Josh seemed to have the perfect childhood: a loving family and an apartmentlike bedroom setting for him and his sister. There was always something to do, someone to see, or a neighborhood pickup football game. Then one year everything changed just before Christmas. "Rob, come meet Mr. Rich and his son, Josh." These words changed his life forever.

By SavageATL This is a really sweet coming of age story about a boy learning to embrace himself and others. It's charming without being saccharine and the other characters are interesting and very natural. The parents, siblings, and other characters are very real; the dialogue is very real, and there are a lot of hidden gems of wit on each page. People who liked Cold Sassy Tree will like this book as well. The descriptions are vivid and realistic and take you back to Atlanta in the late 60's. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait for his next book!

Two boys who's fathers work together develop an intense friendship that eventually leads to something much more. The bonds they form with family and friends as they help each other navigate the speed bumps of life tug at the heart strings. I was particularly drawn into the story because of the similarities of the characters to my own childhood memories. It was a simpler time when parents weren't overly paranoid about their kids' safety and could turn them out to play in the creek with the neighborhood kids and develop friendships that would last an entire lifetime. No serious drama, over the top action, or fantasy, just good lighthearted reading, perfect for the poolside or beach. I felt as though I were reading about real people dealing with real issues in a realistic way. In this time when there is so much hate all around us, it is refreshing to read a story where love conquers all. I highly recommend it.

I was the same age as the main characters in the book at the time it was set. Even though my childhood was nothing like those in the novel, I felt like I knew them. This book was a delightful, nostalgic (for me) look back at what it was like to be a teen-aged boy in the 1960s. Even though I was nothing like the main characters, I was able relive those years through these boys & their friends. I felt their joys, their fears, their sorrows, their insecurities, and their roller-coaster journey through adolescence. This is a perfect summer read for those of us who love to revisit the 1960s.
