The primary backdrop of Propositions by Tania Joyce is Sydney, and because I have extensively vacationed in the land down under, the author's use of the continent's landmarks, expressions and locations, brought back many wonderful memories. This book has two very strong main characters, hotel magnate Nate Somers and successful event strategist Jessica Mason. Nate has hired Jessica's company to handle the opening of his new hotel on the waterfront. A successful hotel launch will catapult Jessica's boutique firm into the big leagues, while ensuring Nate's position at the helm of his family's hotel conglomerate.To begin with, the cover of this book is hot, which personifies the relationship between Jessica and Nate perfectly. They are a passionate couple and I really liked how Ms. Joyce interpreted the love at first sight perspective. Their love scenes were both sensual and sexy. I liked them both as individuals as well. Jessica worked very hard to be where she is today, owning her own company while raising a now adult son. Nate grew up with an overbearing father, who to this day is constantly pushing his buttons. Not to mention a gold-digging ex-wife and a lovely daughter that he is barely allowed to spend time with. Both are divorced, with an extreme need to succeed in their professional lives.Propositions is a refreshing and touching contemporary romance. It is complete with desire, well-defined characters and a compelling storyline. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. FULL OF TWISTS AND TURNS By kendra When I started reading Propositions I never expected the book to take the turns or the ups and downs that it did. This book will have you going through many emotional moments that are experienced in real life and real relationships. Although it is fiction, it felt as if I was living it right along with the characters.The story line was well developed and flowed nicely throughout the book. The characters are very well developed which made it easy to fall in love with each and every one of them, but it wasn't the main characters that I fell in love with it is a secondary one by the name of Troy, Jessica's ex from high school.! In this book you will see Jessica and Nate make some decisions which many may feel are inappropriate because of the way their relationship starts, but that's life right? You will see someone being hurt by love and an assumed betrayal and you will see a relationship begin and end several times, but when all is said and done, will it survive all? Is love enough? You will have to read it like I did to find out! I recommend you do just that!If Tania Joyce were to write another story about some of the characters from this book then I would definitely read it for sure as this book pulled at my heartstrings

By Tim Ahern Ron McAdow's Ike draws the reader into a constellation of human interrelationships that acquire layers of humor and deeper meaning as it proceeds. McAdow's style shares something with that of Haruki Murakami, succeeding as it does in getting us to inhabit the inner lives of the characters as they go through their daily routines while encountering surprises along the way. There is a genuine likability to them, which is probably a reflection of McAdow himself.

I feel as if I’ve actually met each character personally as McAdow reveals such clear images. There are moments of touching vulnerability, and disarming honesty for Ike and his struggles. I have a genuine affection for him and his story.

Too many modern novels feature severely dysfunction people who are so unhappy (and often so screwed up and nasty) that I don’t want to read about them. So it was a pleasurable surprise to find IKE, by Ron McAdow, in which almost all of the characters are sympathetic, likable if quirky and fallible people. Ike, the protagonist, is married to Helen, a beautiful, free-spirited woman a bit older than he is. Ike becomes a friend and mentor to Sean and Denver, his stepsons. Over the course of the novel, Ike, a television talk show host, loses his job and slowly realizes that he is unhappy in his marriage. Then he discovers that Helen has been unfaithful, and at novel’s end he enters a new relationship. Happy ending.There is no high drama or much of a plot. It's just about a nice guy who got himself into a marriage that didn't work out. In this regard he is not unlike many others, of course. Ron McAdow is really good at writing dialogue, however, capturing everyday banter very well. Here, at random, is a segment in which Ike is visiting his parents along with his sister Kate and her dog Fievel. His parents are playing gin rummy while Kate looks at old family albums:“Fievel! Want to see me on my first day of kindergarten?” He started across the room toward the sofa.“Don’t let him drool on those photographs,” my father warned from the dining room table.“Hear that, Fievel?” Kate asked. She pushed the album toward me to make more room on her lap for the dog. “No drooling! He hardly ever drools any more, Daddy. I think that’s something his yoga has really helped with.”“Kate, do you make that dog do yoga?” my mother asked. She had little patience with Kate’s ditziness.“Mom, do you remember where we got this bunny blouse I wore to kindergarten. God it was cute. I wonder if it’s still up there.” She and Fievel dashed up the stairs.“Did you know she has that dog do yoga?” my mother asked my father.“Fievel shares Kate’s interests,” he said, in a tone of pleasant insincerity. “It seems natural enough to me.”“There’s nothing natural about it. I knock with two.”“Ouch,” my father said.I hope to write fiction myself at some point. So far, I’ve written nonfiction books such as Uncommon Grounds, the history of coffee. For 35 years, Betty Ridge covered the news in northeastern Oklahoma. She got up in the middle of the night to head to fires, shootings, drug busts. Government officials, politicians and cops became part of her daily routine. She met characters such as "Diamond" Dayne Henry, who could be described as Muskogee's favorite pimp; and Billy Joe Clegg, an evangelist and politician whose slogan was "vote for Clegg, he won't pull your leg." Some of the crime stories are so pathetic they're funny. There was the bank robber who wrote his holdup note on his paycheck stub. And the bank robber who took a cab to the bank, asking the driver to wait while he went inside to commit his crime. A knife named "Little Walter" became a character in itself, eventually leading to its owner's demise. But most touching of all were the victims. There was the young mother who, with her 5-year-old son, was slain by a man with a fatal obsession about her. Another mother burned to death in her home, with her four children. Her husband, who she feared and wished to divorce, was convicted of setting the fire that killed them. A 4-year-old boy was found in a pen, beside other pens of dogs at a puppy mill. A 12-year-old girl testified how her stepfather raped her while her mother watched. Deadlines tells their stories and the effect reporting on these tragedies had on her life. After undergoing a personal crisis, she found redemption, in the last place she expected. Two chapters of Deadlines have won awards for nonfiction writing in competition at Rose State College.

The author was privileged to witness some extraordinary history, but also cursed with the demons the more tragic experiences left behind. I shook my head many times, marveling that these outrageous stories really happened. Though a non-fiction book covering real events, the stories prompt strong emotions. Funny, moving, disturbing, heart-breaking, horrifying, and captivating, Deadlines will keep you up late, reading "just one more" chapter, and wishing for more when you reach the end.

About the Author Rebeca Rodríguez Rodríguez nació en Madrid en 1978. A Practical And Entertaining Book For Chief Marketing Officers And Unicorns Alike By Nathan Albright [Note: This book was given out as free promotional material at Domopalooza before its publication date.]This book manages to combine a lot of different trends and approaches together that would seem to exist in tension but also work well together. This book is clearly marketed at Chief Marketing Officers or other related executives, and it is written in such a way that it appeals to the insight and wisdom of well-respected business leaders who are well-recognized in the field. The book combines a ruthlessly blunt approach to measuring whether marketing ideas work, but shows a humane attitude towards people, especially workers. This is a good approach to take, as sometimes people view their ideas with more respect than other people. This book is also an example of a project where someone put their spend where their mouth was, so to speak, in submitting ideas to the marketplace of ideas and leveraging the wisdom of crowds to deliver relevant content.In terms of its principles, the book is consistent and detailed in what it means, with case studies to support its opinions. Its ten principles include the importance of goals, the need for shared vision, the role of data in inspiring creativity, the importance of finding unicorns [1], the importance of culture in predicting success and failure, choosing measurements wisely, the worth of measurement, continuous improvement, customization and individualization, and building a framework for improvement. The book, including two great case studies in the appendices, comes in at a bit more than 300 pages, a lot of which is made up of pages of comments and insights gained from actual business and marketing campaigns. Reading this book and checking out its associated content (like an excellent video about hands only cpr from Vinnie Jones) is an eye-opening experience into the difference between viral views and actual, meaningful results.This is a fine book to read, but even more so it is written for application. The book presents some stiff challenges to Chief Marketing Officers about the need to align marketing goals with business objectives, the need to seek less domineering and more complicated staff, and the need for marketing to reach women better. However, this somewhat tough advice is blended with providing marketing executives with the data needed to support bold initiatives with risk and reward possibilities in an attitude of iterative experimental design. For those marketing executives willing and able to put the insight of this book into practice, there is a potential of support and encouragement. To commit to any change, whether of a moral nature or a strategic nature, is a difficult matter, and this book, written as it is by consulting leaders in helping to encourage such cultural changes in business, is sorely needed.[1] The book calls those who are data-friendly, cooperative, sensitive to the needs of others, smart, resilient, and achievers unicorns. I’m not sure I like being called a unicorn.

Then they share what they have learned with as many people as possible.In this volume they introduce a four-step process with ten core principles that will help business leaders in almost any organization (whatever its size and nature may be) to deliver "true business value in digital marketing." Stelter The straight-forward title certainly suggests the central theme of the book, which is refreshing in a category where big ideas are frequent, but execution and actionable analysis are often left unexamined. The book is in part a practical guide, lending insight from numerous thought leaders throughout, and inspires action. And is also part reference for an organizational vision, covering topics such as fostering an innovative culture and encouraging professional development.Perhaps most appealing to the business-minded reader, each principle focuses on measurable results. In some cases, those results may not be "positive", but this (relentless) pursuit to quantify sets the foundation for identifying ways to improve. That honesty is present throughout the book, and speaks to the collective real-world experience of the authors and contributors shared in each chapter.Having worked in product development and business development roles for a wide range of digital businesses spanning start-ups to publicly traded companies, each chapter reminded me of the wide variety of challenges most organizations face. The principles and insights in this book can be applied to many, and perhaps most importantly, provide a framework for continual improvement that can be utilized personally and professionally. So, as a book, Does it Work? Yes. Yes it does.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Character Study as Well as a Historical Study By HOWARD M MERKEN I liked this short collection of essays. It sheds light on Jewish history, especially the era of the founding days of modern Israel, and the decades before and after that. I like Begin anyway, probably because I have similar attitudes on life, even if not the same exact religious views.Historically, there is the reality of Begin, who he was, what he believed, and what he did. Presented here is a bit of a character study of Begin vs. Ben-Gurion. Begin's "The Revolt" was also a character study, but only of Begin himself, so this collection of essays extends the character study.

By Yennely Perez Lo primero que llamo mi atencion del libro fue la portada y el titulo, por eso me anime a leerlo.Desde el dia en que te vi es una linda historia de amor ente Esteban y Alba, me enamore de los personajes.Alba una chica que desde joven se ve envuelta en la mentira que sus padres crearon por su bien, de adulta no soporta la mentira, le afecta muchisimo y es lo unico que le pide a sus parejas, que no le mientan.Muy joven conoce al que sera su primer amor pero todo termina muy mal y ella se encierra en si misma por miedo a que le rompan el corazon de nuevo.Un dia en que lleva mucha prisa conoce a Esteban, el pijo arrogante, y aunque en un principio se niegue a lo obvio no puede luchar mucho con sus sentimientos y sus deseos de estar con el, asi que Alba le da una nueva oportunidad al amor. In fact, one evening my wife looked at the book while I was reading in bed and said: "You're reading Alice Hoffman? I've read Alice Hoffman. But you don't read Alice Hoffman!"And so I DID read Alice Hoffman and I liked Alice Hoffman. This is a very good book. It's real deep and very weighty."Dovekeepers" orbits around the real life events of the early 70s A.D. in ancient Judea. Rome was large and in charge and in the midst of shattering a Judean rebellion (seen commemorated in the famous Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum only a few hundred yards from the Colosseum in Italy). Several hundred Jews fled Jerusalem to the desert near the Dead Sea and moved into the former mountain fortress of King Herod at Masada. While the proud Jewish rebels held off a Roman legion for several years, Rome ultimately prevailed and all but two women and five children killed themselves rather than allow themselves to be overrun.Hoffman's novel follows the lives of four women who all find themselves on Masada. Each woman has a dedicated 100-150 pages that weave in and out of each other's stories with the collective whole building a comprehensive picture of their mutual plight. The stories connect the women together in ways that are obvious and follow the primary arc of the novel, but also in ways that are surprising and poignantly fulfilling. The connections build and develop on many levels: physically, emotionally, and symbolically.The book is full of characters who are broken and hurt; affected by some deep trauma catalyzed by the Roman attacks on Jerusalem; driving each, by their own will or otherwise, to the fortress in the desert. One of Hoffman's women is Yael, a deeply fractured and self actualizing individual who sums up the disparate journeys that brought the women to Masada: "We came like doves across the desert. In a time when there was nothing but death, we were grateful for anything, and most grateful of all when we awoke to another day."You'll feel the weight of each character's pain and sorrow increase as the novel progresses. There are few happy endings. Hoffman's themes cover the gamut from fate and destiny, to religion and love, and the depths of devotion.Faith is a thread that runs throughout Hoffman's carefully woven tapestry. It's not just a religious entity, but something that binds individuals, family units, as well as the entire rebel community. In Revka, Hoffman ponders the rebel Jews: "If we lost our faith, we would become like the clouds that swell across the western sky when the wind pushes them into the desert promising rain but empty inside." It's through Revka also that Hoffman finally (about half-way through he book) provides a heart-wrenchingly warm and genuinely surprising treat at the end of her particular novella. For the first time the furrow on my brow melted into a smile on my face (note: it didn't last very long).Hoffman's Judean world is one of religion and tradition, of myth and magic: a world where everything in it has significance...symbolic or real. Some vignettes read almost as something out of a fantasy novel, but there's no melodrama to their weight.In looking for a good way to summarize the books' tone, I found a couple of strong quotes. This first comes from Shirah, `The Witch of Moab': "Being human means losing everything we love best in the world. But would you ask to be anything else?" This second is from Revka: "...our waking life is formed by our sorrow. " In each character is anchored a heavy weight.In this misogynistic society, few men come across in a truly positive light. Though Hoffman writes very sparingly, in her few words, she's able to expresses a multiplicity of ideas and thoughts. Characters are never solely what they seem to be and there is very little that is purely black or white. Hoffman's world is filled with shades of gray.This book is going to resonate strongly for a lot of readers. It may be a bit polarizing because of its very serious nature. But as a first time reader of Hoffman, and a male, I feel fuller for having read this novel. I highly recommend it.

A masterpiece By JoanOH I am actually quite humbled to offer up a review on Alice Hoffman's THE DOVEKEEPERS because I am not so sure any words I use to review it will do it justice. This book is not to be missed. The story is based on history brought to life through the amazing writing talents of the author. I don't believe I've read a work of fiction that so seamlessly brings together the very essence of a period in history by integrating characters, environment, historical setting and emotions in such a way that the reader can feel, smell, hear and breathe in the same environment in which the characters live. The level of detail is extraordinary, and blended so well with the daily lives of the main characters that the reader is just swept away and creates a world as real as the one in which the reader sits while reading. I enjoyed the way Hoffman brought her female characters to life one by one, then threaded their stories together to reveal little nuances about each one.Prior to reading THE DOVEKEEPERS, I knew nothing about the story of Jews who held out against the Roman army at Masada in 70 C.E., but this story made it easy to become immersed in that period of history, as well as in the lives of the four female main characters. Hoffman's research in this period in history is evident in almost every sentence, yet she presents it in such a beautifully blended manner that the reader does not feel as if they are being beaten up with historical facts. It is a story of treachery, cruelty, dysfunctional families, sex, love, debauchery, friendship, loyalty, and above all else, strong women enduring a traumatic and difficult period in history. But it is written with such superb, lyrical prose that the reader can't help but be drawn in and live front and center with each main character.THE DOVEKEEPERS makes me want to take back every 5 star review of a book I've given on Amazon because this is truly the title that deserves it the most. Don't hesitate to buy this one!

213 of 231 people found the following review helpful. Wow, great, great book By Annie B First I admit to being a huge Alice Hoffman fan. This book, however, is not Hoffman's typical book. It is as the book description says very ambitious. For me, Hoffman's ambitions succeeded beyond my imagination. I loved this book, the characters, the setting, the debates it caused in my own mind over faith and religion.Still, I think this book requires a lot of patience to read. It isn't a genre fiction novel and is long because it was designed to be that way in order to give the characters and the history involved as much space as possible. This is not a book to sit down with and try to read during commercials while watching television. It's a book that requires time and effort--but that time and effor will be well worth it! Just don't expect an average Alice Hoffman book and read it for what it is--a great literary fiction novel. Few writers could bring off this book at all and certainly not with Hoffman's writing expertise. Parts of the book are just brilliantly written and worth reading just for that beauty alone.Overall, fantastic read. Already wishing there was a new Alice Hoffman book on the horizon!
