Whimsy amidst overwhelming anxiety almost never coexist, and yet the author is able to polish a window into the distinctively difficult trials of human existence in such a way as to make laughter and sorrow seem like the natural blend of chocolate sauce on a very accessible dish of curious vanilla ice cream...I applaud her use of a poetic style that reduces the imagery of a soul as large as the universe into captured vignettes of curiosity to be worthy of honor, just because they are shared with us....Thank-you for the effect this work has had on my life.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. First book of many, I hope! By Jewel Green should no longer be considered as the color of envy, but as the color of bravery. To be able to go through some of the things the author of this all to short memoir went through, and still see beauty in beach glass and Bermuda grass is encouraging, to say the least. To be able to put the memories in writing for the world to see is emboldening. We all have ups and downs, heartaches and triumphs in our lives, not all of us are able to share them in such a way that even in the depths of nights' darkness, there is a hope of mornings' light.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A moving memoir, a work of fine, poetic prose. By PHILIP DODD I am glad I came upon this book, Green Like the Color: A Memoir by Green Markos. It is an unusual book. A work of poetic prose, which occasionally flows into verse, I would call it. Unlike some attempts at poetic prose, it never sounds forced or excruciatingly precious, rather only right and natural. Reading this short book was like listening to a young American woman, talking about her childhood, sitting relaxed, in a chair, on her porch. In a good book, there ought to be at least some memorable, quotable lines, I think. In this one, I found quite a few, like this one: "I wanted to leave a few ripples in the water where I had jumped."In her book, Green Markos writes of "cherry red wagons glinting in the sunlight", of an ancient, twisted tree called "night elephant", and of the "wooden whale", but most of all she writes of her mother and father and of how their attempt at an unconventional life led to failure, break down, and parting. With the clean, clear eye of a child, she writes movingly of how it affected her mother and herself when her father left home, abandoning his family behind him. There are lighter moments in the story, too, which is well worth reading. I recommend this book to those who like reading memoirs, poetry, stories, finely told.

Crook I have always been curious about the life and times of Marilyn Monroe, but have only seen a couple of the films and even that episode of “Quantum Leap” where Sam Beckett is sent to help her and fails. Honestly, I know how silly that sounds, but think about that for a moment. Marilyn Monroe has an impact on our society even today. We see her in ads, posters, referenced on television, especially the documentaries on the Kennedy boys, and can still be found on the occasional T-shirt. So, when the opportunity came to read a biography on her, I jumped at it. I was not disappointed. Amie Ryan has done a wonderful job putting the facts together. Norma Jeanne went through hell as a child, receiving little love and care from the strangest people possible throughout her young life. It’s no wonder she was such a beautiful disaster when she became an adult. Ryan’s narrative voice is strong and clear, giving the reader a sense that you and she are having a conversation, rather than just having facts dictated as one would in a lesson. It’s breathtaking, shocking at times, and, of course, since we all know what happened to the poor mistreated woman, heartbreaking even all the more. This is a straightforward non-biased biography on Marilyn’s life, not one of those written after her death that had an underlying agenda. After reading this, I want to see more of her films. I’m already a fan of classic films, so I’m looking forward to it. Amie Ryan’s writing is well done and her voice as the narrator flows smoothly. She makes some choices in punctuation that I wouldn’t, but the sentence structure is well done enough that it causes little issue. I would have appreciated a more concise tracking of time near the end, but that’s my extent of the complaints. I hope to see more of such works from Amie Ryan. This wonderful biography gets 4 ½ out of 5 from me. Once you read this, you’ll want to see all her movies and live that era all again.

By SLM The author's clear spare prose wonderfully brings to life this complex and glamorous figure. You gain not only an understanding of a life lived, but why, and how, and sharp insight into both her character and her times. It really reads as smoothly and compellingly as fiction and I would forget I was reading well tread biography.

Review This is a story of faith, or rather its absence. An Absence of Faith by David W. Gordon is a dark and grimy Christian thriller. I normally don't gravitate to books with religious notes, but I was intrigued by the premise and decided to give it a shot. Wow, am I glad I did! The solid plot kept me interested throughout the novel, and it never bored me. Originally conceived as a graphic novel, the book expresses the confused relationship of the author with "religion, God, life, and death." The themes present throughout this book are universal, and explore matters of faith, good vs. evil, loss, non-functional families, love, the importance of family, and sibling rivalry. Gordon takes the reader on an intense, terrifying journey into the mind-set of a murderer, and paints him thick with terror and evil while doing so. The brutal killer's identity is known by the reader from the start, but it doesn't distract from the tension. The action itself still evokes plenty of suspense.When a young woman's body turns up in the Queens, detective Kate Manning and her partner Mike are assigned to the case. The plot thickens as they find out that this homicide is but the first in a string of identical killings, and that the serial killer has some weird goals in mind. Pretty soon they find themselves entangled in an investigation that will test both their skill and their blooming relationship. The mystery soon erupts into a race against time, and the detectives have to figure out the identity of the murderer before it is too late... Be forewarned that this book isn't for the faint of heart due to the gory and violent content in it. Some scenes were very difficult for me to read, and I was eager to get past them. it is not all gore and guts either. It has enough light moments and thrills, as well as moments of wonder at the depravity of some human beings (even if fictional). I especially liked the way the author explored the psychological aspect of the family connections, dysfunctional to say the least. Some characters were easy to like (Kate, Mike), while others I found very un-relatable and unbelievable (aka Father Gregory) to boot. Sure it's a dark novel, but it is also a story about hope and redemption. The focusing on the budding romance was a nice touch to otherwise grim plot. The characters, even the Villain, find themselves confronting not only their own religious beliefs (or lack thereof) but the way those beliefs effect the behavior of others. The author's personal views are definitely apparent through his writing. He acknowledges through his writing that a person's relationship with God can be just as complex as relationships between people. Central to the story are the two set of siblings who are polar opposites in terms of faith and characteristics. The author illustrates the overriding themes through them, and shows the way their relationships and beliefs impact their choices. . . . it is well written and keeps one captivated. I enjoyed it overall, so I rate it 3 out of 4 stars. The plot is well paced, not too fast or too slow, with just the right amount of twists, and it kept me fully engaged and anxious to know what would happen next. It certainly got under my skin. The ending was unpredictable and satisfying. I highly recommend this book to lovers of the genre. It is a Christian thriller so good versus evil is a key element, but the storytelling would make this accessible to most suspense readers. It is thrilling, romantic and thought-provoking! Very different from his first novel, the author gets away from historical fiction and takes the reader into the world of a serial killer with very interesting goals. That villain is scary in the sense that I felt I knew him or had met him before. He was the type of guy that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. I love when a book makes me lock my bedroom door before I go to bed! By the end of the novel I felt like I had been friends with the characters. I was rooting for some, against others and was on the edge of my seat almost the entire book.

Gordon’s second novel, is a graphic foray into the conundrum of pervasive violence in the world. Victimized by the numbing effects of poverty, drugs, sexual perversion, cultic religious misunderstandings and just plain lethal, urban ennui, Gordon’s characters are cast into a cement-mixer of murder, mayhem and heresy as they try to survive a reign of terror that threatens the city. Mr. Gordon is a social engineer of sorts, clearly believing environment shapes (or deforms) the strongest of souls into unrecognizable creations of a mysterious, if powerless, supreme being. And these characters are just as much motivated by how to stop the miscreant, as to understand why he is allowed to wreak the havoc he does in the first place. The questions raised are anthropocentric, and the definition of evil is evidentially not divinely revealed, but the simple truth is that the book unapologetically presents the reader with a hunch as to why life in America can be so scary: humanity is a severely wounded species for which only the power of love can be bravely, though tenuously, touted as the antidote to its moral depravity. Draped in a murder mystery, An Absence of Faith poses some very unsettling questions about society and humanity in general, and as its title suggests, the questions cannot be answered in a sociological vacuum. For the protagonist, a female version of Everyman, belief in God is, at best, a kind of settling on the least obnoxious of all human options in the 911 phone directory. Entertaining, engaging and disturbing, this is a book for the literary carnivore.

The reader is drawn into a world of intrigue, faith (and a lack thereof), murder, mayhem and the importance of family and love. The author successfully creates complex characters to whom each of us can relate, and forces us to question our own actions and feelings regarding our family and loved ones. The story itself is fast paced, and compulsively readable, along the same lines as many of my favorite thrillers. This book, the second by this author, is different from "The Outhouse", but no less enjoyable. I look forward to many more books by David Gordon to read in the future! A must-read.

Action Packed with Quirky Twists By Gail M Baugniet Protagonist Detective Kai is battling demons in his personal life and in his career with the Honolulu Police Department. When a teenaged girl pleads with him to learn who killed her “perfect” older sister, he faces a new set of dilemmas that could cost him his job, earn him a prison sentence, or get him killed. If the bad guys aren’t the death of him, maybe the fourteen-year-old younger sister will be. He’s not sure which is the worse option. Lots of high-octane action, several whiplash plotline twists, and a climax well worth the journey. Even the short denouement is unpredictable.This Police Procedural takes the reader around the island and to vividly-described inner island residential areas, always with specific purpose and plenty of conflict. The reason this book is such a quick read is because exciting action tends to heighten the reader’s awareness and makes the scenes fly by.Although I have visited many areas of O’ahu in the almost twenty years I’ve lived in Honolulu, the author’s familiarity with “nooks and crannies” I had no prior knowledge of heightened my enjoyment of this story. The mystery of a cold-case murder, brought home to roost in present day Hawaii, added a double dose of interest for me.

Greg Field’s fast-paced style is crisp and clean, yet poignant. His debut novel has everything you want in a crime story: fights, hot sexual tension, and an old murder crying out for justice. HPD Detective Kai and sassy 14-year-old Ka’ena each have their own inner demons to battle. Maybe that's why they're so drawn to each other. The mismatched pair butt heads, while working together to outmaneuver some powerful people and uncover crimes buried way too long. This thoroughly entertaining story takes the reader to places on O'ahu most locals would never go. I can't wait to read the next Replacement Girl story.

Complex family tale with a 16 teen year old in the middle By Tinkerbell This is a rather sad story about a young teenager who doesn't know her place in the world. Not wanted by her step-father, abused by his father and used by her Mother to further her desires in life. The family throws her to the wolves and only her attorney cares about the truth.

A young man who was sentenced to die in prison has out lived many of the individuals who out him there. It was intended for him to die in prison, but there is a GOD who sits high and looks low. The struggle and the atrocities Mr. Proctor has encounter is told in his book, "Tales From the Living Dead." Mr. Proctor deserves a second chance in life.

By Amazon Customer “Small, Irrelevant Matters” is a collection of trivial, yet highly inspiring short stories, each of one brings small, but precious things we so often fail to appreciate. The author did a wonderful job in pointing out a wide spectrum of human emotions, such as regret of not helping an old farmer; shame for not stepping up for your friend who was just saying how much he valued your friendship; admiring a musical talent of a classmate, who is thought of being a ‘goof’ and a ‘retard’…It is truly a gift in finding philosophical meanings in the most ordinary situations, and the author met the task brilliantly. It made me reflect on the choices I make every day and reflect upon what I could have done differently in the past. I love the books that make me feel, and this one certainly did. Wonderful job!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Same old story By Ms. Jenni I loved Shade of Vampire when it came out. Several of my friends were read them as well and we are all middle age adults. But it's getting old and every month there is a $3.99 book of a few chapter in the story. It is starting to feel rushed and long dragged out. I love books I am invested in, I am in the lower 20's of several other authors with long series. But this one, I am finding I wish they would just end it already and move on to something else. Out of all my friends that were reading only one still is and she said the same thing she is sort of over it. Someone is in trouble and the love of another is going to save them in the end. She could do this for the next ten years with just picking a new person to highlight every 4th book and we will be on book 120 of this series, but nothing will have really changed but the second half of the title.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another amazing book by Bella. By Baylee McCluskey A Solider of Shadows, I have to say is in my top favorite books in this series. The story flowed so perfectly that I found myself not being able to put it down. I got so captured that I forgot that I was reading. This book made me literally laugh out loud and also sob uncontrollably to a point where I had to regain my composure. Ben and River's story and relationship just make my heart happy.A lot of questions that I had with A Trail of Echos got answered in this book. Of course, in true Bella fashion, she presented me with a hundred more questions that I can't wait to be answered in the next book.I cannot recommend this series enough. All other series pale in comparison to A Shade of Vampire series. I am just so happy and in love with A Solider of Shadows. It hits me right in the feels!

By Amazon Customer I keep waiting for Bella to run out of ideas and story lines for the Shade family . . . but I’m beginning to think she has a never ending treasure trove of fascinating ideas! Holy moly! Where does she come up with this stuff?? It’s creative, exciting, and sometimes jaw-dropping! I love it!!! Ben has his work cut out for him in this crazy supernatural world. I am loving how River is fitting into this story line – a REAL girl (much like Sofia), living in the supernatural universe. River is definitely one of my favorite characters – she has charm, wit, strength, and hope. I’m not going to give away the awesomeness that is the story line for book 19, but book 20 is going to have to be epic to beat it!

Great collection of the originals By Scott Love All the Books of Wonder Oz books are fantastic recreations of the originals with all their color plates and cover art. Even the typeface and page counts are the same. If you're a collector and can't afford to drop $300 on a beat-up copy of the original, this series is a must! Little Wizard Stories also is a rare find... I've never seen an original and was delighted when Books of Wonder produced this collection.

Frank Baum's spectacularly illustrated 'Little Wizard Stories Of Oz' (1914), written for a younger audience than the books in the official Oz series, are the perfect introduction to Baum's utopist fairyland.Containing characters not only from 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' but from the second and third titles, 'The Marvelous Land Of Oz' and 'Ozma Of Oz,' the one hundred and sixty-nine page volume is composed of six short pieces, each teaming two of Baum's most popular Oz inhabitants.While the stories are delightful and comic, a subtle lesson in common sense or ethics subtly underscores each. Frank Baum first wrote these 6 short stories separately in their own volumes, with the title of each book bearing the names of two characters (see the 'Books of Oz' site). Later they were reprinted, but this time into 1 volume, with the former book titles now as chapters, shown here.I bought this book along with Roger S. Baum's "Dorothy of Oz" book (see my review) and Greg Hildebrandt's (abridged) illustrated edition of "the Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (I would like to review that).The pictures are excellent. The chapter-title images are black-and-white, and the rest of the pictures are in full-page colour, sometimes taking over two pages. I liked how the Lion was drawn walking on 2 legs and once wearing a pair glasses on a string. The following chapters (once individual book titles) are as follows:'The Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger' are tired of constantly being known for their cowardliness/hunger and therefore not being feared, so they decide to go out and make themselves be feared. But Tiger refuses to eat a baby who has lost its mother, and Lion refuses to hurt a mother who hurts herself while trying to save her baby, so they change their minds.'Little Dorothy and Toto' take a walk through Oz (despite the Wizard's disapproval of concern) and result in getting captured by the Giant Crinklink and are taken to his castle. Toto saves Dorothy and reunites with the Wizard.'Tik-Tok and the Nome King'. Tik-Tok's machinery needs a few extra springs and the Wizard suggests for him to go to the Nome King, who unfortunately is in a bad mood and accidently destroys Tik-Tok. But Kaliko, the Chief Steward, fixes Tik-Tok up. His reappearance scares the Nome King (that was funny!), but Tik-Tok explains the situation and he returns to Oz, with jewels for Princess Ozma by the Nome King.'Ozma and the Little Wizard' go through Oz making sure everything is fine, and come upon three mischievous Imps (named Olite, Udent and Ertinent) who are constantly causing trouble. The Imps take on enchanted forms and constantly attack Ozma and Wizard, until he overpowers them, with a plan to stop them from making further trouble.'Jack Pumpkinhead and the Saw-Horse' are sent by Ozma to rescue 2 children lost in a forest. They find the children, but the Squirrel King refuses to let them go. As Jack sets the children free he looses his head, but the Saw-Horse manages to get them out and the Wizard gives Jack a new pumpkinhead.'The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman' ride in a little boat along a forest stream, but Nick Chopper falls into the bottom of the sea, so Scarecrow does whatever he can to get his friend out, even with the help of some mischievous crows. Once they're out of the water, the Wizard appears to give them a helping hand.I found the story of the Lion and the Tiger very helpful because it made me realize and understand the Lion's "Cowardly" term, as many times I wondered why afterwards he couldn't be called the 'Courageous Lion'. I loved reading these adventures and was amused by the book itself because true to its "Little" title, this book is published in a size which is smaller than the other Oz Books of Wonder, AND the Wizard himself appears in almost all 6 Stories (thus the 'Little Wizard' title).However there are a few mistakes: the Lion has a red bow instead of blue and Ozma's gown changes from sleeveless to long sleeves. Also, the Tin Woodman still manages to talk even when he's rusted at the bottom of the water. It should also be noted, that since these stories were first published as 6 short books, they of course had different covers than now shown (which can also be seen in the 'Oz Project; Books of Oz' Site). I would have liked (and wished) to see the original book covers reprinted here as full-colour chapter title pages before the story begins on the next page or as the endpapers. In this book, the endpapers of the Scarecrow riding Lion's back and Tin Woodman on Tiger's back are orginially from 'the Patchwork Girl of Oz', but without the orginal background with a castle.Another good thing about this book was the Afterward saying what makes the next book, "the Patchwork Girl of Oz" so worth reading (which I would like to get soon).

About the Author

Robert Lamson is an author and senior business counselor. A former defense economist, he holds a BA in economics from Yale University and a PhD in economics from the University of Washington. He has been cofounder and senior executive of several successful technology companies, and most recently is founder of Historical Accounts Repository Partners (HARP), a 501(c)(3) educational foundation. HARP is focused on bringing to light the stirring true personal stories such as in this book. His previous publication is a nonfiction work on military spending and the economy, Beyond Guns and Butter, coauthored with Glenn Pascall.

Married for fifty years, Lamson has two daughters and five grandchildren and lives in Seattle, Washington.

By Amazon Customer I became interested in this book after recent headlines spoke of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. I opened the book on a recent vacation and could hardly put it down. It's a history lesson, love story, and wartime drama combined with small doses of humor (needed to offset the sometimes very dark details of the cruelty of man). A great read!!!

A harrowing first-person account of surviving the Armenian genocide in Turkey during WWI By Jeffrey Powel I was encouraged to read this book, by the book’s author and family friend, Robert Lamson following a chance meeting outside of the country in a small village in Mexico where he was vacationing with his wife. He was, at that time, weeks from publishing an historical novel detailing the oppression and genocide of Armenians in Turkey from the perspective of his great uncle, Souren Tashjian, who had narrowly escaped imprisonment and death on several occasions during a number of critical years from his late teens to his early twenties in WWI ravaged Turkey..The author wove a story around the detailed notes kept by his great uncle from a combination of facts and literary license to create a first person account of these experiences during the war. This book is informative, entertaining, well written, and tells a great, albeit frightening, story. The author did a fantastic job of bringing to life both his great uncle’s ordeal and the horrible choices that are born out of the exigencies of war. I was left with a feeling that there often may not be Hollywood-type heroes when survival is at stake. The central figure of the book, Souren, clearly faced a Hobson's choice in multiple instances throughout his ordeal. Some, I'm sure, would consider him to have collaborated with the enemy because in so many instances his available choices ranged from what amounted to suicidal resistance, turning a blind eye on the predicament of others (Armenia and Turkish nationals, alike), or an acceptance of his perceived powerlessness and taking whatever compromises were necessary for survival. In our culture we think of Stallone-like characters, armed with Rambo-esque weaponry able to mount single-handled assaults against overwhelming odds, or Jason Bourne assassins with superhuman skills at both stealth and targeted take downs who possess a superhuman capacity to slip out from the grasp of his enemies. Souren Tashjian was not superhuman nor a one man army or a stealth assassin. He was much more victim than victimizer but his guilt must have been enormous and likely reduced only a little by his limited opportunities for resistance or to protect his family and friends from the horrors of war. I am so thankful that I never had to live through something like that or face those kinds of choices. I doubt I would have had the intellect and cunning to be able to pull off such duplicity without discovery. The author did a sensitive job of telling his great uncle’s story, sifting through and assimilating what must have been a mountainous amount of detail from his notes, and then pulling it all together to give us a compassionate story that keeps him and those horrible times alive for future generations.

I loved the technical info and was soon transported back to the days of rallying with the likes of Paddy Hopkirk etc.I think the flow of the story could have been improved by stronger editing. Also, in my opinion, at times is that there is too much personal information, but, as this is essentially a "boys book", I expect the author's sexual exploits will by applauded by the boy racers of yesteryear.Having said this, I thoroughly enjoyed MG's The Mini and Me.

I feel it was a waste of the $29 By Marylin B Really was done in a very average was , I only gained one insight from it, I felt a lot more than shooting street people would be involved. I do all my photography underwater which is what this camera was made for and the author obviously has no knowledge of. I feel it was a waste of the $29.00.

The information is not presented well, no index for example, his advice is to use off brand spare batteries. In my experience they have a much shorter life span than the camera brand. The photo's are garish, way over saturated. Compare Frankel's TG-4 manual to Young,s Mastering the E-M1 manual. Frankel's is 112 pages long, half of which are white space, and the other half doesn't say much. Young's book is loaded with info, hundreds of photos, and a terrific index.
