Nikolai: I have been a contract killer since I was a boy. For years I savored the fear caused by my name, the trembling at the sight of my tattoos. If you saw my eyes, it was the last vision you'd have. With her, I am the mark and I am ready to lie down and let her capture me. Opening my small, scarred heart to her brings out my enemies. I will carry out one last hit, but if they hurt her, I will bring the world down around their ears. Daisy: I've been sheltered from the outside world all my life. Home-schooled and farm-raised, I'm so naive that my best friend calls me Pollyanna. I like to believe the best about people. Nikolai is part of this new life, and he's terrifying to me. Not because his eyes are cold or my friend warns me away from him, but because he's the only man who has ever seen the real me beneath the awkwardness. With him, my heart is at risk . . . and also, my life. Contains mature themes.

Nikolai lived on the streets as a child, taken in by a violent gang and trained to kill. Daisy whose mother was murdered has been living a life controlled by her father. That is till she escapes.Daisy manages to find a room in a run down apartment building, but the freedom from her former life outweighs her less than salubrious surroundings. What Daisy doesn't know is that she has caught the eye of the man living in the building oposite. Nikolai is drawn to Daisy and watches her whenever possible. He manages to engineer a meeting with her, and things move forward between them from there.A fascinating and compellingly written romance that is quite different from my normal romance books. Nikolai is a cold blooded killer. He kills for money, and unlike tattooed heroes in other books his have a meaning to those who know what to look for. They tell his story. Daisy has zero experience of men, at 21 she's never even been kissed. Nikolai struggles with what Daisy's reaction will be to what he does. But it's not long before it intrudes and puts them both in danger. There are some scenes other readers might find are not for them, mainly violence. But this is an engrossing story with well drawn characters.

Love "if you do not want me to break your wrist with one squeeze of my hand, you will do two things immediately, First you will remove your hand from my woman's purse. Second, you will remove your hand from my shirt. It's attached to the body that belongs to the owner of the purse." *sigh*WOW, WOW, WOW I love this book, 5 stars is nowhere near enough stars for this book. If you times them by 100 it still wouldn't be enough. it blew me away and made me want to weep when I finished it. yes it really was that good. It's very obvious that Jessica Clare and Jen Frederick are an amazing writing team who can pump out insanely amazing books. I can't wait for book two. They are going on my stalk list so I can get book two the second it is released.Nick(or Nikolai) is a hit man and while tracking his next hit he finds Daisy, she lives in the building next to him and he finds himself watching her more and more, till one day he see's a man touching her laundry. While stopping him Nick comes face to face with Daisy. Daisy had a loving family till her mother was killed, then her life turned upside down her father became scared of everything and soon their home became her prison. With no other choice Daisy leaves and starts a new life never thinking that she would find anyone like Nick. When they meet neither can deny the attraction and with Daisy's clothes "accidentally" ruined by Nicolai, Nick convinces her to go shopping with him. And so starts Nick and Daisy's relationship soon Nick and Daisy are falling in love and discovering all life has to offer. But Nick hasn't given up his profession so he finds himself keeping more and more from Daisy. With his mentors death he soon finds himself the target and it will be a race against time to not only kill those guilty but keeping Daisy safe.Where to start with all the things I loved about this book, I guess it would be easier to tell you what I didn't like.....um nothing. But the very best, wonderful awesome thing about this book would be........ Nick. He may be the most possessive, crazy, stalker, in lover hero I have ever read about ever in my whole entire life. No joke he was insane, I love him and wish that I could take him home. Daisy WAS IT for him no one else would do and all he wanted to do was make her happy and safe she deserved nothing but the very best in his eyes. Nick wasn't even ok with men being by her or looking at her, and when he thought he may loose her his plan was to wreak pain and death in his wake did I mention I loved Nick (seriously there was not a thing that I didn't love about him). Daisy was a great heroine she was strong and determined to find happiness. The flow of the story was perfect, I never felt like the story was dragged out or that useless filler was added. I was riveted to this book and never wanted to put it down. This amazing writing duo work brilliantly together and did an incredible job writing not only Daisy's point of view but Nikolai, I believed Nick's point of view completely it felt like he was real and that he was really telling his story, it was stunning. I never wanted this book to end. We get a great introduction into the characters of book two, as I was reading I hoped that they would get their own book and was so happy when I saw that they would be next. I hope this series continues for a long time, and that the series just gets better(though I'm not even sure if that's humanly possible. This is a must read.

20 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Disturbing, dark and just not well done. By starsaga This story did not work for me. Simply because the deeds and horrors were too extreme yet the book felt naive. What I mean by this is that both Daisy and Nick were products of extreme environments in their own way. As a story this might have made sense, for them to meet and fall in love if the survival instinct they both had was made the focus of this story. Instead of showing these two people as fighters who overcame the odds and found each other, the story emphasized a sort of innocence bred from naive acceptance of each other. A desperation that no one else would want them so they turned to one another. It was very dark book with killers who looked their victims in the face and shot them dead, who dissolved a human being for the assignment of killing, yet somehow saved innocents by killing the monsters of society. That vague sense of justice was the only meagre redemption in this book. Viewed from a law-abiding perspective, all of them were ultimately wrong and the authors failed to convince me that what they saw in one another though the climax of this story was enough to sustain the growth of a loving relationship. In my opinion these characters should have been more mature, having overcome their innocence by virtue of their hard-knock life, and then I would have believed in the Last Hit and the overwhelming emotion that they developed for each other. Daisy could still have been a sheltered woman that Nicolas put his life on the line for, that he was crazy in love with, that he would protect forever, and that he was humbled by her returning his love. The violence that was his reality would then be a sign of strength as what happens when dark forces clash, not merely something that was to be swept under the rug because it was just one more messy detail. The sex and the passion he showed her would not have been as mis-matched and mis-placed as it felt here. As it was, this book appeared ill-conceived and underdeveloped as an assassin suspense book and definitely did not work for me an enduring love story.

All six books in the bestselling Soulkeepers Series, all in one place and for one low price!

This deal won't last. Don't miss it!˃˃˃ The Soulkeepers, Book 1

When fifteen-year-old Jacob Lau is pulled from the crumpled remains of his mother's car, no one can explain why he was driving or why the police can't find his mother's body. A beautiful and mysterious neighbor offers to use her unique abilities to help him find his mom. But in exchange she requires Jacob to train as a Soulkeeper, a protector of human souls. He agrees to her demands, desperate for any clue to the mystery of his mother's disappearance. But soon Jacob finds himself trapped in a web of half-truths, and questions her motives for helping him.

˃˃˃ Weaving Destiny, Book 2

Malini Gupta thought Jacob Lau was her destiny. But after months of failing to decipher how she fits into the Soulkeepers, frustration threatens to tear their relationship apart. And it doesn't help that a new Soulkeeper named Mara is ready to stop time itself to earn Jacob's love.

When Malini faces her worst fears, and even death, she learns a funny thing about destiny. Fate is a tapestry of choices, and she has the power to weave hers.

˃˃˃ Return to Eden, Book 3

Dr. Abigail Silva has waited over 10,000 years for redemption and a chance at a real relationship with the angel she loves. But when you're made from evil itself, it's hard to remember if salvation is worth the wait. With Lucifer's plan coming to fruition, she must decide if God's offer of humanity is all it's cracked up to be, or if a deal with the devil is the more promising solution.

˃˃˃ Soul Catcher, Book 4

A murder. A mission. A mystery.

Dane Michaels has been to Hell and back and isn't interested in repeating the experience. But as a human caught up in the Soulkeeper's world, his life isn't exactly his own. No one can explain why Dane was allowed through the gates of Eden, but it's changed everything. Now, the only one who can make him feel safe is Ethan, the telekinetic Soulkeeper with a dark past and a heart of gold.

When Malini asks Dane to be part of a mission to find the last Soulkeeper, Cheveyo, more than one team member thinks she's tempting Fate. But Malini suspects Fate has had a hand in Dane's life for some time and that he could be the key to unraveling Lucifer's latest plan of attack.

˃˃˃ Lost Eden, Book 5

Rules. Balance. Consequences. War.

When Fate gave Dane the water from Eden to drink, she did more than save his life. She changed his destiny. Since the beginning, a covenant between God and Lucifer has maintained a tenuous peace, balancing Soulkeepers and Watchers and the natural order of things. Dane upset that balance the day he became a Soulkeeper. Fate broke the rules.

Now, Lucifer is demanding a consequence, requiring Fate to pay the ultimate price for her involvement. God intervenes on the immortal’s behalf but in order to save her soul must dissolve the covenant and with it the rules, order, and balance that have kept the peace. A challenge is issued. A contest for human souls begins. And the stakes? Earth. Winner take all.

The Soulkeepers are at the center of a war between Heaven and Hell, and this time nobody, anywhere, is safe from Lucifer’s reach.

˃˃˃ The Last Soulkeeper, Book 6

The end is near.

Just when the Soulkeepers think they’ve established a foothold in the war between Heaven and Hell, the playing field shifts. Enraged by Cord’s disappearance, Lucifer replaces his right-hand man with the Wicked Brethren, three Watchers so formidable even their own kind fears them.

The Soulkeepers struggle to survive in an increasingly deadly world while continuing to defend human souls. How far will they go when saving the world means sacrificing their most precious team member?

In 1983 librarian Peter Stangl took his teenaged son and daughter to Budapest, to show them the city and the land where he had grown up. He wrote an account of that trip, which he titled “Pebbles,” because a surprise encounter with some stones his mother had painted stirred up such strong memories of his boyhood. In time, Mr. Stangl expanded his memoir into a saga of memories of world-shaking events that he had witnessed as a boy and young man in Hungary: the rise of Naziism, the violence of World War II, the subsequent Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, and the Hungarian uprising in 1956. Interspersed with these accounts of history in the making, the author gives a fond anecdotal chronicle of his family. After his hair-raising escape from Hungary, Peter Stangl landed in New York, via Vienna. The story ends with his assimilation into Yale University and a reunion with family in Paris.

Donovan Painted Pebbles: A Hungarian Memoir didn't come from the usual intention to publish a book: it was written as a gift to the author's son and daughter as a family history, and took on a life of its own in seeing publication in a book that will now reach a wider audience. The story begins with a description of the author's early childhood during World War II, as he recalls air raids, being Jewish in an increasingly Nazi world, and becoming trapped in Budapest's ghetto until the Soviets arrived in 1945, there to experience a different kind of totalitarian rule under their hand until he escaped to the West during the 1956 October uprising.Political and cultural survival techniques, insights, and experiences mark a journey that led to his eventual success as a Yale student in a new world. Anyone interested in accounts of European history will find this memoir an engrossing story of survival.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Ann H. Clark Last year after reading this memorable book I wrote a short review: "Superb story telling with action and heart-rending times. A must-read." That's all true and having just finished reading it for a second time, I find it even more compelling, historically fascinating, and personally riveting. The street smarts, academic achievement, language abilities, bravery, persistence and superb survival skills Peter possessed served him well after losing his mother during the Holocaust. Aided by his remarkable father and grandmother, he weathered the Nazi's, then the Russian invasion and totalitarian rule until he was able to escape during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising to Vienna. There he contacted family and friends who helped him emigrate to the United States and Yale University. Eventually he was invited to become Head Librarian at the Stanford University Medical Center. He now is a leader at his retirement community in Palo Alto, California. The cream continues to rise to the top!

By Susan Springer This is the riveting story of the author’s harrowing journey from war-time Hungary to Yale University. Along the way, pre-teen Peter lost his mother in the holocaust, was hunted by Nazi thugs for being Jewish, and survived the brutal siege of Budapest only to be persecuted by the post-war communist regime for being of middle-class origin. Peter recounts his perilous escape from Hungary during the height of the Cold War, and his travel to the US, where he arrived penniless and with only a minimal knowledge of English. Through Peter’s trials and tribulations the reader obtains a firsthand account of life in war-torn Hungary and during the subsequent Cold War. His difficulties and successes as a poor immigrant would be of interest to recent immigrants as well as to others whose forebears came to the US under difficult circumstances.

Bryant This is a tremendously inspiriting account of how one very strong man overcame adversity that would overwhelm most people. This book is a great read for anyone regardless of whether or not someone might have a disability or not. Anyone will be motivated and inspired by this man's journey through life. Reading this book motivated me to do better at everything in life from being a parent to being a professional businessman. I highly recommend this book to all no matter at what station in life one might be. I particularly enjoyed the very romantic beach proposal story. I couldn't make it thru that chapter without tearing up. A reader won't want to put this one down.

An inspiring story of recovery when no medical cure exists By DocG As the host for VoiceAmerica’s internet radio talk show, Family Caregivers Unite, I've always been impressed with Dr. JR Harding, his candor and his approach to life. His new book "ADA Adventure: A Quadriplegic's Journey" documents his full and active life despite two separate, severe spinal cord injuries. An inspirational read for anybody, it’s a story of recovery from challenges for which medicine, my erstwhile profession, offers no cures.

Black My first meeting with David Teich was in the spring of 1951 when the Chinese made their largest offensive of the Korean War. I was a member of the 8th Airborne Ranger Company. At the time, we were at least five miles deep in Chinese controlled territory. We were on a mountainside engaged in a fierce fire fight. We had a third of our company down, dead or wounded It seemed no one could help us. The order from higher headquarters, was "get out best way possible." Our radio operator made contact with the Platoon leader of the 3rd Platoon, Company C, 6th Medium Tank Battalion. They were part of a force covering the withdrawal of the US 24th, Infantry Division. The Tank Platoon leader could not bring his tanks up the mountainside but told us if we could make it to the valley floor he would have his tanks waiting to take us out. That Platoon leader was then Lieutenant David Teich. On a razor-back ridge drawing fire from three sides and the fourth a sharp drop off, we concentrated our fire on the lower ground Chinese and broke their fire. Carrying our critically wounded we made it to the valley floor. True to his word, the brave Lt Teich had his five tanks waiting for us. I never knew David Teich as a policeman, but I have known him as soldier, patriot and friend. His story is inspirational, informative to all and a guide for young Americans . It is a life well lived and a FIVE STAR READCol. Ret. Robert W. Black

He trained as a mechanic and was duly assigned to 744th Light Tank Battalion. Here he trained as a gunner and learnt to drive all the battalions vehicles, including their M3 and later M5 light tanks. Against his will though, he was made a medic. It was in this role that he went with his unit to England and then to battle in Normandy. The hedgerow fighting was difficult for everyone. Teich had occasions where he sought the wounded, without knowing where the front line was. He quickly learned the realities of battle and bravely undertook his job. He operated in conjunction with a halftrack ambulance and litter bearers. This and other much less important jobs was not what he’d came to war to do. A clever ploy however saw him transferred to the battalion’s recon platoon and he served with this through the rest of the drive through France and in Germany. His role is essentially that of an infantryman. He is involved in patrols and scouting and there are several fascinating stories, including his associations with British forces. It is not a long section of his book though. After doing a few odd jobs, Teich rejoined the army. First the Air Corps, then he did OCS, with a whole heap of interesting postings and experiences along the way. As an officer he was assigned a platoon of M4A3E8 tanks in the 44th Tank Battalion. With the Korean War going badly some armoured officers were being reassigned to the infantry but Teich manages to get sent to the 6th Medium Tank Battalion, attached to the 24th Infantry Division. It was in this role that he engages in some desperate combat against the North Koreans. The situation is a mess, some orders are crazy, so he does what he has to. There is some very close quarters combat here and this part of the book is much more detailed than the WW2 phase. Following the war he stays in the army for a while and has some very interesting postings, particularly to Germany. After the service, Teich gets involved in policing. This is quite a lengthy part of the book because he has a huge variety of roles and experiences. There are heaps of interesting anecdotes. Even better, is the learning process. He writes of his decisions and actions, not all of which were met with applause from his employers. It is fascinating reading of his integrity in the face of buffoonery. There is also a little on his family challenges and this gives the full picture of a brave and patriotic man who lived an extraordinary life. The text is quite readable. Cindy Butts writes Mr Teich’s recollections down in the first person. This all reads well enough with only a curious failure to capitalise the names of military units a jarring note. This book is probably best read by Americans who are interested in members of the Greatest Generation. The policing section is longer than the military phase, so there’s a lot to learn altogether. Highly Recommended.Note - Unfortunately Amazon has discontinued its list feature, so I can't add this book in with the other WW2 US Armored Corps accounts I have read.

Nevola I must be a sucker for memoirs from World War II veterans but I loved this story despite the numerous editing errors (which included repeated passages and inaccurate descriptions of weapons and units just to name a few). Mr. TeIch must have had one of the most diverse military careers in the history of the United States Army. Volunteering for everything, he found himself as an infantryman, scout, military policeman, medic, driver, mechanic and heavy equipment operator. He even got unique jobs he didn't volunteer for. While his World War II experiences were most interesting to me, his tour of duty as a tank platoon officer in the Korean War (he went to OCS between wars) was surprisingly compelling as was his duties in Cold War Germany and with the Third Infantry Regiment (Honor Guard) in the Military District of Washington. These were by far more interesting (to me) than his career as a law enforcement officer.By all accounts David Teich is the kind of leader (and follower) everyone would love to have. His ethics should be a role model for others to follow. His sense of honor and integrity stand out above the rest. There are wonderful photographs at the end of the book along with a description of the many medals and citations awarded to Mr. Teich. This is a fabulous memoir of more than just a life well lived but a life of public service that should be honored and remembered; you only have to overlook the editing errors to really enjoy this book.John E. Two desperate Los Angeles policemen investigate a series of mysterious murders enter into a deadly scramble with a puzzling criminal, cutting out geometrical forms out of his victims' skin and leaving the police clues in forms of a puzzle. Your tour guide in the misty realms of the human mind will be a practicing psychiatrist: murder victims - to whom are they brought forth? Unacknowledged genius or a dangerous psychopath? Is there a lucid efficiency in an inhumane cruelty? Be sure there is no crime without a motive. Has this story happened in real life? Will it? The answer will become known only in time. Real life and fantasy are closely intertwined in the author's imagination to create a twisted plot. All the heroes of this novel have personality features of real people but none of which have the same fates as their prototypes. A detective novel is a chess match the author plays with himself, periodically shuffling the board. Who will win- white of black? Will good prevail or will evil succeed? What is the price of victory? The strictest of judges, in this case, are only bystanders and readers. The debut novel "Pheasant hunting" is a psychological thriller. The twisted plot reminds us the painting of Rene Magritte "treachery of images" on which there is an image of a pipe and "it is not a pipe"- things are not as they seem.

XIII is a collection of short stories that circle around one number and the girl that bears it proudly in black ink under her skin. It is a simple roman numeral followed by thirteen lines. The lines are all there to represent a story and how a life has been changed. Real life is simple. There is no climax, no great adventure, no fighting and explosions around every corner, and no magic that will make everything better at the most opportune moment. But real life is also hard and impossible to explain. Most importantly, life continues through the commercials and past the happily ever after. Yet there are things in it almost like fiction, hard to accept as real. And although shown through stories and fantasies, there are some things that must always be. Such as love, pain, and obsession. After all, without all of those how could such a simple number hold so many people captive?

Crossing the Bridge weaves together 26 stories of growing up in Brooklyn during the 1940's and 50's and the author’s powerful drive to leave that “ghettoed world.” With each chapter, each character sketch, and each pivotal experience, Bea Epstein, guided by her work as a psychotherapist, expands the reader’s understanding of the emotional meaning of her life’s events and their place in the complex web of family relationships. From the recollection of her parents’ journey to America as children, to the story of their painful marriage; from descriptions of the immigrant neighborhood in which she grew up, to the tragic end of her parents’ lives, we travel with the author on her journey to cross the bridge out of Brooklyn. Regardless of age or cultural heritage, readers will recognize universal human themes… the conflicts in family life, the struggle for identity, and the limits of parental love.

Crossing the Bridge: a memoir, by Bea Epstein

About the Author Bea Epstein is the first generation American daughter of immigrants from Eastern Europe. The inspiration for Crossing the Bridge grew out of her wish to honor her parents and preserve her family’s early history. Although the collection is about one family, it reminds readers that when we tell our stories, we bear witness to the past and to the truths of our lives. Searching for larger meaning, we seek continuity with previous generations, yearning to protect the memory of those who came before us from disappearing into forgetfulness. Fifteen of the stories in this collection have been published in literary magazines, four have received awards. Bea left Brooklyn and moved to Rockville, Maryland where she and her husband raised their three daughters in a log cabin in the woods. Bea continues her writing life and psychotherapy practice in the log cabin her father named “Little America.”

By Ann Rayburn The stories in Crossing the Bridge took me to times and places familiar to me through historical readings. But in this collection of memoirs, Bea Epstein introduced me to vivid, complex members of her family who lived in those times. Through her telling I came to care deeply about them. She led me to shudder at stories of escape from the Old World and to celebrate large and small triumphs in America. She took me into kitchens and neighborhoods of early Brooklyn where dreams and memories often collided. This book is filled with lives rich with achievements as well as regrets. Through her compassionate eyes, the reader's empathy and compassion are enlarged. Bea's own transition to a larger life, through marriage to the boy who took her horseback riding and then caught her runaway horse and rescued her from busy traffic, is a wondrous story of its own.

By Esther Deblinger The author, of this beautifully written book, shares her journey from childhood on, offering personal stories that are heartbreaking as well as inspiring. Her important insights about her complex immigrant family fill each chapter and are relevant for all of us. There is much to be learned from the struggles faced, the choices made and the opportunities seized. This book is a quick read and it leaves you with a great deal to ponder about life and those with whom we share our brief journey on earth. I very highly and enthusiastically recommend this wonderful recounting of life, love and family to all! I shared this delightful book with my mother who also greatly enjoyed it, demonstrating its appeal and impact across generations.

When patriarch Gerald Hawkins passes away in his Tasmanian home, after ten years of serious illness, his family experience a wave of grief and, admittedly, a surge of relief. Gerald's dominating personality has loomed large over his wife, Connie, their children, Andrew and Kerry, and his sister Flora, for decades.

Connie, whose own dreams were dispensed with upon marriage, is now determined to renew her long friendship with Gerald's estranged sister, Flora. She travels to France where she finds Flora struggling to make peace with the past and searching for a place to call home. Meanwhile Andrew's marriage is crumbling, and Kerry is trapped in stasis by unfinished business with her father.

As the family adjusts to life after Gerald, they could not be more splintered. But there are surprises in store and secrets to unravel. And once the loss has been absorbed, is it possible that they could all find a way to start afresh with forgiveness, understanding and possibility?

They made out like two highly hormonal teenagers in the backseat headed for her townhouse.

Clarice pulled her fur jacket tightly around herself as she got ready to exit the limo. The fog hung low in the night, and it had turned chilly. Her hair by now was loose around her shoulders, and she doubted she had any lipstick left on her mouth.

Marty exited the limo and extended his hand to help her to the sidewalk.

As she came close, her lips brushed his ear and she whispered, "Tell the driver he can go now. You won’t need a ride home."

The only way I could image someone elaborating this much detail and clarity in the scenes, characters and circumstances, is if she has "been there and done that". I also liked the short chapter approach. It kept me wanting to read just one more chapter, than one more again. Before I knew it, I'd finished them all . I was still hungry for more!

It holds such outstanding ideas and interest on all her characters. Caring for each other while they were young through adulthood and seeing how their lives blended. This book has tragedy, love, lies and much more and reminds us to follow our hearts and to never look back with regrets.

When the renowned saurian Species Archivist to the Powers that Be summons young wizard Kit Rodriguez to participate in an urgent off-planet intervention intended to save many millions of lives, Kit’s hardly going to say “no.” He soon discovers that not only he, but his wizardly partner Nita Callahan and her sister Dairine, his friend Ronan Nolan, and thousands of other wizards from Earth have been drafted in to intervene on the distant world called Tevaral. The planet’s single huge moon Thesba will soon break up, raining its remnants down onto the surface of Tevaral and completely destroying it. The wizards’ mission: to extract Tevaral’s hominid population and “raft” them off-planet to new homeworlds before the apocalyptic disaster begins. There’s only one problem: millions of the people of Tevaral don’t want to go. Kit, Nita and thousands of their fellow Earth wizards must now race against time to find a way to save the Tevaralti despite their near-symbiotic relationship with their beloved world and its unique life forms. As doomsday inexorably draws nearer, hope is fading fast, and it seems like it’s going to take a miracle to keep many millions of the people of Tevaral from being wiped out. True, wizardry is all about miracles. But will one turn up in time?... Young Wizards: Lifeboats is a 90,000 word canonical work in the Young Wizards universe, and falls between YW book 9, A Wizard of Mars, and the forthcoming book 10, Games Wizards Play.

Switzer I haven't written a review for quite a while, but I figured this book deserved one. The thing about the Young Wizards series is that it keeps getting better, which cannot be said for many other book series. Here we are 9 books in (not including this or the rest of the transitional trilogy), and the story line is still going strong. There is no point in giving a synopsis, since there's already one listed. I WILL say why I enjoyed it, though. For one thing, it was longer than Not On My Patch, or How Lovely Are Thy Branches; it felt much more like a full length novel. Although I loved those two, this one was my favorite. There is a bunch of low-key intensity the whole way through. But I think the best part was the character development. Ms. Duane is superb at dialect, and it was great fun to read the conversational segments between various characters. There was one in particular between Kit and a new alien that actually had me laughing out loud. All in all, fun, thoughtful, and definitely worth the read. Bring on the next one!

As usual, Duane writes an interesting story, with fascinating alien characters, and a mystery to be solved by a lot of brainwork. The "Adversary" isn't nearly as evident in this novel, but that doesn't mean there is less tension; if anything it makes for a more interesting plot. This story is more Kit-centric. Nita is there, and does interact some with Kit, but she's at another site - so we don't see the sort of teamwork between this pair that we usually get in this series. I will admit, I love the Feline Wizard stories even more, and was glad that Rhiow got at least a brief walk-on moment in this novel. I enjoyed this addition to Duane's Wizard's Universe.

Highly Recommended By Benjamin Williams A fantastic, relatively light-hearted romp in the Young Wizard's universe where Diane Duane's top-notch characterization and world-building particularly shine through. I bought this from the author's website for entertainment on a cross-country road trip, and was happily engaged the entire trip simply reading the whole book through two or three times. If anyone is hesitant because the book isn't an official numbered entry in the series: don't be. This book is easily on par with any other book in the series in terms of length, quality, and everything else that matters. My only recommendation would be that if you're new to the series, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning.

After reading Wilder, the first book in the Wilder: The Guardian Series, as well as an advanced copy of it’s sequel Wilder Destiny, I just had to get my hands on Finding Wilder. It was such a fun read and I loved being able to see what was going on inside of Nico’s head as it was told from a first person perspective. This novella is set just after the Constantin brothers move to Oak Bluffs and tells of when Nico first meets Celeste Wilder. It was fun seeing his first impressions and feeling of her and answered a question or two of why he didn’t pursue Celeste himself. I also enjoyed the interactions between Nico and his brother Roman as well as well as learning a little more about their background. This novella could be read at any point within the series though it does contain scenes from the first book retold through Nico’s point of view. I recommend this to anyone who is a Wilder fan and for those looking for a glimpse into the world G.K. DeRosa created. Though be warned, after you get a taste of this novella you’re gonna want more so be prepared to follow it up with Wilder and Wilder Destiny.

Yes, there are vampires and werewolves in it (cameo appearances in this one), but the two main characters (the Constatin brothers) appear to be something different. We don't find out exactly what they are in this book, and that's part of the fun. It makes you want to read the series. This is sort of a side story to G. K. DeRosa's Guardian Series. As such it's a very effective way to give readers a sample of the series and to hook them. It hooked me. I have purchased the first book in the series to read. Why 4 stars and not 5? It's partly a matter of taste. I tend to reserve 5 for those that blow me away. This is very good and enjoyable, but not quite at the "wow" level. The editing quality is also 4 out 5, not quite perfect.(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

By SWIR *I received a copy of this book in return for an honest reviewI enjoyed this book even more than I expected to since I am unfamiliar with DeRosa's works. The first couple pages reminded me a bit of the Salvatore brothers in L.J. Smith's "Vampire Diaries" books once I realized it wasn't going in that direction I was able to get lost in the story. Every question I had while reading was answered by the end of the book and I appreciate the way we were given a bit of back story on the characters since, my understanding is, the novella can be read at any point in the series. I can't wait to dive into the first book in the series and see how "Finding Wilder" plays into the rest of the books in the series.

What is it like growing up in America? The answer depends partly on the time and place. More specifically, what was it like growing up in a mid-America Minnesota around mid-20th century? This book provides an answer to the question. Minnesota Boy: Growing Up in Mid-America, Mid-20th Century is a new edition and a new title for a book that Lee Foster wrote and photographed in the late 1960s. The book was first published in 1970 and titled Just 25 Cents and Three Wheaties Boxtops. Foster was studying American Literature and beginning his writing career as a graduate student at Stanford at the time. His mentor, Wallace Stegner, liked the book and assisted him in getting an agent and publisher. This book is a collection of memories. It is something other than essays forming a memoir. It attempts to approximate the language, conversation, thought, images, and feelings of the era. The goal is to capture the essence and spirit of growing up in a Minnesota America of that era. As Lee Foster wrote in the 1970 edition: “The boy often dreamed of where his life would roam as a man. When he became a man, who had lived 26 years on the planet, he looked back on his life and created a dream, not unlike his earlier dreams of the future. Memories of his times returned, some as recent as a year ago, some as dimly distant as 20 years past, often bursting forth gratuitously, always appearing in an order that was true to a chronology of the spirit, a truth of textures and shadings and fragile moments. He realized, as the pleasures of his re-creation stretched into months, that the story belonged less to himself than to a part of his generation. Phrases, objects, and people, as they passed before him, spoke their imprisoned moments of the past, which, like a thousand genies within bottles, lay always present, but definitely mute, waiting for their proper decoders, waiting for those singers of songs who reach for the magic words and unlock fragments of all our secrets.” “Minnesota Boy is a poetic slice of Americana” –Jim Gebbie “A brilliant memoir portrait, masterful writing, with significant historical value” – Ann F. Purcell

Enjoyable memories of midwestern values and experiences By Michael F Wyatt Charming and easy to read reprisal of some distinct images and memories of growing up in a different era. The photos capture some timeless moments of days gone by, and the stories of lakes, trains, local bullies, and coming of age all come together nicely in this book. Minnesota and Midwest notions are captured very well.

Ulmen Very well written and illustrated nostalgic rewrite of "35 cents and Two Wheaties Boxtops" from several decades ago. "Minnesota Boy" features the town of Mankato Minnesota c. 1940's-1950's, where Lee Foster grew up.Mankato is also the site of the hanging of 38 Sioux warriors following the Dakota Conflict of 1862, which was and still remains the largest mass execution in the history of the United States. This story is available at Amazon in the format of your choice as "Blood on the Prairie, A Novel of the Sioux Uprising."
