The story is about the growth of a little boy who was introduced to the streets and sex at a very early age. His mother and grandfather were from the South. They were poor financially but rich with love. His mother instilled in him and his siblings to take care of one another. He was very close to his siblings. They took good care of him. At an early age, he was left by his siblings in Indiana with their grandfather, while they were taken to New York by their mother. He survived his environment for three years before he was reunited with his siblings in New York. He looked up to his oldest brother, who guided and taught him that school and hard work can lead them to a better way of life. His brother was an excellent role model. They both worked hard to help their family in any way they could. After he finished college, he joined his older brother in the New York City Department of Correction. They both became ranking officers and retired after twenty years of service. He grew into a strong, positive black man who led his family to that better way of life.

Tucker Very interesting biography of a man who took you through his life from early childhood to present day. The author's story entails the trials and tribulations that any reader can probably relate to or be able to relate the author's life experience's to someone else's life experience. The author was very open about his life and shows you how he made it in life with the guidance and strength of an older brother and two older sisters. The author tells you how his family struggled financially and how he became separated from his older siblings because of the financial strain on his single mother having to leave him behind to be cared for by other relatives for a few years at the age of six. The author talks about the devastation of his mother's passing during his teen years and how holding onto family values given them by their mother gave his older siblings the strength to keep the family together. The book is dedicated to the legacy and memory of his recently late older brother who was instrumental in his life and present day successful lifestyle.

What I liked most were those nostalgic moments, having grown up during the same era as the author. He also gives an insightful description of the typical life of a Correction Officer behind Rikers Island prison gates, so if you are looking for a quick and interesting read, this book is a good choice. Thanks for taking us on your journey James G. Houston and I wish you continued success.

I am from the South and raised in a home with a matriarch, so I could relate to the strong moral foundation that was instilled in the writer. As his story continued to unfold throughout his puberty, again, I was able to relate. The author's ability to recount the many events that happen in one's life was amazing to me. It was if he knew that one day he was going to tell his story to the world and had good notes but in actuality it was just his keen memory. I felt the hurt, pain and loss when his mother and brother died because I, too, formed a relationship with them as he described what they were like as individuals. It was indeed interesting to read how his life events unfolded and how he "grew to be a man". This is a book that teaches or rather shares the lessons that he was taught. It is that, that makes the book valuable for anyone to read, especially a young man growing up today. Cudos....Mr. Houston! You did a fine job.

I seldom read love stories, however, I was referred to this book by a friend and really enjoyed the suspense involved with the time pressured process that was involved with selecting a wife in India to bring back to America in the 1960's. The pressures on all involved, and the how the decision's were made by both parties to the eventual marriage, were all new insights for me into India culture and customs. The book gains momentum as you read through the chapters and toward the end you can't put it down as emotions go sky high and you just need to know how it will end. I am confident you will enjoy this book's growing suspense and picturesque details.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting and informative. Highly recommended. By Dean McNeal I enjoyed this book very much. It was especially interesting to me because I know people whose families originated in India and I learned so much about their culture and customs. The foods mentioned in the story were especially interesting to me and since then I have had the opportunity to sample some of these and have found that I like Indian food more than I thought I might. The author did a good job of including foods, style of clothing, etc. yet keep you very interested in the outcome at the end of the book. I think you would find that it is a book you would really enjoy!

In a time long since forgotten by human eyes and lost tomes, there once existed an untamed land. A place where wickedness and righteousness were constantly at war. A world of great beasts and tiny creatures seething with magic. Starkenshire. Join Abigail McFaoil on her quest as she battles against terrible foes, makes precious friends, and meets creatures beyond imagination. Fairy Blood takes the reader into the untamed land of Starkenshire. Abigail McFaoil is a young woman who shares the sacred heritage of the pixies; hence an outcast in both societies. When destiny calls upon her to slay one of the world's great evils, she ventures forward to smite a terrible villain. Baron Charles Byron. But is she setting her sights too high in order to impress her father and the rest of her clan? During her journey, she is joined by four unlikely traveling companions. Garren, rogue member of the greatwolf tribe. He has been by her side since going into exile and has become an invaluable friend. Peter Cromwell, a shy and lanky alchemist who would like nothing better than to be left alone for the rest of his mortal existence. But fate has other, less reserved plans for him. Daphne, a firebrand pixie and Abigail's aunt. After reluctantly making a promise to her sister to aid the young woman on her quest, she comes to regret this decision immensely. For the most part. And finally, Twig, a lovably bumbling brown bear. After being both enchanted and gifted with speech by Daphne, Twig now serves as Abigail's loyal steed for the duration of their journey. Together with her new traveling companions, Abigail will embark on a journey of the unexpected. Self-discovery.

I really like the way the author explains why things are the way the are. She doesn't leave you wondering why Garren was thrown out by his people. You wonder why I only gave it a 3, its because it seems like the story isn't finished. Abigail doesn't finish her quest, what is the meaning of what the assassin's words he put on Garren. It makes you think that it is a series, but there is nothing in the book or online indicating it. Where is the rest of the story? I hope the author keeps writing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book deserves a 10! By Tina Cabot I absolutely loved this book, and cannot wait for the next one in line to be released! There was strong character development here, and the way the author brought them all together for one big adventure.. I love books like that. Unlikely friends because of the circumstances, always a good read, especially combining the so many different personality traits and bringing them together. I also appreciate that there are many different emotions portrayed in this first installment, and that there are fighting scenes with dark twists and a deep plot. I would give this book A 10 if I could!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An empowering read! By Tanya H. Absolutely adored this story! *-* Abigail goes through many of the same sorts of emotions many of us do in our younger years. I especially loved Twig and Peter though. This story is a great read with many lovable and enduring characters. A must read for anyone looking for something unique and exciting! Can't wait for the next installment in the series!!!!!

After defeating my old friend Nik, I now have a teacher, but first I have to figure out how to animate him and then I can try to convince him to teach me how to defeat his master. As if that wasn’t impossible enough, the Trelking himself crosses the Threshold and demands that I recover a dangerous shardstone box, one that had been protected by my father. If I don’t, I know what steps the Trelking will take, especially now that he knows about Devan and I. But what can be so important for the Trelking to risk making the crossing? Something else has crossed the Threshold while the Trelking held it open that places the city in incredible danger. Now I have to protect Conlin from magical attack once again. Only this time, I suspect the Trelking is the one attacking the city.

I had to wonder if Mr. Holmberg was an artist the way he is able to describe the magic used in this series. The characters have depth, the story line moves quickly, but with mysteries that slowly reveal throughout the series and keep you guessing. It's almost like he slowly puts out pieces of the puzzle and gives you time to work on it.

The world Corus has been redesigned to become the new home of a superior race from a distant world whose very life depends on drawing sustenance from the biological life force of a planet. Meanwhile their plans are supervised by a staff of Alectors who in effect rule the world. The Alectors alone have access to the huge, flying pteridons they have bred and the superior weapons that underpin their psychic talents.

The time is now fast approaching for the transfer of the whole population from the old world, nearly bled dry of life force, to Corus. But neither the Alectors (who will be reduced in status when the real powers arrive) nor the local humans (who seem destined to become no more than cattle, though they know nothing of this) are ready. And the mysterious Ancient Ones, the true natives of Corus and assumed to have died out in eons past, still survive, and they have their own powers. The situation builds toward an explosive climax.

24 of 27 people found the following review helpful. More Like Hobson's Choice By James D. DeWitt I'm not sure what to make of Modesitt. On the one hand, he invents brilliantly imagined worlds. Corus, the setting for this tale, is his best yet. His battle scenes are very well written. But in his trilogies, the second volume has consistently been the weakest. He really only has one plot, although his variations on that basic plot can be interesting. And he remains purely incapable of writing a love scene."Cadmian's Choice" is the second novel in this extended prequel to the previously written Corean Trilogy ("Legacies," "Darknesses" and "Scepters"). It's mostly a political story. Modesitt is great at inventing complex political situations, and concealing the true motives of the characters, but he's not so hot at keeping it all interesting. The story drags until the final third, when Dainyl - the alien Alector - and Mykel - the human but Talented Cadmian soldier - finally get into battle. Fantasy writers need to understand that any time they devote more than a sentence to characters' clothing the inevitable comparisons to Robert Jordan will start. We already know Alectors wear shimmersilk. And I don't think the first thing Mykel noticed on regaining consciousness was the color of his girl's outfit. The second volume of a trilogy is always hard to make compelling. It's a transition between the introduction in the first volume and the conclusion in the third. In a prequel, where you know how it is eventually going to turn out, it's even harder. There's a certain amount of interest in watching characters develop, but that can be thin across 768 pages.A Cadmian's Choice, if I understand the story, is getting an apparent enemy to voluntarily accept a curse. Mykel, who may or may not be a Dagger of the Ancients, confronts such a choice. You, as the reader, face a Hobson's Choice. Modesitt's third volumes in his trilogies are usually his best. If you want to understand the events in that future third book, you'll have to make your way through this one. This middle volume isn't bad; it's just not very good. It's not up to Modesitt's usual standards and it is considerably below his best work.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not his best work By Sam Archer I love all books by L.E. Modesitt. However, this book is very slow. Not much happens for the first 250pages. Just a lot of setup and slow character development. The only major action happens at the very end and the entire plot of the series is only slightly advanced.I would still buy it because I like the series but you may be a bit dissapointed.

Derivative of all his prior writing, not necessarily a bad thing By Jason Jarvis Reading a Modesitt book is like having a really good hamburger at a restaurant. It's not gourmet food. You feel like you could make it yourself at home but it's too much trouble. You've had a dozen of them in the last year but you aren't sick of them. Sometimes they are a little tastier than others, but generally, you get what you pay for.I feel like that with Modesitt, and that's not a criticism. I really like hamburgers. He is so formula in his writing it's almost like you could write the plot outline just from looking at the cover picture:Male character is up-and-coming minor officer, who climbs the ranks after being smarter and more powerful than his superiors believe, and on the way, is a little unorthodox but ultimately does nothing surprising. Along the way, you get to enjoy nice desciptions of politics, magic, or some sort of craftmaking (whether sheep shearing or wood working), and the entire novel ends in a too-quick rush of action in the last twenty pages that makes you wish the book had a little more action earlier and a little less towards the end. That formula in mind, this book deviates little. But what makes Modesitt work, and this book in particular, is that his writing is just very....readable. I can't tell you how much I have wanted to enjoy other authors but found the writing too dense (Thomas Covenant series) or too simplistic (David Eddings comes to mind). Sometimes the writing is just bad (a lot of D&D RPG novels are like that). A really good writer can make a technical manual about editing database structure readable (I'm not saying interesting, I'm saying readable). Modesitt is a really good writer.I won't go over the plot. Other people have. I found it interesting and fun, though hard to follow at times with the various political intrigue and the fact that the names are all so similar among the various players and their locations/interests undefined enough that it's impossible to keep track. But I still enjoyed it.It's the middle of what's really a six book series with the first three set thousands of years after the last three. But it's a fun new world that isn't dominated by discussions of law and chaos, so I've enjoyed it.My suggestion: If you like Modesitt there's no reason you won't like this book. If you don't like him, don't bother. If you don't know him, start with the Magic of Recluse. If you can't put that book down, jump into this new world head first.

The Diary of a 100 Year Old Amused Senior, by Estelle Craig

About the Author I have had a very interesting and a very exciting life. I have three great children, numerous grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. There are a number of things I would have changed in my life, but how can one know what the best choice is until it's over? Rosalind Russell said in the film Auntie Mame, "Life is a banquet and some poor souls out there are starving to death" I have dined well at the banquet. I am not hungry at all.

When Gianforte brings her recollections to the page, you will step right into a neighborhood of the 1950's and 1960's situated along a Midwestern leafy avenue. You will see friendly neighbors visiting on front porches and children riding by on bicycles. You will open the oval-glass front door of one house in particular, a white Dutch colonial, to meet its three residents. There, two serious, older parents display the deepest love for their young daughter even as they wrestle with their own inevitable idiosyncrasies and resistance to change. Through that daughter's sentimental memoir, you will come to love this little family and to admire the values that she distills in gentle style.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great memories, in a nicer time. By midwest gal This sweet book is written by a high school friend who has been writing stories for my home town newspaper for years about growing up in Racine Wisconsin. The book is composite of her memories, which will more than likely bring back memories for anyone, anywhere who reads it. It's exciting to know someone who's talent for story telling is now in book form. You won't be disappointed!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Read and a Flood of Memories from Growing up in the 50's and 60's By David A wonderful read! Carol brought a flood of memories back to me about living and growing up in Racine back in the 50's and 60's. I really found it difficult to put the book down and kept wishing the end would never come. Well the book ends but the memories flow on. Thanks Carol for sharing this part of your life.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved this memoir because it returned me to my roots ... By Julie A. Andersen I loved this memoir because it returned me to my roots and to wonderful memories of my childhood in Racine, Wisconsin. Carol's ability to bring back the magic of spending my childhood on Carlisle Avenue was exceptionally well done, and many of the places I remembered so well vividly returned to my doorsteps which now exist in Colorado. Several family members now have the memoir in their hands and they, too, now have a chance to walk down the beauty and the uniqueness of the Carlisle Avenue of the 50's and the 60's. Thank you, Carol, for your beautifully penned memoir that belongs to many of us. Your gift remains deeply etched in the hearts of our youth.

The inner wharf of American Samoa is a contributing factor to world trade and infrastructure from the United States to other countries around the world and the neighbor islands. The wharf relies on a light which harbors ships in to the direct seaway routes to anchor in the wharf for business, travel and tourism. This light is the Molioleava (Harbor Light) standing atop the hill of the village of Laulii, American Samoa. The author is from the village of Laulii, and is from the family who owns the land lease-contracted by departments of the public sectors of American Samoa and medium organizations. Molioleava is the home to the author's ancestors' burial grounds; its peaking cape point is also home to telecommunication, medium satellites and television services within the Territory of American Samoa. Great hobby to write By Charis Fereti-Pouesi Great hobby to write, but even its an even better subject to start off by telling the world where you're from! God bless your talent, and I hope you will continue to write. Looking forward to the Lovefolds of Our Upbringing!

I've heard so many ghost stories about this place and have only recently ventured up that hill - to be greeted by those eerie noises the wind makes. Luckily, we were in a good sized church group. We went to lay a church member to rest. It is just as beautiful and spooky as described by the author in her book! And the trek up the hill is a cardio workout. Thank you, Lynn, for sharing this part of your family's legacy with us. Many have wondered about the Molioleava...or is it wandered about the Molioleava? Molioleava, by Lynn Alaimalo

Welcome to the Candidacy. Where dreams go to die. Twenty-year-old Ryiah is a black mage of Combat, but she is not the Black Mage. Yet. She’s had her eyes on the legendary robe for as long as she can remember, and in just one year she will have a chance at her country’s prestigious –and only- tourney for mages... Too bad she is going up against a certain non-heir. The one person she has yet to beat. Meanwhile Ry has a year to prove herself in her new role as a war mage and the prince’s betrothed. Neither is quite what she expected and complications arise on both fronts. War is on the horizon, and with so many enemies the kingdom of Jerar’s fate is more than ever at risk. The Candidacy finally arrives, but it’s only the beginning. Nothing can prepare her for what comes next.

Candidate (The Black Mage Book 3), by Rachel E. Carter

Review Praise for Rachel E. Carter's bestselling The Black Mage series: "It takes a lot for me to truly fall in love with a book. I think I maybe do this once or twice a year. This is one of those times. I found a new fantasy story that sucked me in (completely). Imagine my surprise that it was YA too. Y'all know me. Normally, I go for the NA and above reads. But this series...it just has that something "extra". That extra punch that drags you in and won't let go. I hope you give it a try. It's THAT good." - Scarlett Dawn, NYT & USA Today bestselling author of Forever Evermore "A magical academy where potential mages train and study all things magic, a love-hate relationship with an arrogant prince, and a determined and unyielding female heroine? Sign me up." - Raisa Santos - TheFandom.Net "Falling somewhere between the magic of Hogwarts and the excitement of Hunger Games, this story resides in the niche rather nicely!" - Margaret Faria - InD'Tale Magazine "This has undoubtedly become one of my favorite YA fantasy series. Hands down, no competition." -Melissa, EverSoMela, top Goodreads reviewer "Rachel E. Carter has a definite fan in me forever, keep doing what you're doing Rachel because you write an amazing story!" -Emmeline, The Book Herald, top Amazon reviewer

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. or my review would have seemed like 10 year old fan-girl gushing By hetalp I really wanted to write this review the moment after I finished it, but I was so overwhelmed I had to let myself think about it for a couple days, or my review would have seemed like 10 year old fan-girl gushing. This is by far the best book in the series thus far. Ryiah is now Darren's betrothed. But, before they get married, she wants to get away from the castle and work for Commander Nyx in the north. She and Darren separate for a while, but are brought together again by the Heir's marriage plans, mutiny, love, rebellion...just a cornucopia of problems, really. Let's not forget the pending Candidacy where Ryiah, Darren, and others will fight for the esteemed position of the Black Mage.Candidate really gave us a good look at who Darren was and how he got to be the person he was today. It's not secret that though Darren and Ryiah love each other, they are stubborn and fight like there is no tomorrow. This book gives some back story that helps Ryiah and Darren's relationship mature.Candidate is also by far the best written book by Carter, in my opinion. Carter as a writer has REALLLY grown and it is SO CLEAR in this book. We have watched Ryiah, Darren, and the others go from clueless students-to apprentices-to full fledged mages. Their emotions and personalities grow so much. I can't even say anything or I risk ruining the story, so just trust me and read it. You'll see!Other things you will find in this book: love, betrayal, and loneiness. I was not expecting the roller coaster of emotions that was Candidate, so I'm telling you now, be prepared. I suggest keeping a tissue box and a nice hot cup of tea by your side. Also maybe a fan for those steamy moments (thank you Rachel.)If this had been a hard copy and not on my kindle, I would have thrown my book across the room and screamed at the ending in frustration and agony. What this book teaches us is that life isn't fair. That least scene at the end which i was looking forward to SO MUCH, was marred by LIFE BEING TERRIBLY UNFAIR. Like really though, IT'S NOT FAIR. The crap Ryiah goes through in the last 30% of the book will break your heart. My heart already breaks for Ryiah in the next book and it hasn't even come out.All I can say is I am willing to build a temple in Rachel's honor and possibly sacrifice some puppies if it gets Rachel Carter to write faster. I will start saving up tissue boxes right now, because if The Last Stand is anything like The Candidate, one box will not be enough.

Everything I could have asked for By Anna (Enchanted by YA) ***I received the eBook free as a review copy from the author in exchange for an honest review***Wow. Rachel as done it again! Just thinking about this book makes me grin, and also want to throttle something – an unusual combination but you’ll understand once you’ve read it (which you totally should. And soon, because I need to fangirl with someone okay? Okay)There’s so much to say about this book and so much I can’t say for fear of spoiling, so I’ll start with the fact that everything has stepped up a level. The world, the character depth, the “oh my god that did not just happen” moments all got a whole lot greater and I couldn’t be happier about it. As a reader I often go into books (particularly sequels) excited as well as nervous but I found that I was only excited (jumping up and down excited no less) because I knew that even if the author threw in hundreds of curveballs and killed off characters, I’d still thoroughly enjoy it. And she did. And I did.One of the biggest surprises for me was the amount of time spent away from my beloved Darren (granted it’s probable that I would have wanted more scenes even if we saw him every other page…) This isn’t a “romance” series and so their relationship didn’t take centre stage, which made me treasure those moments even more; while also opening the story to many different directions. In this instalment tensions are rising throughout the world, revealing secrets and characteristics people would prefer to be kept quiet. True colours are starting to come through… My non-spoiler low down of characters: love bad-ass female protagonist, want to marry 1 prince and kill the other, a certain king is full of ****, the kind best friend is someone everyone should have in their life, MC’s parents break my heart, the brothers… Yet to be decided. What it comes down to is the fact that this book has everything I could have asked for, so if you’re like me and love an epic fantasy series with a kick-ass heroine, momentous plot, complex characters and enough action/romance to be satisfying, picking it up is a no-brainer.Posted on: http://enchantedbyya.blogspot.co.uk/

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Oh my the betrayal and tears By Kindle Customer This book encompasses blood, betrayal, hardship and death. All of which was heartbreaking, causing tears to fall from my face. Many hard answers were found, resulting in death and more betrayal. Rhy and Darren have a hard battle ahead, and where they end up, is anyone's guess. This was the best book in the series by far, and I am counting the days until the next book. I am still reeling from what has occurred, it definitely, was not anticipated.

Review "The continuation of the prequel series was just fantastic. Part two of the prequel series by Cheryl S. Mackey is far better than the first half in my opinion. Based on the fact that it made me feel more. it played on so many emotions and I had to go and buy the The Unknown Sun right away, which is the first book in The Destiny series, which the Immortals are the prequels to.The author continues to share the quests of her characters in such a way that I can see the movie playing out in my mind. I really hope this series becomes popular, just so I can see the movie it should be. " -Rising Indies United

By Twisted Book Curmudgeon This is a great young adult novel and I give it five plus stars. After having read the first book, I couldn't wait to read it and I was not disappointed. In fact, I devoured this romantic action packed tale in one night, leaving me with blurry eyes the next morning. I rushed to review it, so others can enjoy it too.As I have said before, this author is a very vivid story teller. Every page drips with action and mystery. Her use of flashbacks and inference make for an intriguing sophisticated story that is interesting to all ages on many levels. As the saga continues the heroes must get a map to find a forgotten city and save the world. What’s not to love about a quest with lots of action and even romance? The characters are complex and real which is so enjoyable. The romance is not sappy, or unrealistic. The strong women and the respectable men and the theme of working together to solve problem an excellent choice for a young reader.Ermanthe the fiery girl with abilities to help light the world and the hunky Earthlanders along with a lithe elf healer make a formidable force as they travel to find this map that so many want. Good people and bad people are all after this map and infamous city. The heroes meet old friends, lovers and make new one in this journey through the desert but who to trust, who to love and who to kill? Are the questions they must solve while battling to gain control of everything including their pasts. The demons they battle are internal as well as external which makes for very complex characters that this reader wants to continue learning about.

Allies & Enemies By Merissa (Archaeolibrarian) The Immortals is a prequel trilogy, placing events and characters that are mentioned or appear in another series by Cheryl Mackey, the first book of which is called The Unknown Sun and is available now.Allies and Enemies starts with our Four once again on the search for something. This time it is a map, but they need to find a map to find the map! Nothing is easy or straightforward for these four. Although Ivo, Jaeger, Jadeth and Emaranthe know and work well together, they are joined by a couple that could help or hinder them.Full of action and enough twists and turns to keep everyone happy, this is a fast-paced Fantasy. Full of imagination and leading nicely to the next book. Definitely recommended.* I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review. *MerissaArchaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!
