*Includes pictures *Includes Elliot's own quotes about her life and career *Includes footnotes and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “If you truly dig what you are doing, if you lay it out that way, nobody can not respond. That's what rock and roll is; it's relentless.” – Mama Cass A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. In the 1950s, popular music in the United States, Britain, and Europe jumped cultural tracks and went off in all directions, each form enjoying its own fan base, and its own way of overlapping with fellow genres. From the straight-laced life of the American 1950s, the social revolution that led to the unfettered 1960s spurred the accelerating development of rock music, an enormous industry of folk artists and hybrid masterpieces that could previously only have survived in a cell of “specialty” interest, along with an explosion of varying jazz styles. The African-American musical community massaged the traditional blues genre into countless personalities after discovering that it fit with almost every type of musical expression available, and even classical music splintered into a myriad of new interests, leaving the traditional viewpoint of the 19th and early 20th centuries behind. In short, musical exploration went off into a frenzy of change, and there were as many avenues of musical performance to join as there were distinct cultural groups to sustain them. On top of this fragmenting of styles, in which newly emerging social groups could adopt a distinctly tailored version for themselves, the era of the flower child dawned in California. This phenomenon increased both the options for original musical creations, and exponentially, the possibilities for melding the legion of styles, recently-formed social beliefs and behaviors, a new visual presentation and celebration of the self, and the celebration of traditionally revered melody and harmony. Such an age could not have served as a better societal laboratory in which to produce an enigmatic, talent-laden, highly intelligent, vocally-gifted, and contrasting artist to previous norms, such as Cass Elliot, endearingly known to millions as Mama Cass. Primarily hailed as a member of the legendary group, The Mamas & the Papas, Cass would lead other bands as the only female singer. Her fame there does not go unrecognized because these bands were of inferior quality. To the contrary, her work with the Triumvirate, the Big Three, and the Mugwumps, was exceptional. However, the blossoming hippie movement required an iconic hippie band, and The Mamas & the Papas were perfectly designed to serve as the prototype. Part of this lay in visual perception, as America was not yet prepared to adore a lead female singer who did not come from either a sanitized version of the Madison Avenue model, or the from the nature-fresh, abstract hippie image. Mixing the hippie beauty and cinematic, boardwalk look of Michelle Phillips, The Mamas and Papas soprano and former model, with the “earth mother” appearance and dark timbre of contralto Cass Elliot, not only made Elliot’s participation possible through a successful contrast, but enabled the group to assemble its distinct, accurate, and rich vocal personality. Once the band’s breakup occurred only a few short years later, Cass Elliot was free to move at will in the soloist’s world, and appeared on every important talk show, worked with dozens of famous artists from different generations, and compiled a discography considerably larger than is generally known.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, in spite of mistakes. By FMG I am a big Mamas and the Papas fan, so I enjoy anything about them, and especially about Mama Cass. But this book seemed to be hurriedly researched and had some mistakes. It was not John Phillips who opened the door when they met Cass - it was Michelle. (She tells about this in her book 'California Dreamin', and I've heard and read her tell it in interviews on TV, and in printed articles many times.) Also, Michelle did not write "You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again". It was written by Julia Phillips (no relation to John or Michelle). Still, Mama Cass was my favorite singer, and I enjoyed reading this in spite of mistakes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Extremely helpful guide and an easy read. Highly recommended. By Regan Glover As someone who is learning from scratch how to utilize the many benefits of online marketing / media, I found this to be an extremely informative guide to starting a blog and making it work. There are great tips on how to get started, but also how to connect it to my business and ideas of where to reach out to strengthen the platform and readership organically (meaning for free instead of paying). Great read for beginners like me, and it's short so I can get started on my work instead of reading for 20 hours. Thanks so much, this was great!

Faye Hueston was born in a Salvation Army Home for Unwed Mothers in Los Angeles, California. Adopted at 18 months, she was raised in a home of affluence as the daughter of Fanchon of Fanchon and Marco, the foremost producers of musical revues in the ’20s and ’30s. Bing Crosby, Myrna Loy and Judy Garland were some of the performers who got their start in a Fanchon & Marco revue. Fanchon also became the first woman film producer in Hollywood in the 1930s. Faye grew up in the Hollywood of the ’30s, becoming a film actress herself in the 1940s. However, she was always more interested in writing and books. In her forties, while living in England, Faye embarked on a search for her birth parents, whose names she had discovered on her original birth certificate. Since the relationship with her adoptive father had been difficult, it was her birth father she most wanted to find. A friend sent her to the foremost medium in England, who told her that her father was dead, that he had been an alcoholic, and that he was filled with remorse for what he had done to Sarah. Three years later she found her birth mother through clues that came from the same medium. “Sarah” was the name of her birth mother, whom her father had abandoned when she became pregnant. None of this did Faye want to be true. Months later, her private investigator’s report confirmed the medium’s clairvoyance. Three years later she found her birth mother through clues obtained from the same medium. How the meeting with Sarah ended forms part of Faye’s story, which has many twists and turns along the way.

It's a detective story about the quest of adoptee Faye Hueston to find her birth father that offers a glimpse into her early life as the adopted daughter of the woman at the center of the entertainment industry during the 1930s.

It Was the End of Days. The world had less than seven hours to prepare. When it hit, the coronal mass ejection from the sun rolled back hundreds of years of technological innovation. Airplanes fell from the skies. Power grids crashed. Even electrical cabling was turned to slag. No internet. No cable TV. No electricity. No modern day conveniences of any kind, from fancy European sedans to smart phones to clean, running water. The entire world is plunged back into the Dark Ages in less than a second, courtesy of the most powerful Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) event in recorded history. Television development exec Tony Vincenzo has always lived a high-society life, first in Los Angeles, now in Manhattan. As New York City tears itself apart in an orgy of violence, Vincenzo has to leave his high-floor luxury condominium on Central Park South's Billionaire's Row in order to return to his wife and young son in the Hollywood Hills overlooking LA. But the only way to get there is to walk, and Vincenzo is no Joe Survivalist—he's the kind of guy used to the trappings of the good life. While society unravels all around him, he has to not only make it out of New York alive, but across the entirety of a nation descending into feral madness. His journey becomes more complex when he commits a truly selfless deed, and winds up with two young charges: seven-year-old Daniel, an autistic boy ill-equipped for a life of hardship, and his sassy four-year-old sister, Gabriella. Together, the trio will need every stroke of luck they can find to persevere in the lawless lands that lie ahead of them…and survive the brutality of the serial killer Roth who pursues them.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. “Welcome to the new normal,” Vincenzo said. “The world’s changed. This is how it’s going to be for a while.” By Cheryl Stout Tony Vincenzo is a television executive in NYC. He's just moved to New York and his wife and son, left behind in Los Angeles, are supposed to follow him after the school year ends.On June 7, a massive electromagnetic pulse hits Earth and suddenly everyone's way of life goes back in time a couple hundred years - no electricity, no running water, no phone service, most cars, planes and other vehicles don't work plus much more and it will be months and maybe years before things get back to normal.Vincent has to get back to L.A. and the only way to get there is to walk. So he starts off cross-country and finds that most people are willing to kill to stay alive including himself. This is a super post-apocalyptic story, the first book in a series. I liked the detail that author Knight went into in the story, telling about Vincenzo's travels - from New York across New Jersey to Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio.Along the way he has run-ins with gangs, a husband with a pregnant wife, two small children that need his help, and a serial killer.I'm not sure when the next book in the series is due out but I hope it's soon. One small negative: the author seemed rather obsessed with everyone's bowel habits in the story.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding By Rod Fantastic. Really enjoyed this ... powered through it effortlessly in a day and a half. The characters are real, believable and intriguing. The introduction of the two children comes without any feeling of plot manipulation, and the storyline is very compelling. I've read a ton of post-apocalyptic fiction and this is one of the best. The only thing that's a bummer... is that there isn't a part 2 and the story isn't over!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Surviving the New Normal By india51 First thing to note this is just the first book in a series. We only make it from NYC to eastern Ohio, headed to Missouri and maybe finally to California; so no conclusion with this book. Stephen Knight took as his main character, a guy named Tony, a limousine liberal, millionaire television producer, solid Democrat voter, second or third generation Italian. So there is a bit of the angst that goes along with the character, the sincere beliefs that the government is there to help you, that the police are there to protect you, and that people will be there for each other. This does make the first half of the book slow as Tony makes the necessary adjustments in his thinking in order to survive the new coming normal. All in all, the collapse that the author portrays rings true. A massive CME hits the planet and the world heads back in time to the Bronze Age, and Tony is left to get himself out of NYC with the worries of his dysfunctional wife and little boy that he left alone in Los Angeles. By the time he reaches New Jersey on foot, Tony has toughened up in more ways than one. Knight uses an escaped band of convicts in the book to help drive the story; and Tony. I would think with the country sinking into chaos that this plot device is a bit unnecessary and diverts time and attention from the real story, which is Tony's odyssey to reach his wife and son; not the inner workings of the mind of a patriotic psychopath. But this book is different enough to make it interesting, Tony is a complicated enough character to keep one's interest, and there are enough twists and turns in the story to make this a solid book.

Ruskuski The second Highland Brother's story Chase Highland painter/artist has been commissioned to paint a portrait of Senator Lowe's daughter. Much to his chagrin Chase is just not in the mood to cater to a snotty female who obviously thinks she can't find time to FIT him into her busy schedule.Claire Lowe is a disgruntle pawn of her father. She abhors his constantly putting her in a position of being his ambassador and his wife substitute in charging of making him look good. She is resentful and trapped and can see no way out. Now she has to sit in a stiff position and cater to a moody painter for a portrait she does not want. The author has done a really nice job of creating two characters who clash and clamber and spit and fume and all the while the physical chemistry is off the charts. Can two very different and very volatile people truly be fated mates. Or, is this all one big blah. I love the way the characters interact and the way the author has chosen to bring them into this situation and to help them find their way. I think you will too.

She has no real life of her own. Everything is regimented for her. Chase is a Sexy and well-known artist hired to paint Claire's portrait. His bear recognizes Claire as his mate. Chase convinces her to go away with him for a few days to complete the painting. He is hoping that she will understand and accept his claiming. The sex could be better but the dialogue from Claire during sex needs some work. Chase needed someone with some personality and spark. This just seemed to be lacking a lot of give and take. This was all Chase.

Being a politicians daughter isn't easy, working on a schedule seemed so robotic, never having time for yourself. But here comes a stranger who shattered all that and opened Claires eyes to what a normal life is supposed to be. Always taking orders, doing what everyone told her to do, especially her dad. Now Chase came along and showed her that she's her own person, and she can make her own decisions. Love always Concurs all...love it.

By Susie Gates Beguiled by the title and story line, I read through in just a couple of days. Ms. Amerine deftly wove her characters' life ambitions with their past experiences to capture and hold my interest throughout their suspenseful adventures. Like other authors I enjoy, she left me wanting more so I'll be on the lookout for a sequel, or maybe a series. Most definitely worth your time and a great beach or vacation read this summer!

It was a fascinating read. Emotions run high in this novel...a struggle for independence vs. love and responsibility tearing at each other. A mystery of danger and intrigue coupled with history and hints of romance. Hope there will be a sequel.

With boundless energy and bubbly personality, author C.A. Hill's mother stayed active with her friends and activities. It was a joy to see her live each day to the fullest with such a positive attitude. But the time came when her mother-always full of zest-began to change. Hill could no longer deny or ignore the signs. It was evident her mother wasn't thinking rationally and could no longer make the right decisions for herself. In The Last Seven Years, Hill chronicles her firsthand experiences as she took the role of caregiver and responsible party and witnessed her mother's transition from an independent, effervescent woman to an empty shell of her former self. Spanning the last seven years of her mother's decline, this memoir offers an accurate account of the stages encountered through the aging process. Though it reads somewhat like a novel, this story presents a true documentation of how physical and mental behaviors changed the course of Hill's mother's life. The Last Seven Years points out how menacing the physical changes and behaviors can be for an aging parent. This narrative provides a unique perspective on how to get through the rough times and still keep your parent happy, healthy, comfortable, and safe.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Spun from the Knotty Yarn of Hands-On Experience. By Donna Quesada An honest and heartfelt telling of a painful life transition. This well-told collection of stories garnered from real experience offers moral support as well as practical advice.Following each chapter, and the story it contains, is a practical summary and overview, useful to anyone who may be, or may one day be, in the position of having to make decisions for an elderly loved one (potentially all of us). The tips contained in these "recap" sections are conveniently placed and useful in sorting out concepts we've all heard of, yet never really understood, such as the differences between assisted living and nursing homes, as well as their benefits and drawbacks. These sections also point out things to watch for, such as possible stages to expect in our aging parents, for example, the all too common symptoms of paranoia and confusion, as well as the more dangerous, gullibility.Hill helps us recognize and navigate these unpredictable developments, with the goal of not only making us more aware of these behaviors, but also of keeping our aging parent out of harm's way. Yet, for all of the invaluable practical advice, gained from the toils of personal experience, The Last Seven Years reads like a novel and is thus unlike other instructional or informative guides on dementia, which often provide only abstract pointers devoid of context. In summary, this book traces the stages of the aging process, especially as accompanied by memory loss, while pointing out the early signs and red flags that family members may otherwise miss. It is something no one wants to think about, but Hill's honest stories and advice make it a bit easier. It is an inside look at how dementia can affect, not only the aging one, but also those around them. The Last Seven Years provides necessary information in the form of highly readable narratives spun from the knotty yarn of hands-on experience.

By Wyatt Davis I've been through this journey myself and would like to say that I wish she had written this sooner! It would have helped. Not only does she tell her personal story, she gives a recap at the end of each chapter with important points, signs to look for and tips on navigating the world of elder care. If you or anyone you know may be caring for a loved one with a degenerating illness, I highly recommend this book.
