The life of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata was the stuff that legends are made of. Born and raised in a tiny village in the small south-central state of Morelos, he led an uprising in 1911 - one strand of the larger Mexican Revolution - against the regime of longtime president Porfirio Diaz. He fought not to fulfill personal ambitions but for the campesinos of Morelos, whose rights were being systematically ignored in Don Porfirio's courts.

Expanding haciendas had been appropriating land and water for centuries in the state, but as the 20th century began things were becoming desperate. It was not long before Diaz fell. But Zapata then discovered that other national leaders - Francisco Madero, Victoriano Huerta, and Venustiano Carranza - would not put things right, and so he fought them, too. He fought for nearly a decade until, in 1919, he was gunned down in an ambush at the hacienda Chinameca.

In this new political biography of Zapata, Brunk, a noted journalist and scholar, shows us Zapata the leader as opposed to Zapata the archetypal peasant revolutionary. In previous writings on Zapata, the movement was covered, and Zapata the man got lost in the shuffle. Brunk clearly demonstrates that Zapata's choices and actions did indeed have a historical impact.

One of the many persons who have been intrigued by Zapata's mythical persona has been Samuel Brunk. Brunk first conducted his comprehensive research on Zapata while he was a graduate student at the University of New Mexico. Brunk's current research deals with certain aspects of Zapata not covered in this book, mainly with the accuracy of the cultural and political myth ascribed to Zapata since his death. Brunk currently teaches at the University of Texas at El Paso. His area of expertise is twentieth century Mexican history. Brunk states that "the primary goal of the book is to provide a . . . political biography of Zapata, and to demonstrate . . . That his choices and actions . . . [had] a historical impact." Brunk portrays Zapata as a man with utopian ideals who is plagued by personal faults. He contends that Zapata, or more precisely, Zapatisimo had, and has had, an enduring effect on th Mexican conscience and psyche. His work, over a third of which is composed of notes and references, is well researched. Brunk utilizes oral interviews, anthropological data, and newspaper and archival documents (many of which had been recently released) to develop his thesis. Although Brunk does a wonderful job in compiling information to narrate his thesis, there are a few aspects to the book that are disappointing. For instance, the back of the book and the introduction claim that Brunk's depicture of Zapatisimo humanizes the Zapatisimo legacy by recanting the brutality and banditry that surrounded the movement. This controversial depicture (controversial because most previous historians and scholars who have written on Zapata have minimized or left out claims of the movement's cruelty) that was promised, however, never genuinely materializes in the pages of the book. To be sure, Brunk does give attention to the banditry that occurred during the Zapata movement, however, Brunk downplays the criminal activity conducted by Zapatistas as isolated or justified occurrences. This is rather unfortunate, not because it overly influenced his work (this does not seem to be the case). But because the promotional description of the book does not accurately apply. A prospective consumer looking forward to reading book that demonizes Zapata might be led astray by the controversial advertisement. Brunk's book only mildly describes the Zapatistas as crooks and thugs. To be fair though, some reviewers seemed satisfied with Brunk's work in illuminating Zapata's unethical activities. Going beyond what may be construed as a misleading description of the book, Brunk offers the reader a thorough account of the situation Zapata was facing during the 1910s. Overall, this is an enjoyable book, however, at times the book's readability is rough and course. Brunk's recreation of the constitutional convention is a clear example of this. It was dull, deliberate and repetitive. On the positive side, the remaining sections of the book, particularly his description on the early days of Zapatisimo, were well written. Perhaps the most pointed and painful critique, however, comes from experts in the field. John Womack, author of Zapata and the Mexican Revolution and Harvard professor, concluded that Brunk had missed "a chance for a major contribution to scholarship" in light of all the new material available to him. Notwithstanding the rather disappointing aspects to the book, it is still a book worth reading. Brunk does an excellent job depicting the shifting coalitions between the various factions of the revolution. Indeed, it would not be far fetched to suggest that Brunk's depiction of the various coalitions immensely helps the reader understand the difficulties that confronted the US in its first war of the 21st Century.

Hidalgo The book centers on how the personal life of Emiliano Zapata intermingled with his revolutionary movement during the high point of the Mexican Revolution: 1910-1919. The events and historical period the book covers are hardly new to scholarly review. In his book Brunk is standing on ground elevated by previous work- particularly by John Womack's Zapata and the Mexican Revolution. Still, from this advantageous position Brunk decided to focus his attention on the personal details of Zapata and give us a fresh political biography. This book sadly misses the opportunity to examine the cultural dimension of Zapata's life and achievements. Starting with his beginning, Brunk totally ignores the religious attribute intrinsic in the culture of south/central Mexico - which he later admits it had. Indeed, he only mentions the word church when referring to how a village offered a strategic position from the tower of the church. When referring to the machismo culture and Zapata's relationships with females, he could have linked gender issues to Zapata's revolution. When he touched on the regionalist tendencies of Zapatismo, he could have compared one region against the other in greater details as to illuminate why regionalism was such a strong force. There were several questions that their answers could have enriched his research. How did religion influence the motivation of Zapatistas? What was the reaction of local priest and other members of the clergy, to Zapata's actions, and what type of relationship they had? What role did women play in Zapata's movement? How did the fatalism of machismo influence the outcome of the events? If the Guerreros were not as motivated for land reform as the Morelos were, what other motivations led them to follow Zapata? What role did Indians had within or against Zapatismo? Brunk seems too concern at portraying Zapata as a benign leader, and worthy of idolization. While describing his childhood, he rarely criticizes the tradition as a source (with one important exemption), but it tends to place it at the center of the description. The book also has an inclination to smooth out Zapata's rough characteristics. Indeed, when there is someone to falter, there are always many candidates that are not Zapata. And when there is no way that Zapata can escape guilt, masterfully, Brunk explains out the reasons in a way that everything seems inevitable and the reader may sympathize with Zapata. The more obvious example, probably, is when a spirit of paranoia invaded the Zapata's camp, and he is not able to control it. At this moment Brunk chose to emphasize the doings of others, and when there was reference to Zapata's behavior, Brunk always did it with a compassionated tone and explaining that most convictions were done with lots of regrets. Furthermore, Zapata is presented as fair when he decided not to punish, and when he decided to punish, regardless that the cases were very similar and that the motivation for change appears to be related to mood swings more than any other factors. Undoubtedly, this book falls short of a complete description of the Mexican Revolution. This was not the intention of the book. However, the reader may gather the wrong impression of the Mexican Revolution by following the logic of the book. In many occasions the author clearly placed Zapatismo as the Revolution, and yet, in other parts he moved to explain how it was only a strand of a larger movement. This seemingly contradiction is not an isolated element. When Brunk tells about the differences on Villa and Zapata, and how that influenced the outcome of their relationship, he vacillates to use more unambiguous terms. To those fond of the scientific historical perspective and of empirical data, this book may prove a disappointment. What this book does is to allow the reader to appreciate the Mexican Revolution, and more specifically, Zapatismo, from the personal life of Zapata. The emphasis on Zapata's life is more on his relationships to his subordinates and enemies, and this focus brings a totally new perspective into the matter. It seems that by getting close to Zapata's leadership Brunk gained an edge in understanding Zapata. By the constant use of the word "perhaps" one can assume that Brunk commonly relies on his intuition cultivated by years of personal acquaintance with the original sources leading to Zapata. Through Brunk's style the reader may appreciate the influence of personalities and how power conflict influenced the Revolution and its southern strand: Zapatismo. Through this book the reader may appreciate how the unfolding of personal interaction determined the relationship between Zapata and his intellectuals. In explaining internal conflicts within Zapatismo, Brunk clearly understands how the rural people related to each other and how that differed from those coming from the city: in the country they looked in the eye, in the city they thought in terms of systems. (126) When returning to Morelos, Brunk describes a lively Zapata, full of energy as he makes his leadership, once again, dependent on his charisma and personality. Brunk also brilliantly explains how the concept of justice was more a personal matter to Zapata and how it evolved out of his relationship to others. And finally, Brunk takes the reader to Zapata's vacillation before going toward Jesus Guajardo; how he knew that he was gambling his live by doing so. This inside view into Zapata's political and military world could not be achieved without Brunk's emphasis on Zapata's personal relationships. At the end the reader may agree with Brunk in that brutality, pain, and personalism "formed an integral part of the Revolution, without which could not be understood." (238) There is no doubt that Brunk employed contemporary research and advanced analytical skills to study the political life of Zapata. Yet, he departs a little from the overly skeptic attitude of some current scholars who avoid personal worship and prefer a more depressing view of life. According to Brunk, then, the Revolution was indeed a revolution, and Zapatismo was a peasant's revolution with clear political and social significance.

I enjoyed it greatly as I'm a native Texan yet never thought too much about (and don't recall learning much about Zapata in school). This audiobook especially paints the larger picture of Mexican history. There's so much to absorb in this book but it really gives a great deal of detail as to put the listener within the historical setting.I was impressed with this book enough to look up more photos of Zapata and he is a very recognizable figure with his large sombrero and mustache. Whenever he talked the people into growing sugarcane, that made me remember someone in my family giving us kids stalks of sugarcane from Mexico. All in all, my opinion of listening to this audiobook is that Emiliano Zapata was and is an important figure in Mexico's history even to this day. There are a lot of minute details that are definitely worth the listen including his relationship with Pancho Villa and others. Totally fascinating.Charles Henderson Norman did a nice job narrating this audiobook. He had a reporting style which was informative. He spoke clearly and his Spanish pronunciation was impeccable. Really great work.

Like a modern-day Candide, writer C.J. Campbell started his journey to achieve peace in the bosom of a safe environment with a well-meaning adviser to guide him, and like Candide, he journeyed out into a world where everything went wrong, sometimes in hilarious ways, sometimes in excruciatingly heartbreaking ways, but always in entertaining ways. Seven years of his travels are painstakingly detailed in his memoir The Zen of Beard Trimming. Punk rock meets leaving Christian Evangelism meets Scandanavian models meets a mismatched cast of unlikely characters and scenarios in a fearless, brutally honest chronicling of the time-honored search for (meaning, love, peace, an apartment, food, and a damn microphone that works).

By Christine Sabas This book is a well-crafted and insightful study into radical faith, disability, life, poverty, yearning and the human condition in the US.I read this book, cover to cover, in the day it arrived. I am really grateful for this powerfully honest account of a tumultuous few years in the author's life. By turns hilarious, painful, starkly truthful, blisteringly condemnatory, gentle and grace-filled and exuding a strength and wisdom forged in trial and tested daily.C.J. Campbell writes of the social/constructed barriers for a person with disabilities, situated very much in the US in the first years of the 21st Century. He weaves in global events without losing sight of the personal, sometimes intense revelations.I particularly found the description of life with a visible disability in evangelical/healing churches to be well-crafted, humorous, and powerfully convicting. Being seen by eager evangelists as merely a body designed to display their healing prayers rather than a complex human being with a faith perspective of his own is a great way of seeing how society as a whole designs projects, buildings and communities without taking into account the lived experience of people with different abilities.

US Navy veteran Mike Smith offers a glimpse of the spiritualism, adventure, and navy traditions of the ageless brotherhood of sailors in his fascinating memoir, In the Presence of Heroes.

Smith provides a vivid portrait of daily life and the tragic events aboard the USS Frank E. Evans during the Vietnam War, as well as detailing his own son’s experience decades later on the USS Cole.

Largely forgotten by their government, their country, and the world, these heroic men are few in number, but their stories still beg to be told.

When an Australian carrier rips into the side of the USS Frank E. Evans, only its stern section remains, and Smith loses seventy-four of his comrades in just minutes.

Years later, Smith’s son Johnnie is on the USS Cole in Yemen for routine fueling when suicide bombers blow a hole in the ship’s hull, killing seventeen sailors and injuring thirty-seven others.

These parallel incidents, witnessed and survived by this remarkable father-and-son team, highlight the camaraderie, sacrifice, and heroism of US Navy fighters.

With many stories already lost to time, death, and a reluctance to relive the past, In the Presence of Heroes comes just in time.

About the Author

Mike Smith is a veteran of the US Navy who now works as a professional carpet installer. Married to his high school sweetheart, they have four children.

After years of showing no mercy, the ghost of his past continually tugged at his heartstrings and Smith was eventually persuaded to record the story of the Vietnam navy fighters aboard the USS Frank E. Evans before they were all lost to posterity.

In his memoir, In the Presence of Heroes, Smith honors the timeless brotherhood of sailors, the US military, and the fallen comrades who sacrificed their lives for their country, chronicling the experiences of both himself and his oldest son, Johnnie, who was serving aboard the USS Cole when it was attacked by suicide terrorists in 2000.

Smith A vivid emotional nonfiction story that provides an inside aspect on the struggles and political tensions as a navy enlisted Sailor in the 1960’s and a more contemporary look on the US Navy today. Mike Smith passionately takes you through the enjoyments and heartbreaks of military life and its effect on the families of those serving. Smith stunningly recaps the excitement and customs of being in the navy and the traumatic events to follow of the FRANK E EVANS collision, and the October of 2000 terrorist attack on USS COLE. Smith beautifully captures lost traditions and extraordinary experiences of the unparalleled camaraderie and brotherhood of Sailors of the Vietnam Era and in today’s navy. In the Presences of Heroes is an excitingly suspenseful memoir of intense events that are intensely fascinating!

O'Neil Fantastic read spanning over 30 years and 2 generations of dedicated service in the United States Navy. Mike's heartwarming as well as heartbreaking narrative of actual events is riveting. However, 'In the Presence of Heroes' is more than a story of a sailor's life at sea; it encompasses memories of youthful frivolity, friendships, maturity, commitments, brotherhood and the love and strength of family. Some never had a chance to tell what happened on June 3, 1969 or October 12, 2000 so Mike has given them a voice. Thank you, Mike, for allowing the families of these unsung heroes to know that their loved ones will never be forgotten. Bravo Zulu!!!

By NANA B A wonderful book telling the TRUE STORY of the 74 men lost aboard the USS FRANK E EVAN and also the horrific events of the USS COLE. This book is written by a survivor of the USS FRANK E EVAN and the FATHER of a survivor of the USS COLE. To say that these 2 tragedies left an emotional impact upon this man and his family would be lacking. There are no words and yet Mike Smith has found the words to bring these events to paper.....a must read!

My grandmother was a very strict woman. She did not care that how she said things sounded like she was yelling. She would tell you to say Madam Viper or Lady Viper. She was very formal, strict, and fancy. She would dress in clothes from the 1800s and her favorite was the Gibson Girl. And she did not like the punk and or rock clothes I'd wear. I was never into all the fancy girly-girl clothes. What I mean is the dresses. I dislike dresses! I mean even as a little kid. I didn't even play dress up and have tea parties. "Sorry Madam, but I don't know what I've done this time" I yelled back as I turned around to get away. "I've missed you Abigail" Madam Viper said. "Oh that's a big fat lie" I shouted. "Abigail Ferrari Viper, Don't you dare shout at me" Madam Viper yelled. "No! I'm done listening to all of your strict stuff, because you never cared once that I was alive you didn't! Tiffany and Helen never had to try for their accustoms from you! But I did and not once did you accept me" I yelled in tears. "Abigail please listen to me" Madam Viper begged. "NO GRANDMOTHER" I yelled crying as I ran back into the school.

Clint, a first-generation American, feels a calling to postpone law school to travel to Nigeria where his parents were born. His parents, who had distanced themselves from Nigeria, had striven to make him American. Against their wishes, he went to live with his grandparents at Arochukwu, a small town situated on one of the tributaries of the Cross River, and to participate in its traditions. There, through stories, he started experiencing the life of his great-grandfather Achi, who had been brought to the area as a slave in the late eighteenth century. Achi had lived at a time when the Aros' influence among other ethnic groups was waning, following a 1901-1902 British invasion to destroy the deity from which the Aros derived their power and to open the area to Christian missionaries. This is a story of a young African American's struggle to reclaim his identity.

Mrs .Shields gives the reader, who may be unfamiliar with the history and traditions of the Nigerian Ibo tribe in which she was raised, an understandingof how these still heavily influence community leadership there. This is accomplished through the eyes of a college graduate, raised in America but of Nigerian parents, who are ,somewhat ashamed of their ancestry, and have avoided discussing this with him. They would prefer he not seek familiarity with his "roots". He decides to make a long visit "home" anyways.

If there is one memoir you plan to read in the coming year, let it be this one By Laura Fabiani I just turned the last page of this book and feel like I've just ended this extraordinary journey with Sima Goel, a Jewish woman who was raised in Iran, her beloved homeland until her escape at the age of seventeen. Yes, seventeen. After reading Fleeing the Hijab, I will never look at a refugee the same way again. My sense of compassion and understanding has been heightened. This is a powerful telling of one woman's journey to freedom. As Sima's government changed with the arrival of Ayatollah Khomeini, the Iranian way of life was slowly and painfully snuffed out until its citizens lost all rights and joy of life. Books and expression of thoughts about freedom were banned, women had to wear the hijab and not one hair could be seen or she risked having hot oil thrown in her face, the police arrested people for no apparent reason, shooting them down without trial or justice. Young women were raped before being shot and these acts of senseless cruelty happened daily.Sima loved freedom and from the age of thirteen protested with the university students and freedom fighters but this became more and more dangerous, especially after she was betrayed by a school friend. Finally, rather than stay in hiding she decided she needed to escape. She was smuggled into Pakistan after crossing the desert on foot with her sister. She then lived as a refugee in a hopeless situation until finally she managed to illegally get into Canada, where she was helped and given the chance to continue her education, to work and to start e new life.Sima's writing kept me glued to the pages. I cannot stress how well Sima succeeds in transmitting her story to us with vivid details so that the people, setting and heart-pounding situations came to life. I could smell her mother's cooking, see the bustling streets of Shiraz and Tehran, feel Sima's despair and pain as she hid from her enemies. For one third of the book, she describes her childhood and her way of life in Shiraz, living in a large home with a beautiful garden with a fountain and surrounded by roses and orange and fig trees. Her relatives lived in the same neighborhood and she writes lovingly about her relationship with her grandmother and her sisters. We get to see what Jewish life was like in Shiraz under the Shah government before it was taken over and life for all Iranians changed for the worse.Sima's writing is honest and raw at times as she holds nothing back about her feelings as she struggled with a repressive regime that stripped her of every right. What is most extraordinary is that this happened over thirty years ago and yet her story is written with utmost details. As a reader I felt like I was living it with her as she recounted it. This is quite a feat and I admire her courage in reliving it as she told it.Sima was a curious child and her love of education was nurtured by her mother who was a nurse and a free thinker. Her mother instilled in her daughters the view that women should be educated and could be independent without having to rely on a husband to be someone. Her mother's example and way of thinking propelled Sima and this along with her experience made her into the strong woman she is today. This is a touching story that made me smile and it made me cry. It made me undergo a slew of feelings as I read it. It inspired me and motivated me. If there is one memoir you plan to read in the coming year, let it be this one. It is one of the best books I have read this year.Note: I received a free copy in exchange of an honest review.

Great story about hope By David Watson Fleeing The Hijab by Sima Goel is the emotional true story of two teenage girls who dreamed of something better. It was the early 1980’s and Sima at the age of thirteen was protesting The repressive government in Iran. Things would get worse in her country though as a new regime came into power and living conditions became even worse for Iranian women.Sima had seen family die, had to leave school, was being forced to wear a hijab and realized that she wouldn’t be able to live the life she wanted if she stayed in Iran. Rather than stay in the conditions she was in, she left the country she loved and trekked across the desert to Pakistan and hopefully freedom. The journey was not easy and once they escaped their predicament they became strangers in a strange land with no one to help them. This story is a lot of different things, it’s a coming of age story, a story of courage and a tale of what it takes for some to earn their freedom. I was drawn to this book because I wondered how two girls could survive a trip across the desert and travel to a land where you knew nobody and couldn’t speak the language. Of course their lives in Iran would have been worse which leads me to one of the things that I really liked about this book.Despite the repression that Sima felt in Iran she still talks lovingly about her homeland in this book. The way she describes her family, her home, the seasons in Iran and the fruit trees, you see that she still loves her country and feels no bitterness. Reading this made me feel bad for the Syrian refugees because like Sima they are being forced from their home. I also like the description of Iran in this book. I didn’t know a lot about that area of the world so I liked hearing Sima’s tales of growing up and her adventures as part of the three musketeers(read it and you will understand). I knew nothing about the people in Iran and hearing about Sima’s childhood made me think that she wasn’t that different from American kids in a lot of ways.Another scene I liked was when Sima as a child is playing in a park. She starts to play with another kid that she doesn’t know and the mother of the child comes over and asks Sima’s last name. When the mother hears the name Goel she is upset with Sima and takes her child away because the child is a Muslim and Sima is Jewish. Sima is an innocent child and is crushed, she rushes home and demands that her family change their name so she doesn’t have to be embarrassed again. I loved how two young children from different religions had no problem playing together but adults who are used to living a certain way can’t accept kids from a different religion being together.Fleeing The Hijab is about faith, family and love. Despite what looks like a hard life, Sima feels no anger and has gone on to make a better life for herself. This book is proof that someone can survive being repressed for being different and still go on to be a loving successful person and give other people hope. This book is a must read for anyone that has gone through a hard time and thought that things can’t get better.

Filled with Memories, History, and Intrigue By Sherrey Meyer FTC Disclosure: I received a copy of Fleeing the Hajib from the author via iRead Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed are mine.Fleeing the Hajib by Sima Goel is at once a memoir and a history book. While sharing her personal story, Goel details the historical events taking place in her homeland, Iran, during the reign of Ayatollah Khomeini. Interwoven through her life story and her country's history are Goel's love of family and the beautiful childhood she experienced before her childhood was cut short.Although written almost three decades after her flight from Iran, Goel's memory recall is detailed and specific. As life changes around her, I can sense her fear, anger, and determination rising like steam from a boiling pot. Her desire is not only escape for herself but also for her family and the people of Iran. In so doing, Goel took great risks but could not deny the liberation she wanted for all Iranians.I presumed having watched news during this same time period I would have little to learn from the historical facts and details. However, having an inside view from Goel's life showed me I should never presume such again. Who knew that a woman wearing the hijab and the chador (forced into rule by the Ayatollah) left women with only one hand free. The wearing of these garments required the women to hold them in place with one hand, severely limitation their ability to do anything requiring more than one hand.Goel's cast of characters is quite large, and I feared I would lose track of who did what and when. Yet, her writing is so definitive in every respect this was not a problem at all. In every scene change or new chapter, Goel does not leave her reader behind. Instead, she carries you through the desperate journey she took decades ago.If you are a history buff or reader of memoirs, I highly recommend Fleeing the Hijab. There is much to be learned from the inside of Sima Goel's story of her flight from Iran. Co-mingled with her life story and the story of Iran is a quasi-thriller, filled with suspense, mystery, and intrigue.

Awesome Novel Type Adventure But True By Anatol Zinchenko "Spiritual Experiments" is aptly titled, for the author is on an awesome, never-ending spiritual adventure, and has apparently tried almost EVERYTHING. His story is full of seeming wrong turns that end up with amazing spiritual wisdom from innumerable sources. He had powerful glimpses of awakening even in childhood, and then experience with martial arts, severe illnesses, medication, meditation, fasting(54days on water – with amazing spiritual experiences and healing), South American spiritualism, fighting demonic entities, and meetings with several impressive Indian & Tibetan sages. He now has a powerful capacity for deep meditation – sitting for up to 15 hrs without a break. He has received many lessons and profound inner guidance from a living master, Mata Amritanandamayi (the ‘hugging saint’), who is an incarnation of selfless Love, not to mention an amazing humanitarian. This is a wonderful book!~ Anatol Zinchenko, PhD in Physics, long-time practitioner of TM meditation

Follow the Adventures of a True Spiritual Warrior By Margaret Cahill I think the title of this book only gives the slightest hint of the treasures and bravery that lie within. I personally would have gone more with something like ‘Spiritual Warrior plunges headfirst into the deepest and darkest fears thrown up by the quest for Enlightenment’. At the very least. I think the magic words ‘Don’t do this’, or maybe ‘Don’t do too much of this’ apply to the wonderful Matias Flury at every turn. There must be those of us who have wondered what happens should we practise pranayama techniques too intensely. He finds out for us. Or if we were to fast somewhat over-zealously? Matias is there. In a dazzling and nail-biting journey where he spares us nothing of the emotional cost and torment it causes him, we are taken from his native Argentina where he was clearly destined for a spiritual path early on, through pilgrimages to India and beyond and witness meetings with venerated figures who give willingly of their love and their wisdom to help him further along the path. Don’t think this is just about breathing, yoga and meditation. Oh, and fasting. Did I mention the fasting? There’s a lot of that. Matias also ventures into that really big area of ‘Don’t do this’ and becomes involved in exorcism. Didn’t the film ‘The Exorcist’ get to Argentina or something? However, as with all his challenges he ventures bravely where the rest of us are far too scared to explore, and comes out the other side, somewhat battered, but with a big smile on his face; he knows that the light within him is shining that much brighter for having had the courage to confront the demons who want to sabotage the next level of his spiritual growth. And then he fasts. Thank you Matias for your immense courage and your amazing energy. And by the way, anyone on a spiritual journey needs this book. Buy it. Now.Reviewed by Margaret Cahill, author of Under Cover of Darkness: How I Blogged my Way Through Mantle Cell Lymphoma

Many spiritual aspirants who write about their spiritual search give us a long narrative on their Teachers and their Experiences, but here we have a novel difference, a contemporary Odyssey. The Argentinian Matias Flury is at heart a genuine courageous adventurer, and describes his experiences, as well as his conclusions, in a dramatic and thrilling search for the Ultimate Truth. He describes, in graphic detail ,his meetings with the' Hugging Mother', Amma, Sri Werner, the highly respected Satsangh provider from Tiruvannamalai, a real contemporary Avadhuta, who lives in a cave at Arunachala, and then the famous Rimpoche at Daramsalah, After recounting his conversations and adventures with these great Spiritual Luminaries , he gives us his findings, and tells us all that he has learned on his arduous spiritual quest. This book is fascinating, and very enjoyable to read, presenting an informative overview of the Spiritual Journey, and the Author's valuable conclusions. This book is certain to prove very helpful to any Spiritual Aspirant who is searching for Enlightenment.Alan Jacobs, President Ramana Maharshi Foundation UK
