In the following account of the life and works of Sir WILLIAM HERSCHEL, I have been obliged to depend strictly upon data already in print--the Memoir of his sister, his own scientific writings and the memoirs and diaries of his cotemporaries. The review of his published works will, I trust, be of use. It is based upon a careful study of all his papers in the Philosophical Transactions and elsewhere.

A Rare Treat for Astronomy Enthusiasts: Herschel Comes Alive By Ken Korczak Let me be the first to admit that a biography of Sir William Herschel published more than 130 years ago, and written by a pedantic intellectual is not going to have a wide appeal among a general audience today. But if you are like me, a lifetime amateur astronomy wonk, then this free Kindle ebook will be a delicious treat. The author, Edward Singleton Holden, was an American astronomer of some accomplishment. He served as director of Washburn Observatory in Madison, Wisconsin, and was also a professor of mathematics at the U.S. Naval Observatory. One of the things he is most famous for is announcing the discovery of a third Martian moon - which, alas, turned out not to exist. But Holden was an extremely prolific writer, and not just in the field of astronomy. His list of publications is impressive and amazingly broad in scope. He was clearly a significant scholar of his day. He was born in 1846 and died in 1914.In this short book, Holden all but gushes as he paints a portrait of Herschel that borders on worship - but this is hardly surprising since the majority of the documentation Holden draws from are the writings of Herschel's beloved and slavishly devoted sister, Caroline, who held her brother on a stellar pedestal of Olympian proportions.Still, Holden also supplies plenty of further documentation in the form of letters written by luminaries who knew Herschel, or who only met him just briefly, only to be flabbergasted by his uncanny charm, enormous charisma and truly authentic modesty despite his world-wide renown and stunning achievements.Herschel was German-born, but spent most of his adult life in England. It was his brilliant talent as a musician -- both as composer and performer-- that quickly elevated him into the highest tiers of English society. He spent his early career in Bath, which as the time was a vibrant center of culture - a place where artists, intellectuals, high-society and super-well-connected aristocrats gathered to celebrate the pinnacle of British civilization. Herschel was also a master of languages. His native tongue was German, but he spoke perfect, accent-free English, as well as French, Italian, Latin and could at least read Greek. But astronomy and stargazing were Herschel's deepest passion -- his obsession. In his quest to constantly "see deeper into space than any other man," Herschel became the indisputably finest maker of reflecting telescopes in the world, which he built by hand. He ever strived to construct larger and larger instruments, culminating in his 40-inch-mirrored behemoth, which was the largest telescope on the planet for decades to come.Today, Sir William Herschel is best known as the discoverer of Uranus - the first time in the history that another planet beyond Saturn came to be known. To say that this was a monumental accomplishment is a vast understatement. Since the beginning of science in ancient times, it was almost an article of established religion that there were, and could only be, six planets. It was the Divine order! That there might be one more - well - it is difficult for us to imagine today the paradigm shattering implications it had on the world of the late 1700s.His accomplishments range far beyond the first man to discover a new planet, however. Herschel was more than an observer, but a formidable theoretician. His ideas on the distribution of stars and other objects, such as nebula and globular clusters, helped the scientific world envision a new model of the universe. His work with double stars and variable stars was ground-breaking.The main things I take away from Holden's treatment of Herschel, however, is something I never knew about the great man before - that Sir William Herschel was flat out one of the nicest, sweetest, charming, most charismatic and beloved scientists ever to live.

Although I'm not that fond of reading via the Kindle, I did find it to be an interesting book and a good companion read to the DISCOVERERS OF THE UNIVERSE by Michael Hoskin. It was well-researched and filled with many quotes by and about William Herschel -- and it gave me good, solid insights about what made this brilliant astronomer tick!

I was watching a Hollywood film covering the same time period and found it overly hyperbolic and depressing in its focus on people who were making horrid life choices, so I retreated to this book for a more realistic, appealing experience.

History has a bias. Depending on the time and social attitudes, historical figures rise and fall in the popular imagination. Some gain recognition they never deserved, while many of those who achieved greatness are forgotten.

Jasper O’Farrell was the Irish immigrant who surveyed and mapped San Francisco, Sonoma, Benicia, and Stockton. O’Farrell’s maps are so accurate, surveyors continue to refer to them today; yet this man’s contributions to California history have been all but forgotten.

Surveying in the 1800s was a dangerous task. Angry over O’Farrell’s changes to street corners and locations, a San Francisco mob once tried to lynch him. He survived to serve as state senator for the vast Sonoma District and made an unsuccessful bid for the position of lieutenant governor.

The father of six children, O’Farrell speculated in gold and silver mines, survived a vicious scandal, and was an early environmentalist who fought to preserve California’s iconic redwoods. O’Farrell does not deserve to be forgotten, and thanks to the efforts of historian Frank H. Baumgardner III, he can reclaim his place as an influential force in California’s storied past.

By Norv I rated this 3 (it's okay) as the subject matter is interesting. However it is poorly written and very disjointed, making it very hard to "get into". The author jumps around a great deal bringing in facts that oftentimes do not relate to what is being discussed in a paragraph, and jumps forward and backwards in time. I purchased the book to gain perspective on the surveying of O'Farrell and it succeeded in that. But an easy read it is not and it should be edited by someone who could make it into a manageable read.

Fifth generation Californian assesses "Blood Will Tell" By Frank Baumgardner As a fifth generation Californian I found "Blood Will Tell" a compelling read, so much so that I purchased two additional copies for other family members. Mr. Baumgardner's story telling is excellent, many fascinating stories that make the unfolding of California history, e.g. surveying boundary lines which pleased many and angered others sometimes leading to deadly duels. Character and personality development gives meaning to the characters, especially the main character, Jasper O'Farrell, in the face of chaotic migration to the Gold Rush era with its lack of law enforcement. I would give the book 5 stars but there are quite a few typos the publisher did not take out so 4 1/2 stars. Otherwise, I highly recommend this valuable book of California history. -----Don Scully

As Neil Armstrong first-footed the moon, the author and her husband Bob took their first steps into the past to solve a mystery that had haunted her father all his life: who were his mother and his maternal kin? Through the pages of this illustrated and factual book we follow them as they prove that a conspiracy had prevented him from discovering his maternal roots! At times they are led (in a way that neither can explain) in a new and more promising direction and Bob insists that “someone up there” is guiding them. Piece by piece, like a giant Victorian jigsaw, the evidence forms a fascinating picture, but one with a hole at its heart – a hole that will not be filled until the baffling mystery is solved.. Do they ever solve it and complete the picture? After ten years research in North Wales, a new piece of evidence and a distant memory cause a sudden change in venue which reveals the reason for the conspiracy of silence and the staggering truth about his mother.

That is a story based on fact as to how a child was born into a royal family - which could have caused a war in 19th century Europe. The child was exiled to the UK.Piece by Piece tells how the family history was researched to find the truth. Irene's grandmother was that child

Way better translation than the previous volumes By DoctorWhy Volume 3 of the light novel that finally catches up with the anime. 7 are currently out in Japanese. Though volume 1 and 2 were sometimes translated very... strangely, the translator is getting better. I would say this feels more professionally translated by a pretty large margin compared to the previous volumes. A translators job is not to instill their own touches into a work, but to almost not exist while keeping the content as close to the original as possible. I hope they continue to improve with the future volumes, and only wish they would release them more quickly.

I watched the show a while back and just couldn't wait for a season 2 so I decided to jump in on the books and I'm so so happy with this series. Even already knowing what's gonna happen just reading this still gives me chills from the pure intelligence of the writer and characters alike. This is where the end of season 1 leaves off so I'm excited to see where it goes from volume 4. BUY THESE BOOKS!!! SUPPORT THE SERIES!!!

Then one day, out of nowhere, Coleman the Cat showed up at Augie's nest. That was when everything changed for Augie. The two struck up a rather unusual friendship, and what follows is how Coleman helps Augie deal with his fears and his insecurities. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Delightful story of overcoming fear! By Splashes Into Books This is a delightful children’s book with vivid, appealing illustrations and tells the story of Augie, the bird who was afraid of heights. Even after his Mum and sister show him how to fly from his nest he is too scared to do so. He knows he can fly from one side of the nest to the other but he just won’t leave the safety of his nest. When he’s visited by Coleman the cat he’s still too scared to fly away. This is the beginning of an unlikely friendship between the two and this is when everything changes for Augie. To find out what happens, you’ll just have to read the book yourself! This is a sweet story of unlikely friendship and support enabling Augie to leave behind his fears and achieve his goal. It shows that you shouldn’t always automatically assume the worst about others from gossip you’ve heard and that working together can help you succeed. It is told in an easy to relate to manner and the illustrations really enhance the story, bringing it to life. I really enjoyed this story and, as a parent or a teacher, could easily use it to help children understand that it is important to make your own mind up about others and to keep on trying if you want to succeed at something. It also shows that different people are ready to do things at different times - and this is not wrong, just everyone being an individual. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this beautiful children’s book. Thanks to the author for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

150 of 182 people found the following review helpful. hated the main character. *spoilers* By Jessica Sotelo (Angie & Jessica's Dreamy Reads) If I'm being completely honest, I didn't love this book. I'm not even sure I liked it. But to explain myself, I have to include major spoilers, so read on at your own discretion...Before everyone starts throwing things, let me be clear. I love love love a good love triangle. I love a bad boy. I love cursing and bad language and dirty sex. I love an angst-ridden emotional roller coaster. I love darkness and pain. I love my heart to break. So before you think I read a book outside of my genre of choice and then berated the crap out of it, let me be clear: this was SO right up my ally. It just... wasn't it for me...First off, I hated Cathy. And when you hate your main character, when you hate the sound of her voice and her inner monologue, I'm not sure where you can go from there. From the age of 18, at that party, where Ben was nothing but a stand-up respectful, honorable guy and wanted to wait to have sex with Cathy in a romantic, respectable way, and Cathy pitched a tantrum, dressed and danced like a skank with Ben's friend who she'd never met, just to try to make Ben jealous... Honestly... I can not be Team Cathy after that juvenile display of deplorable behavior. 22 year old, law school bound Ben should have dropped Cathy like a hot potato right then and there. But he didn't.And maybe that whole episode was supposed to allude to how Cathy would handle stress later in life and act out on it instead of dealing with it head on... and maybe it was supposed to show how Ben would love her through it despite her flaws... but it dropped Cathy down on my respect meter significantly. And speaking of Ben... I loved Ben. Ben was the only ray of light in this whole dark mess. But when Ben finally, after the whole big fight, and after Cathy's tantrum, decided after all that happened to do Cathy doggy style on a dresser in the upstairs bedroom of a rowdy party... well that did not seem like consistent behavior with the Ben I had come to know and love. This is not something Ben would do. Not his first time with Cathy, not just a day before declaring his love for her... he'd save the doggy for later. Just sayin... So with that said, I proceeded to read while subconsciously looking for holes in the story.Arsen. Now, I will repeat. I love a bad boy. I will, without fail, always always always root for the bad boy in any given situation. Arsen is now the exception to my rule. Arsen is an idiot and a jerk. I get that he's supposed to be younger than Cathy, early to mid-20s. I get that he is a sexy, wealthy playboy. So do you mean to tell me that no where in that privileged upbringing, no one taught him some tact and etiquette? You don't drop the f-bomb in front of complete strangers. You don't talk about who else you hooked up with and why and when and how in front of a woman that you are friends with but secretly pining after. I don't know if the author felt that the overuse of the f-bomb was necessary to convey Arsen's masculinity, or his womanizing personality... but it was just that: overused. The overuse made me roll my eyes and it all went from being sexy dialogue to cheesy, gouge out my eyeballs with a fork annoying.Maybe it's my fault that I bought into all the hype on goodreads and facebook about how intensely emotional this book was. But it took way too long to develop, in my opinion. Things didn't pick up until after the 40%ish mark. If I was one of those readers (which I am not!) that abandons a book out of boredom, I would have. But alas, things did pick up. The drama increased and my hate for Cathy multiplied exponentially. Now, don't get me wrong, I sympathized with her loss and her pain. But to put any of the blame on Ben for why the marriage was crumbling was just wrong. He did what any husband in that situation would have done, he stayed strong despite his own pain, he tried to remain positive and he tried to convince Cathy to do the same. But Cathy, once again, decides that the sun and moon rise and fall around her, and she does whatever she wants, despite who she hurts. Now, everyone and their mother hated Kiera because of how wishy washy she was between Kellan and Denny. Cathy knocks wishy washy out of the ball park. I understand the whole loving two guys synopsis. But the whole "I love Ben so much" (blink) "I love Arsen so much" (turn page) "I love Ben"... I mean, really. Atleast mull that over a bit. It was LITERALLY, as soon as whoever she was with stopped touching her for 2 seconds, she was madly in love with the other guy. Yet she showed no remorse EVER. Atleast Keira felt badly about what she did to Denny. This chick needed more therapy than Crystle can offer up, she needs to be committed. And calling Amy for advice and then arguing with her because she didn't like what she heard... the selfishness of this chick knows no bounds. Get over yourself. I started to almost think that maybe she couldn't have a child because she wasn't selfless enough to care for one. She wanted a baby more than she wanted anything... including a good man. I just can't find it in myself to like her or want good things for her.My favorite part of the book... the part of the book that pulled me in, and the only part of the book that I had any real emotional connection with, was Ben's emotional breakdown upon Cathy's final admittance. That was heartbreaking and I cried... like real, actual tears. He would have, undoubtedly, forgiven Cathy on the spot if she had shown even an ounce of remorse. But of course she did not.And to top off my already tucked off cake, Cathy doesn't even bother to figure out who fathered that kid?? I mean, come ON! Arsen... ok, fine. He said he didn't want to be a father. We know it was a lie, but if Cathy was basing her actions on what she knew, then Arsen wouldn't have been involved with her or the kid anyway, so atleast you have the truth. But to not find out the truth for Ben's sake? That guy wanted a child and a family just as badly as Cathy did. He suffered those losses just like he did. And she didn't tell him?? That's probably more dispicable than the affair.I was happy with the ending. I was glad that she and Ben ended up together, because ultimately that is the ending I hoped for. But then the epilogue came along and ruined that. I was kinda pissed that Arsen is made out to be some kind of hero at the end, suddenly putting everyone else's happiness before his own. Really, Arsen? Where was your sense of selflessness when you told Cathy to get on her knees in your bedroom. Give me a break. And the fact that Nadia is his makes me even more mad. But whatever... it is what it is...Maybe buying into the hype set my expectations too high. Maybe I'm just a critical reader and hard to please. I don't know why I didn't love this book. I do know that my love or hate of a book is based on how I feel while reading it. I don't have to love the outcome of a book to love the story. I actually live for how many painful tugs my heart feels while reading a book. I look for turmoil and pain and heartbreak. And I know how I was supposed to feel while I read Arsen... I was supposed to feel emotionally torn for Cathy, I was supposed to feel how difficult this life-altering decision is for her to make, how hard it is to choose one love or another. But that's not what I felt. I felt anger toward her for being so selfish and putting herself in this situation to begin with. I felt utter disdain for this chick who would go hook up with her boyfriend in a closet at a party while her husband practically begged her not to. I could not sympathize with the main character, and I think that obviously affected how I read the entire story.Arsen is the fire and Ben is the rain... and Cathy should be shackled in a basement somewhere and not allowed to experience the weather.

26 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Incendiary! By Ana Rita WARNING: this book contains cheating and graphic sexual contentNow that you've been warned, let me start by saying that 'Arsen' by Mia Asher is not your typical NA/romance, in this broken love story we meet: Cathy, the anti-heroine that you will love to hate and charmer, gentleman, caring, supportive, Ben - her 'perfect' husband.' They met when they were in college and have been together for eleven years. When we first meet Ben and Cathy they are dealing with an extremely difficult situation, Cathy is really vulnerable, doubting herself and losing hope. That situation leads her to feel emotionally detached from Ben and their marriage.Arsen' is told almost entirely from Cathy's point of view and it switches back and forth from past to present. In those 'flashback chapters', we follow some important moments in Ben and Cathy's relationship. As a reader, I'm not a fan of instant gratification, but in this case I struggled a little with the slow pace in the first half of the book, but I also understand the author's option and its importance to the story development. That said, once you hit the 50% mark it's really difficult to put the book down. So, in the meantime, through her job, Cathy meets Arsen, the tormented rich playboy. They are instantly attracted to each other, he's a few years younger than Cathy and she is captivated by his carefree attitude. Arsen is cocky and shameless and pretty straightforward about his intentions towards Cathy and although he never stops teasing her, once he discovers she's married, he steps back. Despite the intense sexual tension between them, eventually they become 'friends'.I loved Arsen and his filthy mouth and I 'swooned' everytime he called Cathy - 'Dimples'."There's a twinkle in his eyes as he lowers is smiling mouth to whisper in my ear, "Chill, Dimples. I'm just teasing you..."Without giving too much away, there is an important development that renews Cathy's hope in her marriage with Ben, but Arsen remains in the back of her mind and eventually there's a turning point and some irreversible decisions are made...Is it wrong? Is it Hot?"People say that if you play with fire, you'll get burned. Well, when it comes to Arsen, I not only want to get burned, I want to be incinerated"This is not an easy story to read, it's really intense, heartbreaking, angsty, controversial - it evokes extreme and conflicting emotions in the reader. Cathy is one of the reasons for that - like I've said before she's an anti-heroine - deeply flawed, she's selfish, immature ... I think I've never hated a female character with this intensity and that's one of things I loved in this book because it presents a challenge for the reader.Another element that I really liked was this story's unpredictability. While I was reading, 'Arsen' I had absolutely no idea of what was going to happen and in the end I was really, really surprised. So, my final question for you is this:are you tempted? If the answer 'yes' I only have one advice to give you:Keep calm and read 'Arsen' by Mia Asher*ARC kindly provided by author, Mia Asher, in exchange for an honest review*Full review here: [...]

You want to stop reading it b/c it's getting to you too much. You try. You put it down. You can't. You can't not pick it up and finish it. You must finish this heartbreaking love story. Story of love & pain & loss & heartache & fear & lust & faith & LOVE.Cathy is broken, so broken she truly believes she is a broken shell of a woman and doesn't believe she is enough. She has a history of miscarriages and it just continues to break and destroy her & her marriage. Until Arsen.Until Arsen- she had a happy marriageUntil Arsen- she had BenUntil Arsen- she thought things were perfectUntil ArsenArsen...ARSEN....ugh........I want to like Arsen, I really do. I just don't.... I can't, it's not in me.I didn't want to like him and truly now I can not admit I like him. Yes he is alph and yes he is hot...yes he is 24 years old. At times I called him a whiney littls se* sissy who complained about his daddy and the pot full of money. But as you read Arsen truly grows on you like wild fire. He is there for Cathy at her darkest hour and even though I didn't want it, I prayed it would go another way. Sometimes you need an outsider to come in and let you see the light. Arsen was Cathy & Ben's light. A beautiful heartbreaking light.......The things he says in front of Ben, I...Me...Megan wanted to go in the book and kick his balls; Which btw is exactly what I told Mia!!!!BenBen is perfectBen is wonderfulBen is swoonworthyBen is caringBen is devaststatedI must first show some MAJOR Ben LOVE. He had my heart from the first time he spoke. I am Team Ben all the way. He is a total gentlemen in public but heavens behind closed doors.... He has it going on. He is so swoonworthy and loves Cathy so very much! I want to take him a fix him and rid him of all the heartache that has been placed on him.CathyCathy wants to be a motherCathy wants to be happyCathy wants to be lovedCathy wants to be repairCathy. OMG Cathy!!!!! I want to shake you so you wake up. Ben. YOU HAVE BEN. Srew Arsen..ha yeah got that, right :)There are times I felt sorry for Cathy, I tried to understand where she was coming from. Many times I couldn't stand her and MANY times I hated her. I don't like her choices. I can't stand her for her choices. But they are HER choices. She will now have to live the life she has created. This book had me twisting and churning and squirming in my seat. I was back and forth messaging with Mia and other readers. I felt every emotion. I feel like i've been punched in the gut. I'm hurling over trying to catch my breath. At the end of the book I stated that I was going through the grief process. And it is truly the perfect way to explain my feelings. You have such happy memories of Ben & Cathy's relationship, you are on cloud nine. Then a fire starts...perfectly named Arsen and kills those memories. In which I turned to hate, hate for so many things said and done. Next, Pissed PISSED for things that should have been said, PISSED for things that shouldn't have happened. I stayed pissed for the longest. I am probably still pissed. Sorrow. Sorrow for the closure, for the loss, for the tears, Sorrow for the END.Mia's first book is to die for. If you want to sit back, kick your feet up and read and not feel a thing, well this book is not for you. Arsen will make you FEEL EVERYTHING. The Good. The Bad. The Ugly. It will make you want to scream and yell and want to fix it. You can't. I tried. This is a hard story for anyone b/c it deals with miscarriages and failing marriages and cheating. It was extremely hard for me to process. I knew it was going to be a hard read, I KNEW IT. I braced myself for it. Well I thought I braced for the impact Arsen would give. I was soooo wrong. Beautiful job Mia. Arsen: A Broken Love Story, by Mia Asher

From the Author I lost my daughter and at the same time I lost my hope. I felt as if I no longer had a place here. I was in a dark cave, and no one around me knew what was going on with me.  After I finally admitted to myself that I needed to make some big changes and turned my life around with God's help, and my family praying and encouraging me to live my best life.  I wanted to tell what I had been through and be a hope to others that might feel they are no longer valued and has gone into their cave.  Writing this book was a joy for me.  I feel as if  I am giving back by helping others to find their way. I feel that this book will make you asked yourself  a very important questio.  A question that was asked of me "When Will You Take Charge Of Your Life".  That is what my son asked me.  It made me angry and it started me thinking.  I had forgotten how good God had been to me, and I was angry at Him because he did not save my daughter. Through Prayer, Meditation and some positive moves. I found my way back and anyone can do the same.  Nothing can stop you. It does not matter how old or young, rich or poor, you are. No matter what your race is or religion. You can Win if you apply yourself.  I pray that this book will help you. God Bless.

A narrative of relevant events before, during, and after the murder of Meredith Kercher on November 1, 2007 in Perugia, Italy by retired Forensic Engineer Ron Hendry. A major focus is on missteps and misconduct by the police and prosecution that led to the murder conviction of two exemplary university students, Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito. As the narrative progresses, the Author points out an assortment of failures by the police in their investigation and interpretation of the crime scene. The Author then describes several instances of misconduct by both the police and prosecution during the illegal interrogations and the later all out effort to develop evidence toward the conviction of the two innocent students. Following the narrative is a section of arguments with regard the bogus evidence, indicators of the innocence of Amanda and Raffaele, a fundamental investigation flaw, and recommendations for improvements in laws to better protect the innocent. Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were tried for the murder of Meredith Kercher and related charges three times with two guilty verdicts and one innocent verdict in between. Along the way they spent four years in prison for crimes they did not do. Their long legal battle abruptly ended on March 27, 2015 when Italy’s highest court vacated the latest guilty verdict and declared they were innocent. The Author is retired Forensic Engineer Ron Hendry, who in June of 2010 was provided extraordinary access to police crime scene videos and photos. His analysis uncovered several important findings overlooked by the police investigation with one being that the victim’s bra had been torn off by hand instead of being cut off. Another important finding was that sloppy handling of bloody boots by the police had led to deposits of blood under the victim’s bed that the police later claimed had been made during a cover-up of the crime immediately after it occurred. A series of articles containing his findings and reconstruction work were published in the Injustice In Perugia www.injusticeinperugia.org website in the fall of 2010. The full set of police crime scene photos analyzed by the Author in 2010, are now available on the internet. Selected police crime scene photos are used to illustrate points and actions depicted in the narrative. Author Ron Hendry published an earlier e-book entitled “The Single Attacker Theory of the Murder of Meredith Kercher” in August 2013 which was focused on a detailed graphic description of the night of the murder. He has previously written and published a sports history book entitled “Athens Day in the Sun”, which is available in hardback on Amazon. In 2014, he authored an eight part investigative series on the murder of Kent Heitholt, which was published on the Justice for Kent Heitholt Facebook and the Injustice Anywhere sites.

He lays out the complicated issues in an easy to understand format so that the farcical behavior of the original investigators is utterly revealed. For the reader, it's a chilling snapshot of how science is used to railroad innocent people.

An Investigation Gone Bad By Thomas Mininger Forensic engineer Ron Hendry provided a reconstruction of Rudy Guede’s break-in using police photographs back in 2010.http://www.injusticeinperugia.org/RonHendryindex2.htmlThe UK documentary team’s video demonstration of the wall climb compliments Hendry’s analysis.http://www.injusticeinperugia.org/EnteringCottageThroughWindow.htmlThe author proceeded with a theory of Guede’s murder of Meredith consistent with the crime scene evidence in his book Single Attacker Theory Of The Murder Of Meredith Kercher. Now, Hendry provides a cautionary tale of how a case can get off on the wrong foot with conclusions, arrests, and reputations placed on the line before the hard evidence is even analyzed. He details how the investigation started with negligence and only one theory, then snowballed into layers of misconduct, self protection, and tabloid profiteering. The investigators arrived on the scene and concluded the break-in was staged because the climb seemed too difficult. They followed only this theory which meant the murderer(s) must be insiders. By the time the bloody palm print IDed cat burglar Rudy Guede, who was on a five week burglary spree, three innocent people had been arrested with worldwide fanfare, and the authorities found it impossible to admit their mistake. What followed were police lies, massive crime lab fraud including perjury, suppression of evidence (denial of discovery), tampering, prosecutorial tunnel vision, and biased judges creating increasingly distorted fantasies, trying to contort Knox and Sollecito into a burglary gone bad.DNA exonerations over the past several decades demonstrate that prejudiced prosecutions like this are a worldwide problem. For anyone who has tried to piece together the investigation from inadequate media articles, Hendry’s professional forensic investigation skills provide the thorough analysis. This book is indispensable for understanding how a case can go so wrong.

By Noel Dalberth Ron Hendry does an outstanding job detailing why this case has never been about truth, justice or innocence. Rampant cover up, mishandling of evidence, declaring 2 innocents guilty before any concrete proof could be established and protecting the only man who committed this murder. This is a travesty of justice that continues to reflect the incompetence which goes beyond the scope of this case.

KINGSLEY AMIS

Fahrenheit 451 (Spanish Edition), by Ray Bradbury

Review “Aterrador en sus implicaciones… el relato de Bradbury de ese mundo enfermizo, que guarda muchas y alarmantes similitudes con el nuestro, es fascinante”. —The New York Times

By Soccer Mom This book, Fahrenheit 451, is about a fireman in the future, an age of mechanical hounds and virtual reality families that argue about nothing, who instead of putting out fires, starts them instead. He burns books and the houses in which they are found. He is very happy with his job even though all of the citizens are frightened of him, until he meets a girl who is "17 and crazy". His walks with her and her strange ideas and interesting views make him question his job. He starts to steal and read books, which change his life forever.I really enjoyed reading this book. I absolutely love reading (anything) but especially love books about what our future could be like. This book, 1984, and Brave New World, among others, are books that imagine and predict an awful future (Imagine a world without books!) which is even more interesting because it kind of gives us a warning. The author, Ray Bradbury, has a really interesting writing style. One characteristic writing device he utilizes is description. He shows the reader exactly what is going on by giving lots of detail, for example "climbed slowly back into bed, arranged the covers over his knees and across his chest, half sitting". I think he does this to both create tension and to prolong and emphasize a moment. At this point in the book, the reader is wondering if Montag, the main character, will be safe, but they have to wait. Another unique characteristic of Bradbury's writing is how he uses lots of metaphors and similes ("face as bright as snow") which add more detail, making the scene easier to imagine. A third characteristic is that he writes about really scary happenings in pretty, flowery, flowing language which makes it seem less frightening and more normal. This helps the reader really get into Montag's mind because they aren't so scared off.I would recommend this book to anyone (over age 12) because it is a book you have to have read to live in today's world and understand what people are talking about and referencing. Also, this book is just a really good read that can be enjoyed on many levels, as a suspenseful story, or as a warning about our future. There are also themes of love and camaraderie. Everyone can find a character to identify with.

Rourke Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is a science-fiction novel set in a futuristic United States where books are illegal and firemen set fires, rather than put them out. The story follows fireman, Guy Montag, as he battles himself, the people he to whom he thought he was closest, and society in a race against time, and a race to preserve the knowledge shared in books. Written in a serious tone, with inklings of sarcasm, Bradbury creates a short novel that has a straight forward message. What makes the book five stars is the message that it shares with the reader, especially since it was originally written in 1953. There are many parallels to today's society that have the potential to make a reader change his/her lifestyle. It warns readers of the consequences of censorship, of life under a government that controls all of the information, and warns of how shallow we may become in a self-centered, media-focused, reality-show-based society. After reading the book it is easy to see how one might feel guilty about turning on the television for an evening of brainless entertainment, for this is what the book is preaching against! Some people are turned off on this novel because so many of the characters appear so shallow and flat. That is, I believe, Bradbury's intent. He intentionally created characters that are superficial and fake to reinforce his ideas of what it would be like to live in a society such as this one. He illustrates the metamorphoses of one of these flat characters in Montag, who changes dramatically from the beginning to the end of the book. Other than short stories, I haven't read any other Bradbury novels, nor have I ever been a big science-fiction fan. However, the style of writing is very similar to other pieces I've read with long sentences that are full of imagery, but still simple in their meaning. He makes it easy for the reader to escape into the distorted reality of his settings. In the case of this novel, it is not clearly stated where it takes place, but I imagine a city on the east coast of the United States, like New York or Boston. Although Fahrenheit 451 is a fairly quick read, I would recommend it to readers who are mature enough to handle the underlying messages of this book. When I've spoken with people who read it quickly, just because they heard it was a good book, they were often disappointed. If you like to be pushed in your thinking and perception of reality, you will like this book because it will challenge you to look at how you are living your life.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One of Ray Bradbury's Best By Nina Munteanu A classic tale by a master of the craft of metaphor. Bradbury uses the fireman in a world where they MAKE fires instead of putting them out, to explore the phenomenon of censorship in a world obsessed with being "good". Scenes in his book were reminiscent of what the Nazis did in Opernplatz, Berlin. In fact, of this event Bradbury made this poignant statement: "It follows then that when Hitler burned a book I felt it as keenly, please forgive me, as his killing a human, for in the long sum of histroy they are onein the same flesh." I met Ray Bradbury and he is a gentle, humble soul.

Jenelle Embrey, a single mother of two boys from rural Virginia, never expected to challenge corporate giant Chrysler. She’d rather forget the horrific events of October 5, 2012, when she witnessed two people die in a fiery crash. Embrey, however, isn’t one to walk away from her conscience. She adopted a new mission to proclaim the victims as heroes saving other innocent victims from the same fate. Embrey would scream the details of their unnecessary deaths to the world.

Embrey sought support to force Chrysler to publicly admit flaws in the design of certain models of Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Jeep Liberty SUVs that catch fire in rear-end collisions because the gas tank sits directly in the crush zone. She gathered nearly 130,000 signatures on her online petition to Chrysler, united other safety advocates, and discussed the issue on major news outlets across the country.

Dangerous Jeeps and Me is the story of one woman’s quest to right a wrong, all the while working her full-time job of 15 years, caring for her two teens, looking after a cousin with intellectual disabilities, and volunteering at her local animal shelter fostering numerous kittens. As word of Chrysler’s callous disregard for safety spreads, Embrey hopes to prevent more unnecessary tragedy.

A crusader is born By Jim Hood Jenelle Embrey was horrified by the fate of a family that was involved in the same chain-reaction freeway crash that destroyed her car. Rather than just feel bad about it, Jenelle got mad and became a crusader for safer cars and a more aggressive effort by government regulators who are supposed to put taxpayers' safety first. This first-person account traces the vital role she played in bringing the nation's attention to the flaws in our government's sorry efforts to ride herd on automakers.

Told in first person by someone who witnessed, first hand, what happens to certain year Jeeps when rear ended by other vehicles. Very graphic pictures. Definitely, NOT for YOUNG readers and NOT for the squeamish or faint of heart!Factually written with a lot of research. A must read before you purchase another car. So sad to know, proof positive, how these big corporations see humanity as a means to wealth but care not one wit about the safety of the people their profits are coming from!

After writing and directing for the local municipality, corporate documentaries with a few television inserts thrown in, she goes out on her own and forms her own video company. She works with her ‘rainbow crew’ and travels across South Africa. They meet Mandela, endure a terrifying helicopter ride and empathize with the forlorn Bushmen. By Liz Wiffen I Beta read More Truth, Lies and Propaganda and found it to be an enlightening book, delving into the realms of African culture and the mine field of filming documentaries in South Africa. The book visits humour, sorrow, joy and a plethora of other emotions all intertwined with the writers own memoires.Lucinda (I really felt I was able to be on first name terms with the author, as the writing was so engaging) paints a picture of South Africa that many would shy away from, or totally reject. She introduces us to her world of script writing, presenting and production. On one of her first projects a house disappeared overnight! You will have to read the book to solve that mystery. On her travels Lucinda visits morgues, hospitals and a whole host of venues that provide a sometimes amusing, sometimes though provoking, but always fascinating arena. The façade of some towns are revealed: In Durban hanging flower baskets adorned the streets only to be taken down immediately after the filming stopped, to be returned to the safekeeping of the council nurseries. Had the council not done this the baskets would have disappeared into the night as many before had done. The author does not veer away from controversial subjects, approaching them methodically and objectively. She sees African traditions and superstitions; encountering ancient beliefs juxtaposed with contemporary beliefs, leading to some controversial opinions. All in all a mind opening and thought provoking book which tells of the struggles of the ordinary people of South Africa (both black and white), along with the author’s struggle to make a life for herself and her daughter in an ever changing country and male dominated industry.

By All Things D Finding herself in the Monty Python parrot sketch in front of a Job Centre clerk in London Lucinda desperately misses South Africa and its sense of danger so we are transported back to this rich land of many mysteries. This is an excellent memoir of Lucinda’s incredible career in filming documentaries and TV reporting in South Africa. She interviews some of the world’s top leaders as well as local officials.Lucinda describes her Monday morning feeling ‘I jumped out of bed and said YES it’s Monday!’ But make no mistake; this is not a life of glamour! From filming rural schools with bullet holed doors to smelly abattoirs and urine diversion toilets to the recycling of graves in Durban to the horrors of AIDS and the lack of education - Lucinda covers it all. This is a great eye opener. If you never get the chance to visit South Africa at least read this memoir! This really is a fascinating read and you will learn so much about South Africa from the wildlife (Honey Badgers and so on) to the African mind set on so many levels, democracy ‘African style,’ (the tremendous influence for example of the chief) to how the people live and how the economy of Durban operates. Through her work Lucinda tells us about traditional medicine.. from shriveled monkey brains to desiccated lion’s paw. She tries to convince communities to adopt cremation and we learn about the reycling of graves. The greatest accolade of her career for me was meeting Nelson Mandela. ‘I felt afraid of him. He was one man I would not want to cross.’

This book starts with Lucinda back in England with her husband and daughter and she is trying to find work and sign on for benefits. Having lived in SA for so long England has moved on without her and she doesn't quite fit in. After talking with her daughter they move back to SA without hubby. Life isn't easy at first but as she gets work again and starts her own production company she is HAPPY. This book lets us see what it takes to produce documentaries, etc. The hours are insane and the fact that she has to write the documentary and film what she thinks the client will like is amazing. Lucinda takes you thru her life back in SA. I found the most interesting parts for me were seeing thru her eyes the transformation of SA. The people are so proud of what they have and made an effort to have it look and be the best. The schools was a very interesting part and many parts were eye opening. How they treat people they have displaced, what they do with juvenile delinquents, how do you get a driver's license (as in the USA--where did you get your license--Kmart), etc. I am sure anyone will enjoy this book and don't forget to read book 1 of Truth Lies and Propaganda.
