Prejudice, discrimination, racism are all ills we face in the world since time immemorial, based in perceptions of biological and social differences between peoples and places. This book aims to take on a subject matter that we all struggle with, a subject matter normally intended for teens and adults. Breaking it down so even the smallest amongst us, the children, can and will understand. It is the simple concept of growing up the future generation, shaping them for a better tomorrow. If we want them to be oranges, mangoes, etc., then we plant (instill) in them the properties to grow as such. If we want them to follow the straight and narrow or go the way of the crooked path, then we shape them accordingly. As adults, we may not be beyond redemption, but we are set in our ways, bearing the fruits of our trees, too stiff to bend or we will break. Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not depart from it. A big change is needed, and a big change is hard to accomplish, but we can start by reading this book.

About the Author

Born in April of 1969 in Kingston, Jamaica, Horace S. Mallette has been writing songs and poems since primary school for his friends and for personal use. A few of his poems have been published in the local newspaper the Sunday Gleaner under the moniker Kevin Garfield Brown (KGB), an alias he created while going to high school because of a fascination with world politics at the time. It is an interest he still holds.

Horace, who has two teenage daughters, is trained in accounting and spent most of his work life in the local shipping industry. He enjoys spending time with his kids, gardening, and writing. As an author, he appreciates all genres of literature, and in this, his debut children's book, he is writing in one of his favorites.

A relevant message which will be a good read for young kids By Book Reviewer I really liked the message behind this children's story, and its a great one to share with your children, to help them understand that what appears on the outside (physically) is no different on the inside. The story takes you through a world where three committees of colours and shapes exits, but they are segregated.. it is done poetically which will make it a lovely read for children.I would highly recommend this as a read for young children .. some of the words are a little big at times, but parents can surely explain :)A lovely little read and the illustrations make it appealing.

By SFF Dragon The fourth instalment of 'Tempted by the Bear' by V. Vaughn is another pretty short read and I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review. This serial is well written in the first person, with alternating points of view, but I'm starting to get really frustrated with it. I don't usually read serials (or watch them either), first person narrative or cliff-hangers, but I do like V Vaughn's stand alone paranormal romance books so I'm giving it a go, but it's time everything came to a head and all the truths are brought out into the open. As the saying goes, 'it'll all come out in the wash'. This is a serial, not a series, and each part needs to be read in order.Trying not to give spoilers here, but it's hard not to. I'm starting to really dislike Tristan and Isabelle for their heartless use of their mates to get control of the bear clans and use threats to create an empire they'll rule together. Time they gave it up and told the truth. I'm also pretty sure the damage that will be done to the wonderful and kind hearted Annie when the truth finally comes out will never be undone, trust will be destroyed and true mates or not, Tristan's behaviour is unforgivable and the longer the situation continues, the more unforgivable it becomes. Luke I'm not so sure about, he's a user too and will probably deserve what he gets. Isabelle too. I have no sympathy for underhanded, back-stabbing users. Now Helga's condition is known, Annie takes steps to protect the children and I'm pretty sure she'll have to deal with the evil Helga soon. Tori and Keith go on their first date, after which both Keith and Lucy are afraid for her so take steps to give her protection. Lucy finds her true mate. I can't wait for the next part, which I hope will have a definite conclusion.

There are so many twisted tales going on in this book.First, the Annie and Tristan. Annie is taking to motherhood fantastically. All she cares about is the happiness and health of her stepdaughters. Tristan, on the other hand, is trouble. I don't like him because he's a liar. He's going to hurt Annie, and she deserves nothing but happiness. Then you have Helga, Annie's mother-in-law. Haven't seen the evil side of her yet, but I know it's coming.Keith and Tori have finally seen the light and started dating! It's about time with those two. But then, well, never a dull moment.Lucy and Sven. Sven makes me laugh with his wildness. It's even funnier with Lucy trying to tame him. I'm glad the found each other. Hope he's not a liar like Tristan and Izzy.Speaking of Izzy, I don't know what she's up to, but I know it's nothing good. I don't like her either, lol. And Luke is up to something as well. He's in on whatever evil plans Tristan and Izzy have going on. None of them can be trusted! It drives me crazy that nobody can see through their lies and schemes.Obviously, I have very strong feeling about these characters and their stories. The story is very intense. It sucks you in and doesn't let go. I can't wait to get my hands on Part 5.***I received a complimentary copy in return for an honest review***

VaughnReviewed by: Stephanie Jordan■■■▪▪▪▪■■■▪▪▪▪■■■▪▪▪▪■■■▪▪▪▪■■■This series absolutely amazing, all the twists and turns sometimes you don't know if I'm coming or going. Everytime I read I get hooked on a characters. Daydreaming about what I,  (Annie) would do to my soon to be mother-in-law whoops I got that wrong she is Monster-in-Law. Annie won't let this women hurt the triplets anymore than she already has. They need love, why does Tristan let her take care of the girls? Annie finds out what wrong with Tristan and Isabelle's mother, now she can understand a little better what's happening. Ooooooooo Brady and Carly have a secret.. Plus there seems to be more and more characters coming in and a lots of true matings. This sure is mixing the packs together. But Isabelle is still making plans to take over the two clan's and making them a new kingdom. But the question remains the same is Tristan still in on it with Isabelle? 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Awful! By Love the Bling! This is the worst book I have ever read. I would really like to give it no stars. It is completely filled with about a hundreds of nauseating emails that this author exchanged with a Nigerian man who was scamming her out of over a hundred thousand dollars. I had a hard time believing that this story was even true! The author claims she is a civil rights lawyer, but I find it I can't begin to understand how she repeatedly forked over money to a man she had never met. Oh well, guess I forked over $3.99 to an author I had never heard of. Don't do it!

Must read By Sameera Ali While a work in progress, this book is an excellent example of how today's technology centric society is breeding a new set of criminals. In this day and age, online dating is no longer taboo, but is encouraged, especially for the working professional who aims to establish their career first and foremost before love, marriage and family. The author, Ms. Baker, is unmatched in her bravery, to allow the reader(s) into her most personal thoughts and insights, ultimately divulging initimate communications with her ongoing nightmare. The essential foundation to Ms. Baker's story is the simple warning that we all are potential victims in the making. Reading her memoir made me realize that even as I write this review, the irony is not lost me, that I have a digitial dependence.Ms. Baker subtly points out that the advent of social media, in an already unreliable internet, has created a new type of isolation in which, (i) our self-esteem is in a constant state of disarray, where we are scrutinizing the minutiae of our peers while simutaneously leaving our own live out for criticis and (ii) in which we have managed to fool ourselves into believing online communcation, reading/writing posts, uploading/commenting on pictures is the same thing as in-person interaction.Ms. Baker uses this memoir to advises us that no matter how educated, well-read or widely travelled we are, at the heart of it, it is not atypical to be lonely and vulnerable. Furthermore, there are people, men and women, who are well versed in manipulation, charm and seduction to take advantage of any of is. It's a long con that can untimately be detrimental to anyone's mind, body and soul. I believe this book's deep insight into the psyche of a woman's scammed is a far more valuable tool in preventing furture scams from creating new hapless victims. A must read.

This book is handy guide to help you get all those little practical things right. Hacks like how to wash your clothes, purifying water, and learning how to make knots are important, something you probably already learned at boy scouts but forgot a long time ago (I know I did). Good book.

A softcover edition featuring a decade of the popular all-ages, library-perennial graphic novel series―starring a rabbit ronin―in one slipcased set.

Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo is a popular all-ages graphic novel series that chronicles the action-packed wanderings of a ronin in feudal Japan ― as told with anthropomorphic animals. For the first ten years of his career, the battling bunny was published by Fantagraphics Books. This slipcase set collects that entire run (previously published as seven trade paperbacks). With over 1000 pages of story, this is the complete, definitive, early Usagi in a paperback edition, with plenty of extras for fans and collectors. Black & white with 24 pages of color

Usagi Yojimbo: The Special Edition (Usagi Yojimbo), by Stan Sakai

Review “Usagi Yojimbo is one of the most acclaimed comics of the last 30 years. It deserves as wide an audience as possible. This is a sturdy set, well constructed and respectfully designed. It’s hard to imagine any comics reader who doesn’t already have these stories would regret having this on their shelf.” (Tim O'Neil - The A.V. Club)“I don’t think I’m exaggerating at all when I say that Stan Sakai is arguably the greatest living comic book creator in the world, and Usagi Yojimbo is a thirty-year masterpiece that has a consistency and craftsmanship that other comics only touch when they’re at their peak.” (Chris Sims - ComicsAlliance)

About the Author Stan Sakai is a third-generation Japanese American and multiple Eisner-Award-winning cartoonist, creator of the popular and long-running Usagi Yojimbo comic book. (Usagi Yojimbo is a recurring "guest star" in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle universe.) Born in Japan, he grew up in Hawaii and lives in Pasadena, CA.Stan Lee is the co-creator of many of the Marvel Comics iconic heroes, including Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, Daredevil, Thor, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, and the X-Men. His movie and television work includes cameo roles in most of the Marvel Comics movies, co-creating and hosting the TV reality show Who Wants to Be a Superhero?, and voice work on many of the Marvel animated series, including Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, and Super Hero Squad Show.

39 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Review of the Extras By Ratty The stories contained in this set get five stars easily. Stan Sakai's Ronin Rabbit has been thrilling readers for over 25 years now with masterful storytelling and terrific artwork. And these early adventures will delight fans of fiction set in feudal Japan, anthropomorphic animals, or just the art of comics in general. With this in mind I have decided to limit the review below to the physical package of the book and its extras only.----Let me start by saying this is an extremely handsome set. The slipcase features beautiful examples of Sakai's artwork, the cover to the magazine "Anything Goes" #6 on the right side and the cover of "The Dragon Below Conspiracy"/UY vol #4 (both covers are also reprinted within) on the left respectively. The slipcase is thick and sturdy as are the covers for both of the volumes it contains. The binding on the set is glued rather than sewn (I suppose that would have raised the price past the hundred mark?) I can't imagine this being a problem for a copy that is reasonably taken care of though. Anyone familiar with their "Complete Peanuts" reprint series knows that Fantagraphics does not skimp on the materials in their prestige/special edition books and this set is no exception. All of the pages are glossy and the print is clear though the pages do run to the thin side (to keep the package compact I suppose) so sometimes you will see lines from the next page. I find this to be a bit distracting and it's probably the biggest flaw in the set. It's almost a little jarring to go from seeing these comics in their original newsprint to being this clearly and slickly reproduced. But it is without doubt a welcome sight, and Sakai's work certainly deserves it.The covers of the two books are almost identical, white with a beautiful painting of Usagi riding a dragon from the cover of Comics Journal #192, also reprinted within. The only variation between the book covers being whether one or two small gray clan crests are below Usagi and the dragon, to denote which volume is which without having to look at the spine, a nice touch. The back of the slipcase extols the virtues of this set with a list of features that is sure to be almost identical to the one(s) you'll see on Amazon or other sites so let's just do a rundown of the features touted there:***"The first seven volumes of the collected Usagi Yojimbo, totaling almost 1,000 pages of classic comics, presented in their original size and format!"***As I already mentioned, this set is quite handsome. And it will take up surprisingly little shelf space without being flimsy or feeling cramped.***"`The Origins of Usagi': the earliest character sketches and never-used story pages!"***There are 8 pages of early sketches from Sakai, one of these sketches was recently reproduced in the excellent "The Art of Usagi Yojimbo" from Dark Horse, but most should be new. There is also a reprinting of an early version of the story "Samurai" that was previously printed in the above mentioned Dark Horse collection.***"An extensive full-color Usagi cover gallery!"***This was the only one that was a bit disappointing for me really. There are indeed 22 nice, full color pages reprinting Usagi covers from Albedo Anthropomorphics, Critters, Usagi's own first series and the collected Fantagraphics volumes, plus a few magazine covers for good measure. While the reproduction is crisp, I was a little disappointed to find that the vast majority of these covers are shoved into a tiny 4-to-a-page format, with seemingly random covers selected to be shown at full page while (to me) much more interesting and beautiful ones were squashed down and crammed together to make us squint.***"Two hilarious Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles + Usagi crossovers by Sakai!"***These are"Turtle Soup & Rabbit Stew" 6pgs and "The Treaty" 10pgsBoth written and illustrated by Sakai, both good fun. I can't remember just now but I believe there might have been more crossover material in the comics from this Fantagraphics period, but even if so I'm sure the license just to get these two was a nightmare. A nice, hard to find bonus.***"An in-depth, feature-length interview with Stan Sakai from 1995!"***Well, at least the box and the book itself are upfront about the age of the interview*. It's the same one that I've seen on amazon and elsewhere touted as "a career spanning interview!" without mentioning the little fact that it's over a decade old. Well it's still a nice, interesting treat for fans. Especially those curious about Sakai himself as well as his creation. It's from "The Comics Journal" (#192 I'll wager) and the original interviewer, who also edited this set, has added notes to bring some points from it up-to-date. It's 13 pages with illustrations to aid the points discussed.***"Stan Sakai shows you 'How I draw Usagi Yojimbo!'"***This has to be the most-often reprinted Usagi extra, or close to it. A cute 12 page comic in which Stan guides you through his process of inspiration, creation and publication in writing Usagi. I already have it 2 or 3 times over and if you've got "The Art of Usagi Yojimbo" you've got it to. By no means a bad little extra, but not really exclusive or rare enough to warrant so much attention.***"Introductions by Stan Lee and Stan Sakai!"***These are the only introductions you will find in this set. The thoughtful introductions by various artists found in the regular edition volumes are entirely absent. Perhaps one of the few advantages the regular edition carries over this slipcase. Both of the introductions which are provided here are very nice though.-------------Final Thoughts:This is an excellent set for the money you pay on amazon at the time of this writing, less than buying the regular editions separately! (EDIT: Since the time I wrote this review the book has gone out of print and rocketed in value, so it is no longer the case that this set is cheaper than the regular edition volumes separately.)And definitely the version to get for someone just discovering the series. But if you already have the volumes and aren't sure whether it would be worth it to "upgrade" to this set I will say in my opinion this upgrade shouldn't be considered "essential". The set is beautiful, the extras are nice and it seems built to weather decades. But unless the smaller format of the regular reprints really bugs you you won't be missing too terribly much by sticking with your older set.*Actually the book lists the interview as having taken place in 1996, the slipcase is in the wrong here. Not a big deal though.

Split into two thick oversized hardcovers, the first seven volumes of the Usagi Yojimbo story are collected here in a sturdy, gorgeous full-color slipcase. The complete Fantagraphics series (volume 1) of Usagi, including the TMNT crossovers, is included as well as Usagi's appearances in Albedo Anthropomorphics and Critters. Special, exclusive content includes introductions by Stan Sakai and Stan Lee, an interview with Stan Sakai, and a wonderful cover gallery.Hardcore Usagi fans will have read these stories over and over. I welcomed the chance to relive them in this format, instead of pulling out my singles or TPBs. The art is as fresh as ever, printed perfectly on glossy paper and clear as can be. I will not spend time reviewing the story content, as this is a set designed specifically for fans and collectors, of which there are many.I have read that Fantagraphics only plans on this first print run. If that is the case, and given the ferocity with which some Usagi fans collect the hardcover collections, I would expect this set to become scarce in the future. Get it while you can! If you had any worries about its quality, rest assured, it is worth every penny and manufactured to the highest standards.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A rocky start, but the road leads to a paved ride. By romevi When I first began my experience with Usagi it was with the Turtles, as I'm sure it was for many Turtle fans growing up in the `80s and `90s. The rabbit bodyguard appeared suddenly in a Turtles cartoon, and left just the same. Many years later I recalled that rabbit after spotting him on a cover of an issue at a local comic shop, and decided to read from the beginning. My first review noted my letdown, but I was prompted with follow-ups that I should continue reading. That, indeed, the beginning was very choppy; Sakai was getting his grounding, and dipping lightly into the pools of his creativity. Many of the first stories are silly and disparate in overall plot. This box set collects all of the issues pre-Dark Horse, so everything from Mirage and Fantagraphics.Nevertheless, it begins his more serious journeys, whereas the Dark Horse era really sets Usagi in its own level of respect. The box set is beautiful and worth every penny. The covers show the cover for the trade paperback of The Dragon Bellow Conspiracy (I'm working off my memory here, so forgive me if I mistitle the name), as well as one of the earlier comics. You get two hardcover books in the slipcase, and each volume is numbered one and two by spheres. It's slightly larger than the trade paperbacks, which is great. These scans lose no distortion.A remarkable set and the definitive version to own and read the comics before Sakai's transition to Dark Horse Comics.

Greenville, by Dale Peck

Review Praise for Greenville (previously titled What We Lost)   “What We Lost left me wonderfully perplexed: how could so much emotion be crammed into so few pages? How could something so accessible seem so utterly personalized? How could such a traditional form of storytelling evoke such a new set of feelings? I could think of only one place to go for my answers: back to the first page. So that’s where I went. And I bet that’s where you’ll go after reading this terrific book.” —Jonathan Safran Foer“Dale Peck may have an ego the size of Montana. He may have annoyed half the known literary world with his screeds on other writers. But he may also be one our most adventurous and singularly talented writers working today.”—San Francisco Chronicle “The quality of his fiction is a pleasurable shock if all one’s read is his criticism . . . Peck’s fiction writing is visceral, risky yet controlled, lyrical and—especially in [Greenville]—enormously compassionate.” —Salon “What We Lost is as slender, fiercely focused and humane as Franzen’s epically bloated The Corrections was sloppy and self-involved . . . Eloquent and elegiac.” —Philadelphia Gay News   “Every reader knows that time when you simply must close a book in gratitude and breathe in some of the silence it has created. What We Lost is that sort of book over and over again. This is a meditation on the permanence of glancing moments; an examination of how we tell our stories; a portrait of love and failure; and a hard, fascinating look at the consequences of the bits and pieces of our lives. With ease Peck stretches the boundaries of memoir into the realm of the imagination, and in the end contends that it doesn’t matter how we tell our stories—what matters is that we have them to tell. This is a book of grace and dignity that will be around for a long, long time.” —Colum McCann“Peck’s style has something of the grave concision of Raymond Carver and Richard Ford, a likeness rendered more emphatic by the atmosphere—masculine, hardscrabble, faintly ominous. It also puts one in mind of memoirs such as Mary Karr’s The Liars’ Club and Mikal Gilmore’s Shot in the Heart, tough but lyrical reports from the heart of American darkness and dysfunction . . . Much as I would like to give the slayer of literary reputations a taste of his own poisonous medicine, this finely wrought memoir makes it, in all conscience, impossible.” —The Daily Telegraph “This is the same stony, physical, unforgiving world that one meets in John Steinbeck, Cormac McCarthy or Annie Proulx, evoked in a similar sinewy, masculine prose. Peck is certainly one dickens of a writer—and maybe, annoyingly, he really is one of the best writers around. [Greenville] gives us an infinitely precious sense of a more austere, and much, much tougher America.” —The Sunday Times   “It’s just as well that Dale Peck writes better than those he despises. The principal narrative is harrowingly heart-wrenching. I’ve read nothing better in long years.” —The Times   “A gripping piece of writing.” —Daily Mail “With great tenderness and courage, the son brings the father to life before our eyes. The older man’s boyhood, rich in possibility, is reconstructed in stunning detail. And it’s as if, by setting this down, Dale Peck Jr., in some way, saves Dale Peck Sr. It would be hard to find a more clear-eyed or generous writer.” —Chloe Hooper, author of Tall Man “Peck’s account of his father’s horrific upbringing stuns the readers with its juxtaposition of hope, sadness, and loss . . . The author, whose novels have been highly praised for their unforgettable prose, again enriches the reader with luminous language, shining like a pearl in the midst of his father’s wrenching tale.” —Booklist“Accomplished novelist Peck’s account of his father’s horrific 1950s Long Island childhood is reminiscent of Angela’s Ashes both in scope and tone. This stateside reincarnation of a world dominated by an abusive alcoholic father may not leave readers laughing, but it certainly provides a similar lens on a boy’s resilience and optimism . . . and Peck subtly demonstrates how this determined boy will not just endure life, but embrace it.” —Publishers Weekly

About the Author Dale Peck is the author of twelve books in a variety of genres, including Martin and John, The Law of Enclosures, and Sprout. His fiction and criticism have appeared in dozens of publications, and have earned him two O. Henry Awards, a Pushcart Prize, a Lambda Literary Award, and John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. He lives in New York City, where he has taught in The New School’s Graduate Writing Program since 1999.

We don’t want to get your mother up.        The old man’s clothes stink of institutional food but it is his breath, wet and sickly sweet, that leaves a weight on the boy’s cheek like his sisters’ hairspray when they shoo him from the bathroom. Reluctantly he edges out of bed. Like the old man, he wears his work clothes, jeans, undershirt, brown corduroy jacket—everything but shoes. He shivers in his socks and watches in the half light as the pillowcase is stripped from his pillow and filled with clothes from the dresser, trying to warm his thin chest with thin arms and the thinner sleeves of his jacket.       That’s Jimmy’s shirt.       The old man claps him in the stomach with a pair of boots.       You shut up and put these on.       The boots are cold and damp and pinch the boy’s feet as he squeezes into them, and as he knots the laces he watches Lance’s drawers and Jimmy’s football jersey disappear into the pillowcase.       But Dad.       Sshh!       The old man stuffs a pair of jeans into the sack.       But Dad. Those are Duke’s.       The old man looks at the shock of blond hair on the far side of the bed, and when he turns to the boy the empty bottles in his pockets rattle and the boy can smell what was in them too.       You won’t have to worry about that bastard no more, the old man says, breath lighting up the air like sparked acetylene. Not where you’re going.       If any of the boys has awakened he gives no sign. Already Lance is hugging the extra inches of blanket where the boy had lain, and Jimmy, slotted into the crease between the pushedtogether mattresses, seems folded along his spine like a blade of grass. At the far end of the bed Duke lies with his back to his dark-haired brothers, the stiff collar of his houndstooth coat sticking out beyond the blanket. A few inches beyond Duke’s nose the rope-hung sheet dividing the boys’ bed from their sisters’ puckers in a draft, but Duke never goes to sleep without making sure the holes on the girls’ half of the curtain are covered by solid patches on the boys’, and so the boy can catch no glimpse of Lois or Edi or Joanie as he is surfed out of the room by the old man’s frozen spittle. All he glimpses in the gap between curtain and floor is a banana peel and two apple cores, and his stomach rumbles and he wants to check his jacket to see if his siblings have left him any food. But the old man is nudging him, Faster, faster, and the boy has to use both hands to descend the ladder’s steep rungs. Down below, the quilts fencing off his parents’ bed are drawn tight as tent flaps, and although his mother’s snores vibrate through tattered layers of cotton batting both she and the baby, Gregory, tucked in his crib beside her, remain invisible.      The boy pauses at the stovepipe and its single coal of heat in the hopes of warming his stiff boots, but the old man steps on his heels.      Hurry it up, he whispers, clouting him on the back of the head with the sack. Unless you feel the need for a goodbye kiss from your ma.      Outside the air is cold and wet and, low down—down around his knees—gauzy with dawn vapors, and underneath the vapors the frozen grass breaks beneath the boy’s boots with a sound like ice chewed behind closed lips. His ice-cold boots mash his toes, but it’s not until they’ve walked through their yard and the Slovak’s that a space opens up between two ribbons of mist and the boy sees that the boots are pinching his feet not because they’re cold or wet but because the old man has handed him Jimmy’s instead of his own. They had been the boy’s, up until about three months ago, but even though Jimmy is two years older and two inches taller than the boy, his feet have been a size smaller than the boy’s since he was eight years old, and just before Thanksgiving the boy had traded Jimmy his shoes for the pants he’s wearing now. The pants are a little long on him, a little loose in the waist, the outgrown boots squeeze his feet like a huckster’s handshake. But when he turns back toward the house there is the old man, hissing,      C’mon, c’mon, hurry it up. It’s late enough already.      All around them the dark round shapes of their neighbors’ cars loom out of the fog like low-tide boulders, and down at the end of the block the cab of the old man’s flatbed truck rises above them, a breaching whale. The cab is white, or was white; it’s barnacled with flecked rust now, a lacy caul of condensation veils the windscreen. The boy stares at the soft-skull shape of it as he minces down the block, not quite understanding why the sight is confusing, unsettling even. Then:      Hey Dad. Why’d you park all the way—      The old man cuts him off with another Sshh! and then, when the driver’s side door breaks open from the cab with the same sound the shade tree made when it fell in front of the garage three winters ago, the boy suddenly realizes how quiet their street is, and the streets beyond theirs. Seatsprings creak and whine like the grade school orchestra as the old man settles into the cab, the pillowcase rustles audibly as the boy takes it from him and drops it to his lap. Then glass clinks as the old man opens his coat and pulls what looks like an empty bottle from a pocket in the lining, and when he arches his head back to suck whatever imagined vapor lingers in the brown glass the sound that comes from his loose dentures is the same sound that Gregory makes when his mother puts a bottle to his toothless lips. And all of these noises are as familiar to the boy as the thinning strands of the old man’s hair, his winter-burned scalp, the globe of bone beneath the skin, but just as the half light shadows the old man’s features, deepening and obscuring them, the morning hush seems to amplify the noises in the cab, giving them the ominous sharpness of a moie soundtrack. And there is a hardness to the old man’s eyes as well, slitted into the ravines of his slack stubbled cheeks, a glint Duke once said always came about nine months before another baby. The boy can’t remember if Duke had said that before or after the old man whipped him.      The old man throws the empty bottle with the others at the boy’s feet and straightens behind the wheel. His left and right hands work choke and key with the resigned rhythm of a chain gang, and after three rounds the engine turns over once, twice, then chugs into life with a lifelong smoker’s cough, and the boy remembers something else Duke had said about the old man. The old man, Duke said, used to smoke like everyone else, but he gave it up when one time his breath was so strong his burps caught fire, and he pointed to the charred leather above the driver’s seat as proof. Sitting in the cab now, it is easy to believe Duke’s story. Everything about the truck is animated as a carnival, from the trampolining seat to the pneumatic sigh of the clutch to the spindly stick of the gearshift, which the old man manipulates as though it were a cross between a magic wand and a knob-headed cane. Down around the boy’s throbbing feet the glass bottles tinkle their accompaniment and up above are the old man’s fiercely focused eyes, and the boy is so distracted by all this drama that he nearly forgets to take a last look at his house. By the time he turns all he sees are the empty panes of glass in the garage door that the shade tree smashed when it fell. The black rectangles gape like lost teeth amid the frosted white panes, like pages ripped from a book or tombstones stolen from a graveyard, and for some reason the sight of them fills the boy with a sense of loss and dread. Then there is just the shade tree, dead now, leafless and twigless but otherwise intact, and still blocking the garage door as it has for the past three years.       Brentwood, Long Island, 1956. The most important local industry might not be the Entenmann’s factory but it is to a boy of twelve, almost thirteen, and as the truck rattles down Fifth Avenue the boy cracks open the triangular front window in his door and presses his nose to it as he always does. It is too cold and the factory is six blocks away and the boy can smell little more than a ghost of sugar on the wet air, but in his mind the street is doughy as a country kitchen, and as he inhales he pretends he can sort the different odors of crumb and glazed and chocolate-covered donuts from an imaginary baker’s hash of heat and wheat and yeast. The sharp vanilla edge of angel food cake or the cherry tinge of frosted Danish or his favorite, the soft almost wet odor of all-butter French loaf. He likes it for the name even more than the taste—a loaf they call it, like bread, when it is sweeter than any cake. In fact he has eaten it so few times the taste is a memory trapped in his head in a space apart from his tongue, but whenever he stocks the pastries section of Slaussen’s Market his nostrils flare as if they can smell the bricksized loaves through waxed cardboard and cellophane.      It’s when they pass Slaussen’s that the boy realizes they’re headed for the Southern State. Big white signs fill the store’s dark windows. Pork chops 19¢/lb! Idaho potatoes, perfect for baking! Order your xmas turkey now! The boy turns his head to stare at this last notice as they drive by. It’s the second week of January and the disjunction tickles his mind, but only faintly, like the flavor of all-butter French loaf. But then he remembers something else.      Will I be back for work?      The way the old man operates the truck reminds the boy of a puppet show. He is all elbows and knees, jerks and lunges and rapid glances to left and right, and he doesn’t spare an eye for the boy when he answers him.      Close your window, he says. And then: What time do you clock in?      I go in after school.      The old man turns right onto Spur Drive North without slowing, drops the truck into second in an attempt to maintain speed up the on-ramp. The tires squeal around the corner and the truck bucks as though running over a body when the old man downshifts, and then the ancient engine hauls the truck up the incline like a man pulling a sled by a rope.      What time do you clock in?      The boy doesn’t answer. Instead he watches the road, not afraid, only mildly curious, as the truck slides across both lanes of the parkway and drops two tires into the center median before the old man steadies its course. The old man has gone into the median so many times that the older boys refer to the strip of grass as the Lloyd Parkway, and one time, according to Duke, the old man went all the way over to the eastbound lane and was halfway to work before he realized it. Now he continues half-on and half-off the road for another quarter mile before jerking the truck back into the left lane.      Did you close your window?      The boy looks up. The old man is using the end of his sleeve to rub something, dust or frost, off a gauge on the dash, and when he’s finished he squints at the gauge and then he says, You won’t be going into Slaussen’s tonight. He looks down at the boy and lets the big wheel go slack in his hands. Where you’re going you’ll wish sacks of potatoes was all you had to haul around. Shit, boy, he says, that’s what you’ll be carting soon. Wheelbarrels full of—      The crunch of median gravel under the left front tire brings his attention back to the road. The steering wheel is as big as a pizza and twirls like one too, as the old man wrestles the truck onto the roadway.

The life of Steve Reeves had three major parts: First there was Steve Reeves the ultimate, and in my opinion, incomparable world class bodybuilder. He won all the National and International bodybuilding titles without using steroids, artificial enhancers or unethical practices. Steve was hard-working and innovative. His sharp mind and determination mixed workouts with nutrition to create a magnificent male body. Next there was Steve Reeves the actor who filled our movie theater screens with sensational, larger than life portrayals. He played the lead in fifteen movies including Hercules, The Thief of Baghdad, Duel of the Titans, Son of Spartacus, and Goliath and the Barbarians. His personal favorite was Long Ride from Hell - his only Western Last there was Steve Reeves the rancher, horse breeder and author. Steve was never deluded about being a great actor. He made movies in order to build a nest egg which enabled him to own and enjoy a couple of ranches back home in the Western United States. Ranching was always his first love and passion. This Steve Reeves was mostly out of the limelight. He spent his time hard at work digging post holes and breeding gaited Morgan horses. This book is about my life with Steve Reeves, the rancher, during the last seven years of his life. It is written from the perspective of a woman who was (and will always be) deeply, madly in love with Steve Reeves I am writing these memories down now due to concerns that dementia, the disease which has devastated my mother's mind, may be germinating in me. It is a case of "before I forget what I can still remember." I have relied heavily on my personal journals to bring focus to that which the passage of time, my series of small strokes and what might be dementia, has fogged. I do not want the memory of my Stephen (Steve Reeves to millions of fans) to dissolve and become forever lost. He was such a remarkable man. Once I knew him, I would never be the same. Steve Reeves was more than just an actor with a powerful physique. He was quite brilliant. He would examine a machine, tool or product and then explain how he would change this part or that aspect to improve its function. He used a complex combination of his natural creativity with his work experience and logic to improve the workings or the designs of many things. Experiencing first hand his ability to improve on every-thing that arrived on the ranch (from a brand-new Featherlite horse trailer to halters and toilet roll holders) made me wish his fans could realize how much more there was to their Steve Reeves. His face, his physique, his movies and his voice were only a small part of the total man. Add to those attributes, among other things, his expert knowledge of physical training and nutrition. His work ethic was unsurpassed and his determination to improve the Morgan horse breed was tragically interrupted. (Black and White Version)

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. he was just a man.... By Philipp Göschl Interesting new unknown sides of the legendary bodybuilder and moviestar Icon Steve Reeves. His private life, hard working, earning money, satisfying Fans, and being lonely and depressed from time to time. And Sex! Why not? He was a legend! Yes! But after all, he was also just a man...

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Steve Reeves - Tarnished Legend By Bigbadjohn This was primarily a diary which told about daily sexual activities (several per day) and what was eaten meal by meal. It was sad in that Steve Reeves came across as a mean spirited, self-centered man who treated the author like a sex slave. Since it was pretty much the same chapter after chapter - only the food changed- it became tedious and boring.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Revelation of an Icon By Amazon Customer It was a very insightful read and I liked her style in which the chapters were short and to the point. The sad part was finding out that Steve Reeves suffered the same type of problems of depression as the rest of us go through at times, even though he seemed to have just about as charmed of a life as most of us yearn for. When I was a teenager he was the one bodybuilder I used as my inspiration to attain the type of physique I was trying to build, too bad he didn't write the book 'Building the Classic Physique the Natural Way" back in the 1960's, maybe the steroid era would have been stopped or at least slowed down. I think that Deborah is one classy lady for having to put up with Stephen, as she called him, with his mood swings as well as with the mental abuse she went through. But that is what LOVE is all about. Don't get me wrong, I still have admiration for Steve Reeves and all that he achieved, it's just that he's been put down a few notches in my eyes. As far as some of his friends, they weren't really friends after the way they treated his remains and property after he passed away and with the way Deborah was treated by them.
