New Hampshire Winter. His home is barren of love, the school that his parents moved him to is large, impersonal, and sharply divided between the privileged, and the poor. The city he lives in is restricting him from the only life he has known. When he lived in Newfound, a miniscule town dwarfed by the still untamed wilderness around it, he could survive, and he could cope. Wade is a hunter; intelligent, resourceful, and adept in his own environment, In the city though he is dying, as slow a death as any animal he may have caught in a trap back home. Drown's sensitive portrait of Wade, and our sympathy for him, is heightened as we listen to his thoughts, and watch him fall in love with a kindred spirit--a young girl named Maria--someone who has her own set of horrors to deal with. Both bond and in their desire to hatch a "way out" of the misery, we follow along and want them to succeed. After he has us rooting for these two truly beautiful kids, Drown accelerates well beyond the speed limit, coupling stark image upon image until circumstances begin to compound and tumble over each other to an inevitability that he has laid groundwork for from the beginning.It's easy to draw conclusions about sensational news that presents only hard and naked facts. It's another matter entirely, to make sense out of something that doesn't seem to make any sense at all. Lighting The World gives us an inside look at the logic behind something illogical. It's a compelling piece of writing--a piece of fiction drawn from fact, that slices deep into the flesh to expose the underside of "the other half."

Riveting "Northern Gothic" By John V Merle Drown's tragic triumph Lighting The World is a fictionalized account of a real-life school shooting in Concord, New Hampshire. Through a close third-person narrative, Drown inserts readers in the tortured and complicated mind of Wade Rule.Drown's prose and characterizations embody the best elements of Southern Gothic with a Northern sensibility. Rule's obsession with Maria recalls Faulkner's Benjy and Caddy in The Sound and the Fury, while the peripheral characters, as viewed through Wade's eyes, harken to the grotesques of Flannery O'Connor.Merle Drown provides unique insight into a small-town tragedy. His storytelling never asks the reader to sympathize with or forgive Wade, although at times they may feel compelled to do so. There is something universal in Wade's struggles that everyone can identify with in some sense or another. Lighting The World is a compelling novel that you will be unable to put down. Or forget.

I’ve known too many boys like his protaginist Wade Rule, angry sad boys who believed they only had one chance to matter … and had to make that chance work in spite of all consequences.“Lighting the World” is Drown’s attempt to shed light on a real-life tragedy, a school shooting in Concord, N.H. a month before that same school lost a favorite teacher in the space-shuttle Challenger disaster. Lost in the crowd well before he died, the real boy behind Wade Rule was buried even further in the school’s collective mind as it grieved the hero teacher.Drown’s powerful, almost tactile prose successfully exhumes him, putting a face on the boy that, while fictional, fits. Wade breathes and bleeds and aches with love felt and wanted. More than anything else, though, Wade wants to be needed, to matter.Wade’s prized possession is the shotgun he used to take his first deer, an action that Wade believes opened the door to manhood, When he finds himself barred from stepping through that door -- by school, by his parents -- he turns to the gun again, and when your only tool is a gun, every problem starts to look like something to shoot.Wade is a lost boy, representative I think, of the many lost children out there. The ones who join gangs, or ISIS, or father illegitimate children, or join the military (likely the healthiest of these options), thinking it’s the only way they will ever count. Unlike those nameless millions, though, Wade Rule -- thanks to author Drown -- has a face we can see. Read this book then pass it to your sons.

A superb book (and guide) on SEO for any business By Oleg This book is a standout for 2 simple reasons: it's full of extremely potent information and it's small enough not to overwhelm anyone reading it and trying to implement the wisdom within.The book is thoughtfully broken down into 20 steps, each dealing with a particular topic in the wondrous world of Google's Semantic Search and its impact on SEO. Each of the 20 steps contains 10 action steps, where the author guides the user with specific actions, thoughts and strategies. Thus, even though any business can read the book and benefit from it - the action steps allow for easy consumption (there are only 10 in each step), yet would be customized for each business trying to implement them.It's an absolutely brilliant strategy on the part of the author of walking the reader through every step of the way, almost hand holding the user to ensure maximum success and proper implementation. Between the information in each chapter and the reader working on the steps - this book becomes an SEO bible, with built-in ability to help any size business, in any industry, in any country, to take control of their web presence and SEO to maximize that presence and be able to grow their business as an eventual results of incorporating every step and every action.To help with tracking the details of action steps - the author also provides access to an online companion tool, making it easy to track the progress and use the tool to generate an SEO Blueprint for the business. "Nothing to Write Home About" is a lightly fictionalized memoir of a now distant period of recent American History, "The Cold War." In mid-1950s America, a rite of male passage was a couple of years of non-threatening, peacetime military service. By 1955, the war in Korea was two years past and Vietnam was still just a name. For the author, then aged eighteen, the Army offered an escape from the confines of a blue-collar neighborhood, a first opening on and into a larger world, a semi-grownup world filled with characters from all over the country, some good, some not so good and some just outlandish. Two years in the Army, with duty in South Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado and finally Germany became, unknowingly at the time, one of the genuinely educational and more memorable experiences of a lifetime.

Captivating coming-of-age tale By Rosemarie Keough I looked through this book, at every picture and then I read the narrative from beginning to end and was captivated. I often judge a book on whether it teaches me something, opens a window to another world, uplifts me in some way and if too, it pulls at my heart strings. The story told through the words of young Abel spurred me on. More than once this coming-of-age tale brought tears to my eyes. An excellent read for people of all ages. - Pat and Rosemarie

About the Author Davina H. Sanders was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to David L. and Jeanne H. (Porter) Sanders. She is the oldest of seven children, fondly referred to as the Magnificent Seven. She moved with her family to Los Angeles, California, in 1959 and then married and had two children-daughter, the late Tyshara, and son, Joseph. She earned her associate degrees in accounting, commercial food service, and paralegal technology and her bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Martin University, Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha since 1993. She was widowed in 1997 and retired to the Atlanta, Georgia, Metroplex in 2008.
