I will attempt not to post any spoilers, but with this author's writing that may be hard if not impossible!This author left us hanging in book 1 with a huge cliff hanger which left us waiting with baited breath for the next installment. Well let me say she did not disappoint me and hopefully you once you purchase book 1 and 2.You get to see the Black Rose come to accept her role in life as a strong willed, intelligent young lady as she is kidnapped with nothing but a few silver hair pieces. She will come alive as if a breathing living person as you read on.You will be able to taste, feel and get deeply into this author's writing as you read the story that takes you from earth as you know it to hell and back. You will be transported into this book as none other has done so. It is one kick ass book that will have you on the edge of your sleep and losing sleep as you read it.It is a part of the story but in its own right it is the lenght of a full novel. It took me 2 days to read it even as I was reading as fast as I could and staying up late and getting up early. I even slept with my kindle to save time to get back to the story! It is an absolutely GREAT read!

A.K. Michaels has dazzled us with yet another spectacular series and what a sparkler it is! Torment and Treachery is the second release in her brand new series, The Black Rose Chronicles and Ava has totally rocked my world - again! Please be forewarned, this release is part of an ongoing series and is NOT a standalone read. So, if you haven't read Book One, Deceit and Lies, please STOP here. Now we have that out of the way, let's talk some specifics. The book is exciting, unique, interesting and well crafted. It grabbed my attention right out of the gate and held my interest from the first page till the last. The dialogue is smart, well executed and flows effortlessly. The narrative is exceptionally well written in the third person with multiple points of view - five and counting. Most authors stick with one or two if they're feeling adventurous but three or more is a lot of work, especially if it's done well and Ava does it without missing a beat! I find that it not only adds to depth and complexity of the story but to a greater understanding of the characters as well. And speaking of the characters, they are quite simply magnificent. I would describe them as fascinating, captivating, intriguing, well developed and engaging. And did I say sexy? No? Well, they are sexy as sin. Heck, even the villain is hot - and I do mean that quite literally since he is a demon after all. But all joking aside, the characters literally explode from the pages, grab your attention, capture your heart and hold you prisoner from beginning to end. Michaels skillfully combines these elements into a superbly crafted paranormal romance filled to the brim with danger, drama, adventure, suspense, deceit, heartbreak, passion and romance. And there's also a small smattering of humor included as well for a little comic relief. So, what didn't I like about this book? Not a darn thing! I loved it!Book One: Deceit and LiesMichaels establishes the premise for the entire series in Book One. Our story begins with Rose Marie O'Connell, a wolf/witch hybrid, living in a future dystopian world that has been devastated and ravaged by a war between the species. Luxuries and prosperity no longer exist and supernatural beings roam freely without fear. Very few places have any sort of law enforcement and crime, chaos and destruction reign over most of the world where men can be anything from a Wolf to a Fallen Angel with every species in between - except witches. Witches have been hunted to near extinction and the only witch other than her now deceased mother Rose has ever met is Seth, her protector, mentor, savior and lover. Seth, a friend of her father, took her into his home when she was only eight and gave her shelter, guidance, safety and love for the last twenty years. But he has also given her another gift - he has trained her to defend herself and now she has become a legendary, hard-as-nails, deadly assassin known as "The Black Rose" who is so successful that she now can name her own price for a job. Rose works mostly for The Council, a group based in Washington in what used to be the White House consisting of members of almost every species who attempt to maintain some order. Unfortunately, with few resources there is little they can do other than the elimination of the occasional bad guy which is where Rose comes into play. Rose, however, is very selective when choosing her assignments. She will only accept a contract for someone that she has vetted herself and determined to be guilty of the crimes for which he has been accused. Once she accepts a job, there is no reprieve and she dispatches them to their death swiftly and without remorse. But Rose walks a very fine line of life and death. She is half witch which she must keep concealed at all times. If her secret were ever to be revealed, she would be in danger of being the one who is hunted - by the Witch Hunters, the same group who murdered her Mother and the reason she can have no contact with her father, Wolf-Shifter Brendan O'Connell. Rose lives a lonely existence with Seth being the only man she trusts and loves. But it's never enough to fill the emptiness inside her heart and soul. She always feels desperate to find something or someone else - a release from her prison of control. But little does Rose know that fate has much in store for "The Black Rose". She has a destiny to fulfill; the future of humanity and the peace of the world may very well fall on her small shoulders. Unfortunately for Rose, there are forces in play that seek to stop and destroy her because of a misinterpreted prophecy. There are two other men involved in Rose's life and her future. The first is Vampire Cassius Allarde, the newly elected High Duke and new leader of the Vampires who wishes to restore peace, order and prosperity to not only the Vampire race but to every species across the world as well. The second is the Demon Basilius who is Head of the Council. His only goals are power and prosperity for himself ensuring his position as leader of the world. Unfortunately, in order for Basilius to accomplish his objective, he must destroy the one man standing in his way, Cassius Allarde. And this is where Rose enters the life of these two powerful adversaries. Basilius contracts Rose to kill Cassius. What? But he's a good guy, isn't he? Nonetheless, he wants him dead but he can't afford to do it himself and certainly not under the purview of The Council. Basilius lies to Rose about Cassius' true intentions and persuades her to accept the job but Basilius had not anticipated Rose's determination to learn the truth and the unfortunate unfolding of certain events that allow Rose to not only meet her handsome target but get to know him as well - intimately. Huh? Oh yes! But when Rose is mortally wounded in an attack by a demon, Cassius saves her life and nurses her back to health and they both soon realize they have feelings for each other and it's so much more than simple lust. Cassius and Rose both begin to understand the reason for their attraction and how it will affect both their lives. But before they can publicly declare their love and make plans for their future, Rose is not only abducted by Basilius, she's actually snatched away while Cassius helplessly watches. Oh no! Oh yes! Oh my!The story continues in Book Two: Torment and TreacheryThe story continues and picks up immediately following Rose's abduction and her arrival in the demon realm. Basilius revels in his power and is determined to make Rose pay for her betrayal. She not only failed to carry out her mission of killing Cassius, but has fallen in love with his enemy and the one man who can prevent his rise to power in the human realm. Basilius has kidnapped Rose right out from under Cassius' nose and transported her to the demon realm aka Hell where he is holding her prisoner. The demon realm is full of the worst kind of demons imaginable, and where each hour that passes in the human realm is the equivalent to a week in the demon realm. Huh? Oh my! Cassius, the new King of the Vampires and Rose's fated mate, has never felt so helpless in his entire long life. As he stood helplessly, he watched Basilius steal his true love, Rose, and rip her away from him. Cassius along with Rose's wolf shifter father Brendan, her mentor and former lover Seth, Kuan the Chinese mystic who is apparently also a Chinese god, and Cassius' friends and fellow vampires, Valentine and Valeria have mounted a rescue mission to recover Rose from the power hungry Basilius. Rose knows in her heart that Cassius will move heaven and hell to save her but because of the time difference, it looks like Rose will need all her strength, skill and magic if she wants to survive and somehow find a way to escape the torture, torment and treachery Basilius has planned for her. If she can only hold out until the cavalry arrives, she just may stand a chance of escaping her fate in the bowels of hell. But will Cassius, Seth, Brendan, Valentine, Valeria and Kuan arrive in time to save her from the King of Hell??? We'll see!!! Now three men desire Rose but all for different reasons. Two men care deeply for Rose but only one can have her completely. While one desires her heart, love and acceptance, another desires her happiness, love and safety. Unfortunately, the third desires only her surrender, torture and death. But what fate awaits Rose and how will it affect the future of the world? Rose is faced with astonishing changes which spark the beginning of a mysterious forgotten prophecy and as Rose soon discovers, they not only affect her but all living and undead creatures. Much to her dismay, Rose must accept the fact that the fate of the entire world may very well rest upon her small shoulders. Oh my! No spoilers from me but I will say this...Beautiful, deadly Wolf/Witch hybrid assassin-check! Handsome, sexy Vampire-check! Handsome male Witch protector and savior-check! Sadistic, maniacal Demon who just happens to be the King of Hell-check! Vampires, Demons, Wolves, Witches, Fairies, Witch Hunters and a Chinese God-check! Danger, death, drama, destruction, suspense, adventure, a ravaged dystopian world, immoral depraved villains and evil machinations galore-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, explosive chemistry, heartbreaking angst, a large helping of romance and some steamy dreamy sex-you bet! That and a whole lot more! Whew! What a mouthful! A must read series By sue ward After the cliffhanger at the end of book one I had high expectations for how the story would continue in book 2 and I wasn't disappointed.The story picks up from where book 1 finished and its an adrenaline rush from the off.Rose's life has quite literally gone to Hell. With the Demons Basillis and Razor both after her blood and determined to make her suffer their own particular forms of abuse, Rose is in a race against time if she's to survive and fulfil the prophesy.Can Brendan, Seth and Cassius find her in time ? With the help of a God maybe ! With an as yet unknown traitor in their midst, you can bet the drama, excitement and danger is far from over.This is a well thought out and well written story set in a dystopian world with an array of interesting and intriguing characters that makes for an exceptional read. I rarely re-read a book but this is one that I could again and again.This book doesn't end in a cliff hanger 'phew' not sure I could cope with another ending like book 1 but it will leave you waiting eagerly for the next instalment.
