6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. How Very True By dean Couldn't put it down!Joseph Kenny (Joe to one or two people) has come up with a superb piece of participant observation. Like Mr Kenny, I followed a similar path and his words reverberated down the years for me.The picture he paints of the volunteers, the kibbutz members and the chickens(!) is so very true. Ex Kibbutz volunteers will love this book the rest of the population will have a crystal clear image of a unique social experiment in a unique country.Can't wait for 'Kibbutz - Part II' to hit the shelves/e-reader.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I loved it! By Jean Grainger I read this book having never been to a kibbutz or indeed ever been to Israel. It is a wonderfully descriptive memoir capturing the innocence and sense of adventure of a young Irish man searching for something different to Dublin of the early nineties. It effortlessly combines great humour with some truly poignant moments. It is happily lacking in a political agenda which I found refreshing as often books about such troubled areas of the world are firmly couched in bias on one side or the other. Kenny simply and effectively informs the reader about the political context only as far as is necessary for understanding. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Israel: Not for Sissies By tzefirah To set the scene, Joseph Kenny was a young man living in his home town outside of Dublin, Ireland. Everything looked eerily familiar, and he saw nothing but the same spanning before him. He decided that travel was just the thing, so he packed up his brother's army duffel bag and hit the airways. He'd seen a documentary on television about life on an Israeli kibbutz (communal settlement), and made that his ultimate travel goal.Joseph's first two months were spent in France. At first I didn't get why this was included, but life in France adds to the stark contrast of life on a kibbutz. Joseph ends up on a kibbutz in the Negev, the most stark and isolated part of Israel. With no exposure to the Jewish faith or any Hebrew, this Irish lapsed Catholic is definitely in a strange land.Life on a kibbutz is not for sissies. The work is hard and endless, and the future for young Israelis is 3-4 years in the Israeli army. The food is extremely healthy, but monotonous, and communal living can definitely have its drawbacks. Despite all this, Joseph feels something compelling about life in Sederet. This strange compulsion becomes firmly established when he falls in love with a young Israeli girl. Joseph hints that this relationship continues into the future.Joseph Kenny's prose is brilliant. It's worth reading this book just to get acquainted with his writing.I would love a continuation of this story.
