Evil Paradise is based on the author's unique and moving life story. Jane Schwalger-Wyatt was born the illegitimate child of a wealthy plantation owner's nephew and a traditional village girl on the exotic Polynesian island of Samoa. Born between two cultures and classes in the turbulent post-colonial years, and unwanted by either parent, her future looked bleak. After Jane's birth, a pact was made between her grandmother and her wealthy great aunt. Jane spent her first ten years as a village girl raised by her grandmother, with her identity kept secret. Although adored by her grandmother, she endured hardship, brutality, and sexual abuse. Upon her grandmother's death, Jane escaped to what she thought would be paradise on earth: her rich aunt's estate, but she discovered that it held terrible secrets. In time, Jane learned about the savage history that blighted the plantation and the bizarre secret kept hidden upstairs in the mansion. After a failed reunion with her father, she was sent to her mother in New Zealand, where she was rejected yet again. Whilst battling overwhelming obstacles to make a life for herself, Jane's second child was diagnosed with profound disabilities. How she managed to endure proves an unparalleled feat of human endurance and faith. She clung to the few that truly loved her, striving to make a life for herself with fierce and inspirational determination. Jane Schwalger-Wyatt lives in Brisbane Australia, and is writing the sequel. "The end is not the end but a new beginning. Evil Paradise is a tale with the timeless theme of good versus evil, the triumph of faith and hope over fear and violence, making it a compelling and uplifting story for all." The authors masterful use of imagery made me feel like I was there with her through every step of her journey! A surreal journey of a man who is searching for purpose and for happiness. Joe, a 36 - year - old advertising copywriter for a slick New York agency, feels disillusioned with his life. He starts dreaming of a mysterious man, seeing him on the street, and hearing his voice. Joe decides to listen to the Man and so he waits on his stoop, day and night, for instructions. A local reporter takes notice, and soon Joe has become a story, a media sensation, the centre of a storm. When the Man tells Joe to ''go west,'' he does, in search of meaning. Waiting for the Man is a compelling and visceral story about the struggle to find something more in life, told in two interwoven threads - Joe at the beginning of his journey in Manhattan, and at the end of it as he finds new purpose on a ranch in Montana under the endless sky.

Waiting for the Man, by Arjun Basu

Review “That it’s hard to put down is a credit to Basu’s perfect sentences and clear sense of direction . . . I want to say that it’s reminiscent of Hemingway, but in a way that sounds nothing like him. It is, however, the perfect style for this novel, a retelling of the American Dream that Hemingway would never have understood.” — National Post“Although this is the author's debut novel, his experience at shorter forms (Squishy) shows; fans of his 140-character Twisters on Twitter will be pleased to know that the author's talents are on display in this novel.” — Publishers Weekly“Waiting for the Man is observant and clever, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Basu toys with his readers, pushing us away to point out the distance at which we hold the characters and stories that populate our pages and screens, and reminds us there is always more to the story.” — Katia Grubisic in Montreal Review of Books"Waiting for the Man is captivating, aggravating, enlightening and redemptive." —Winnipeg Free Press“Perhaps the dark subtext to this entertaining novel is that movement is impossible, even for many seemingly privileged boys . . . Waiting for the Man hides a chilling truth under its light-hearted surface: the American Dream is a trap.” — Quill & Quire

About the Author Arjun Basu is a writer and editor. In 2008, he published Squishy, a collection of short stories that was shortlisted for the ReLit Prize. His stories have been published in many literary journals, including Matrix and Joyland. He also writes 140-character short stories he calls Twisters on Twitter (@ArjunBasu), which have won him a Shorty Award, lots of press, and a worldwide following. Arjun lives in Montreal with his wife, son, and dog. This is his first novel.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. From Chapter 1Here Comes the SunIt was as if I were floating. This was what I first noticed. The original thing. This floating business was a sign. Of something going on inside my head. I would find myself off the ground, hovering, and then moving, slowly, effortlessly, seeing my own self encumbered by the normal laws of physics, everyone and everything still governed by the rules and regulations that make things run. I was part of it and was apart. My floating self felt new and improved. Smarter. Fresher. More alive. But it would never last.I would be in a meeting, again, thinking up ideas and products, dreaming up the inconsequential things that make the world go round. Thinking up the reasons and pathways and trajectories of desire. Creating desire. And I would leave the meeting. And then I would return. I would hover above myself and observe my own ticks and mannerisms and then return to the normal operations of things. This began happening with an alarming kind of regularity. It was the floating that started me off. The dreams didn’t come until later. And by the time the dreams took over, I was well on the path. My road. To wherever. To this place. But I’m getting ahead of myself.I’m a simple person. Everything follows from this truth. Simplicity is a state in which my life has been lived. I grew up in a fake Tudor home in the deepest suburbs of New Jersey, the only child of immigrant parents. I went to a good high school; achieved good grades; attended college; got the degree; landed a safe, conventionally challenging, well-paying, and vaguely sexy job in advertising. Our next-door neighbor knew some people at a boutique agency and helped me get the position. I moved to Manhattan. I was creative. I could make people laugh. I was sufficiently cynical. Engagingly sarcastic. It’s the only job I’ve ever had. The only one I remotely wanted. My father never made me work while I was in school. He wanted me to get good grades. I missed out on flipping burgers, working as a lifeguard, selling shoes, rites of passage in my community. Learning exploitation as a child is a license for abhorrent behavior in the future, I think. I missed that. Being exploited. I worked long hours at the agency, the kind of schedule that precludes a social life. I jumped into this thing and I never thought much about it. I was relatively successful. I was good at thinking up ways to sell things to people. To consumers. To instill want where there had been none. To make the essence of a brand match the core of your being.I wasn’t the kind of person who defined himself by his work. I didn’t know many people who did and the ones who did were all older. There is a generational divide in this kind of self-definition, though the quality of the work has more to do with it. Perhaps in our age, there are more jobs but more bad jobs as well. When asked, I did not tell people I was a copywriter or in advertising. Even to the question of “What do you do?” I would describe myself as a frustrated Mets fan, as a drinker of a particular beer, as a lover of uncommon passion. I was sarcastic. I answered this question, as common in this city as “Hello,” with sarcasm. I’m not sure if that was shame or a defense mechanism of some sort. It was a sign, surely. What else could it have been?My work was something that should have offered more. Perhaps I should have accepted what it had to offer. For a long while I did. And it rewarded me very well. And this sense of reward, and the obviousness of it, protected me from the real world. From the real world as it existed around me. I worked within an energy, the kind of energy that came from satisfaction, youth, and the knowledge that we were going to survive the recession, or whatever it was being branded lately, because we were small and nimble and successful.I was without a plan, I did as I was told, I showed the proper level of ambition. I drank with the right people. I received promotions and raises and these things made me work harder. I figured this was the key to the system. To how things functioned. The circle of life. It’s an instinctual way to live. We live unimpressive lives in order to be impressive. And we do impress people. That’s the thing.[. . .]The problem was I didn’t believe anything. I didn’t want to pin my melancholy on age. Because that’s what it was. Melancholy. I was listless. I lived my life without living. Without feeling alive. And that night alone in bed, regretting what had never been with her, drunk most certainly, I started floating. And then, more alarmingly, I started having these dreams. I don’t know what else to call them. Visions maybe. Nightmares. This thin black man in a floppy straw hat, dressed right out of the seventies, looking for all the world like a TV pimp. Like Huggy Bear from Starsky & Hutch. I never watched that show, it was before my time, but I remembered the character and now he was haunting my dreams. And this man, sometimes, later, would ride in on a white horse, a gigantic white horse with a mane that looked combed and neat and clean. A good-smelling horse. Bathed. It smelled supernaturally clean. And the Man had a smile you couldn’t outrun. It was the size of the world. I fell into it.I had the dream every night. In different permutations. We would talk. Sometimes he would watch me. Stare. From across the room. In one dream, he watched me as I sat in the office and listened to a colleague debate the sexiness of his new iPad. One of my colleagues kept repeating that he didn’t need human companionship anymore. His biological imperative had been fulfilled. In another dream, I walked with the Man along the banks of a foul-smelling stream and we debated something archaic, like the reasons behind the British Invasion, or McCarthyism, things I knew little about and cared for even less. Things from another era.And then I stopped floating. And the dreams came to me at all hours, a bully astride me whenever I closed my eyes. And then, after a week of this, he spoke to me. Or, I stopped speaking to him. He became a kind of monolith. Dressed like a black pimp from the seventies. He was the speaker and I the listener. I absorbed. I saw him walking toward me, slowly, strutting more than walking. I’m sitting on my front steps talking to some neighborhood kids about the inanities of the latest Mets fiasco and I see the Man walking toward me. The kids scatter and he leans close and whispers, Wait. And his voice has reverb and echo and sounds vaguely like Isaac Hayes. With that gentle smile, he just tells me to wait. I ask why and he says, Because. I could smell the horse on him. I’m not sure I knew what a horse smelled like then, let alone a clean one.And I kept dreaming. Longer dreams. I touched him. And when I did I felt myself falling into him, being crushed and embraced by this good-smelling man. He told me to wait on my front steps and he would come and things would get better. Things will get better. That’s what he said. Better than what? I asked. But he did not hear me. Because our relationship had changed. My role was not to speak.I lived close enough to the World Trade Center to think he was talking about life in the most general way possible. I didn’t think he was speaking about me. I could see him imparting in me the wisdom for some major civic improvement project. I saw his instruction through the lens of my workspace. Because I never considered my own life. I figured I was living. Even though I knew I wasn’t. But that WTC thing, with all the fighting and the politics. I mean, the site was still a tourist attraction. My neighborhood had been through a lot. I breathed in that dust. Somewhere inside of me, I could still taste the burning embers of those buildings and everyone and everything inside of them. That dust lives on in all of us. And through the crazy times on Wall Street right to the crash, that dust lingered, never changing, resilient in its own sad way. I didn’t think I needed anything better. I hated my job but everyone hated their job. No. In the dream’s promise, I saw something larger than myself. The next night I had another dream. And then the night after that I had it again. And for another week I had this strange dream of the Man walking up to me and telling me to wait for him. Promising a better world. And one night I was working late, alone in the office, trying to finesse the overall theme for a series of ads for a car company out of China launching an ambitious but poorly planned invasion of America, and I heard the Man’s voice. Over the office intercom. I walked around the empty space. Past the light boxes with the black and white photos of the staff. The whiteness of the space. The glassed-in conference room. The rows of blank, humming computers. It was after midnight. And then I heard it again, as clear as if he was sitting across the desk from me. And again, it told me to wait by the steps. It commanded me. Over the office intercom the gentleness of the dream had been usurped by a tone of authority. And the next day, as I lay in bed wondering if I should hit the snooze button for the seventh time, he came again, not in a dream but as a voice that seemed to come in through my window, carried by the wind. From Chapter 2In a Big CountryI walked here. And here is nowhere even by Montana standards. That’s not to be insulting. It’s just true. It’s not New York. And that’s a part of this place’s charm. It’s a selling point. If the concepts of “somewhere” and “nowhere” are human constructs, or at least must be considered in relation to human activity, then this is, indeed, nowhere. Or irrelevant. We’d be considered off the grid if we didn’t have electricity. But the power lines come here. They reach this place, webs to a civilization far beyond. In the literal sense, we are very much on the grid. In many other senses, too. Here is a luxury guest ranch. A five-star spa. In the midst of sky and mountains playing host to wealthy people with a nostalgia for the Old West that only goes as deep as their rooftop plunge pools. Where just running out to go to the store means hopping in a car, or a pickup truck more like it, and hoping your tank has enough fuel to drive a little while. The idea of walking to anything isn’t stupid, it’s impractical. There’s nowhere to walk to.I didn’t walk all the way here from New York. Let’s get real. But I walked here.I spent three days walking here and despite my Grizzly Adams appearance, or maybe because of it, I don’t know, and my smell and the dirt on my clothes and my shit-covered hair and even though I admitted to walking here, which should have made someone nervous, I managed to talk myself into a job in the kitchen. I found myself a simple job. Peeling. Apples, potatoes, onions, carrots. Edible flora that need peeling. That was my job.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting book By Balaganesan Swaminathan This is an interesting fiction that flows well with clever and witty statements. If you have read 'Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance' and liked it, you will like reading this one as well. This book analyzes impact of external expectations and media influence in our life. Through its main character, it takes an introspective view on the meaning of career and life.. The language is easy to follow. Sentences are short and to the point. The use of a foreigner to highlight the cultural differences and the vastness of the USA landscape is clever. The dialogues were witty. The main character has a sarcastic sense of humor, which is refreshing. The last few chapters went flat as readers can predict how the story is going to end. It feels as if the last few chapters were crafted to bring sizzle to the book. Why change the flow when it was going well? There are places, the author got carried away with an interesting word that stands out of the story.Despite these few minor shortcomings, Arjun Basu has written a good book which is worth reading.

For four years Jefferson Davis was the central and most conspicuous figure in the greatest revolution of history. Prior to that time no statesman of his day left a deeper or more permanent impress upon legislation. His achievements alone as Secretary of War entitle him to rank as a benefactor of his country. But notwithstanding all of this he is less understood than any other man in history. This fact induced me a year ago to compile a series of magazine articles which had the single purpose in view of painting the real Jefferson Davis as he was. Of course, the task was a difficult one under any circumstances, and almost an impossible one in the restricted scope of six papers, as it appeared in The Pilgrim. However, the public according to these papers an interest far beyond my expectation, I have decided to revise and publish them in book form. This work does not attempt an exhaustive treatment of the subject but, as the author has tried faithfully and without prejudice or predilection to paint the soldier, the statesman, the private citizen as he was, he trusts that this little volume may not be unacceptable to those who love the truth for its own sake.

¿Bailamos?

A really great story line, well developed characters and the kind of story that you don't want to put down. A great book for the beach or to read in the yard when you come back from the beach. I love Cape Cod so the setting is perfect. Can't wait for the second book in the series.

Howling wolves and raging storms By JPS Review first posted on Amazon.co.uk on 23 August 2014This is the second volume of Chris Wraight's trilogy on the Space Wolves. While he is better known for his superb "Battle of the Fang" (the best Space Marine Battle Novel that I have come across up to now), and this volume is not really up to the same high standards, it is nevertheless more than acceptable. It also contains some interesting features. The reason for my little upfront reservation is hinted at in this review's title. It is a bit of a rant because, of course, you would expect the Space Wolves to howl, growl and grunt, just as a Stormcaller is expected to do just that: call storms! Having mentioned this, I could not help feeling that in both cases, there was some degree of stereotype and repetition mixed up with conventional but still nice pièces about the hard life on Fenris, becoming a Space Wolf, and the mystic of the Great Wolf. While the plot pits the Emperor's Space Wolves against the Forces of Chaos led by the Death Guard, the former also have to deal with a rather unsympathetic and treacherous Cardinal and his Ecclesiarch forces. Relations with the Wolves' allies are increasingly tense, especially when they see the Cardinal and his men acting in a very high-handed way and when they realise that they have something of a hidden agenda. I will not mention anything more of the plot except to state that, although not extraordinary and not entirely original, it was nevertheless quite good. The main strongpoint of this book, however, resides in the cast of characters, some of which I particularly liked. One was the Cardinal, who is as awful as you can expect him to be. He made me think of the kind of fat, corrupt and self-centred prelates of the 15th and 16th century in Europe whose behaviours were at least partly responsible for the emergence of the Protestant Churches. Another rather superb character is Njal the Stormcaller himself, one of the most powerful Rune Priests of the Space Wolves. A third is the Mycelite, who is very deceptively old, seems decrepit, sounds awfully nice and has a very interesting story to tell. Then you have the wolf-pack and the relationships between its members whom you have already come across in the previous volume and which I strongly recommend you to read before this one. Finally, the book also displays the Sisters of Battle with the interesting character of its Canonness De Châtelaine, and Annaroeva, who is just as though and dedicated to her duties of Planet Governor of a major hive and forge world as you would expect a highly competent Imperial Planetary Governor to be. Also included in the book are some interesting devices and monsters with the Eclesiarch's "Penitent Engines" being the most prominent of the former and the Death Guard and forces of Chaos having a rather wide selection of the later. With regards to the action, if you love magic and fights using the power of the Warp, then you will enjoy this volume. Those who like stories featuring assaults on space hulks will also get a treat. Just about worth four stars, since fractions cannot be used.

In fact, it was a mild feeing until the end, at which point I pretty much hated it.***yep, spoilers alert***So here's my issue...I'm not really a Space Wolf, but the end seems so far fetched I can't accept it. Gunnlauger is maybe the most spineless, doubting leader to ever leave Fenris. Anytime Ingvar feuds with him, Gunnlauger, a Wolf Guard, backs down with his tail between his legs. Njal, a living legend of the Wolves, orders a warp touched Hunter to be executed who even killed several other Wolves. But with a simple "he's one of us", Gunnlauger leads his whole pack into what amounts to dereliction of duty and desertion, even attacking other Wolves in the process. Baldr went bug nut crazy once and was given a second chance. Hen he kills his own comrades. So it's a three strike rule when becoming a Traitor? Baldr should be executed, Gunnlauger grow a spine, and Ingvar set off as a Lone Wolf and seek out the answers he seeks alone. If anyone disagrees I'd be happy to discuss :)

This book had tons of action and ton of story with a surprise ending that you would not believe in a warhammer 40k book where they kill planets for defying them. The ending set the stage for the third book and I can't wait.

BUT, I have never read a book with more typo's, missing words, missing letters, extra words, extra letters, transposed words, transposed letters, extraneous letters, extraneous words. And some completely wrong definitions. For example:"You can access the minimum and maximum values of each integer using the min and max properties." (OK so far)"Examplelet minValue = UInt.8min // minValue is equal to 0, and is of type UInt8let maxValue = UInt.8min //minValue is equal to 255, and is of type UInt8"You know what he means but it slows you down.It is very difficult to read. If you have twenty years experience in other languages you will know what is meant in spite of the afore mentioned shortcomings but it's still hard to read.

Lauren Francis-Sharma's 'Til the Well Runs Dry opens in a seaside village in the north of Trinidad where young Marcia Garcia, a gifted and smart-mouthed 16-year-old seamstress, lives alone, raising two small boys and guarding a family secret. When she meets Farouk Karam, an ambitious young policeman, the risks and rewards in Marcia's life amplify forever. On an island rich with laughter, Calypso, Carnival, cricket, beaches and salty air, sweet fruits and spicy stews, the novel follows Marcia and Farouk from their amusing and passionate courtship through personal and historical events that threaten Marcia's secret, entangle the couple and their children in a scandal, and endanger the future for all of them. 'Til the Well Runs Dry tells the twinned stories of a spirited woman's love for one man and her bottomless devotion to her children. For readers who cherish the previously untold stories of women's lives, here is a story of grit and imperfection and love that has not been told before.

'Til the Well Runs Dry, by Lauren Francis-Sharma

From Booklist *Starred Review* On Trinidad, in 1943, Marcia Garcia, a splendidly talented, 16-year-old seamstress, is struggling to feed young twin boys left in her charge. Remarkably accomplished first-time novelist Francis-Sharma makes it clear on page one that Marcia is strong, courageous, and resourceful. She is also French, Portuguese, Spanish, black, and beautiful, and she has a galvanizing effect on a young, confident Indian policeman, Farouk Karam. Their love should have been joyous, and they should have been able to raise their four children in harmony. Instead, their relationship is poisoned by racism, poverty, gossip, and corruption. Farouk’s parents vehemently object to their relationship, Marcia conceals horrific family secrets, and the obeah woman Farouk goes to for help betrays them. Francis-Sharma’s consummate portrayal of her stubborn, conflicted characters subtly illuminates the rigidity and treachery of Trinidadian society. Yet when Marcia goes to America in 1962, after her oldest daughter gets tangled up in a dangerous plexus of politics and drugs, she is confronted by far more brutal forms of prejudice and abuse. Francis-Sharma’s spellbinding, intimately detailed, psychologically lush, and suspenseful tale of racial and sexual trauma, hard work, love, and family devotion makes personal the injustice people endured in the years leading up to the civil rights movement in both multicultural Trinidad and segregated America. --Donna Seaman

64 of 69 people found the following review helpful. Deep, emotional, complete. Loved it. By A. Allen Review based on ARC.Oh man, how even to review this one. I signed up to get this one because it had something to do with Trinidad. That was really all that motivated me. Otherwise, it sounded kind of trite... ya know, "multigenerational" "multicultural" "blah blah blah." But my mom is from Trinidad and, unlike the author of this book, I have NOT heard much from her about her home-country. I was hoping the book might give me even the slightest of inside looks... And boy did it.I would not describe this book as "multigenerational" or "multi-cultural," even though those are both accurate descriptions. The issue I have with those phrases is that they tend to accompany stories that don't offer much else beyond the obvious "that generation doesn't get it" dynamic or "look how different and yet the same these cultures are!" And those can be fantastic books, but I find that relying on the cheap tricks often make the story seem... well, a little cheap. That was NOT the case here. Lauren Francis-Sharma created a compelling, interesting, fast-paced, deep, involved story with an undercurrent of.. like, gut-truth. I didn't feel as if I were reading some fantasy creation of someone with no idea of what real life was actually like. I felt like... I felt like I was maybe sitting at a kitchen table somewhere with someone's grandmother who was telling the story of her life. And what a story. Ever so briefly: Marcia Garcia ("Mah-see-ah Gah-see-ah") lives in "the Bush" in Trinidad (i.e., the wrong side of the tracks...) with the boys she cares for. Her mind is nowhere near romance or the other frivolities of life when Farouk spots her and determines he must have her. Farouk is, of course, from the right side of the tracks, but he's young and impulsive and makes no mind of the potential cultural impact of his choice. And so begins Marcia's life.I mean. It covers so much ground. Years, peoples, families, children, parents, siblings, crime, countries, slavery, passion, anger, etc. etc. etc. And Francis-Sharma manages to give each element her full attention. As with all truly excellent books, describing it too much would do it injustice. This truly excellent book is being sent to my mom... maybe we can have a little Trini discussion once she's read it...Highly recommend! For all of the reasons indicated above and because it's just a good book.

The story is told in three voices: that of Marcia Garcia; her lover, policeman Farouk Karam; and their second-born daughter, Jacqueline.Marcia Garcia is a teenager trying to single-handedly take care of 3-year-old twins who are not well. Her parents and sister are gone, and she sews to make enough money to keep the small family afloat. Then she meets policeman Farouk. Their story is unique - not at all like I thought it would be. Instead of being fireworks and the fairy-tale-like happily ever after, Farouk and Marcia (it's Mar-see-uh) share a turbulent relationship - where superstition and a kind of black magic, secrets left unshared, and trust shattered and not rebuilt - all work against them, despite hearts that truly do seem to beat for and reach out for each other. Marcia, Farouk and their family felt real and believable - and their troubles made their story come alive more. Without giving away too much of the story, let it suffice to say the lingering message I took away from their story is to look around and realize what's priceless in your life and appreciate what you have before it's too late.Hearing Jacqueline's sweet voice explain events in the story proved an effective and wonderful addition to the story. Jackie helped brighten up the story, give it more vibrant color and hope, and underline the goodness of her parents when they make bad decisions.Overall I enjoyed the book. Something is always happening - whether it be the mischief one of Marcia and Farouk's four children has found and immersed him- or herself in; or some danger or threat caused by Farouk's asking a strange witch-like obeah woman for help ensuring Marcia will always love him; or the fresh tragedies and trials for both Farouk (when a murder threatens his job) and for Marcia (when she moves from Trinidad to the United States for a new life). The characters are likable, colorful and very human - I kept wondering if Farouk was good or bad, and hadn't really made up my mind (and maybe Farouk wasn't sure about himself either) until the very end. I didn't care for the ending (it felt abrupt and unfinished), but it's a minor complaint and wouldn't keep me from recommending the book to someone who likes a different kind of love story - raw, real, tragic.

36 of 41 people found the following review helpful. A Tortured Relationship By LH422 From the description I was expecting this to be a love story, but it is not really that. This is more a family saga, following the family of Marcia Garcia through several decades of struggle and perseverance, as she tries to keep her family together. Much of the book focuses on Marcia's relationship with her children's father, Farouk Karam. The relationship is an odd one, it begins with love, but Farouk's parents disapprove, and what results is a coupling in which Farouk is mostly absent, but drifts in and out of Marcia's house, bed, and life. It was never entirely clear to me why Marcia continued to put up with Farouk. It is always clear that he loves her more than she him. There's some suggestion that the potions and teas of an Obeah woman keep Marcia attached to Farouk. In addition to Farouk, Marcia must deal with corrupt members of her own family, including a politically powerful but morally bankrupt uncle. Marcia winds up in the United States, falling prey to various of the injustices facing immigrants. This book gives a vivid picture of life in rural Trinidad. I preferred the first two thirds of the book, that take place in Trinidad, rather than the section in the United States. The Trinidadian setting is one of the book's best parts. My favorite character was Farouk and Marcia's daughter, Jacqueline. She is the child with the most promise, and she becomes the de facto head of the family. She is also the one who feels the effects of her family's choices most deeply. When all was said and done I found myself still puzzling over Marcia and Farouk's relationship. If there are many definitions of love, than this is perhaps one.

Mi interesso all’arte da molto tempo.

How to Pass as Human is an attempt on the part of the world's first android to understand the irrational, unpredictable, eclectic creatures known as human beings. Written in the form of a field guide, complete with sketches, graphs, flowcharts, and other reference materials, Android Zero (aka "Zach") has compiled a variety of useful information for future androids on how to pass undetected as human beings. Along the way, he also attempts to solve the mystery of his own creation with the help of Andrea, a human female who has taken an interest in him that may be more than friendly, and eventually leading him to "meet his maker" and discover the surprising purpose of his existence.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The only thing that I don't like about this book is that I didn't think of ... By Kalafya Brown It's a Douglas Adams kind of thing, except that this is science fiction in the most literal sense in that it is both solid science and solid fiction.I knew Nic at MIT; he and I were in the same department and had friends in common. The only thing that I don't like about this book is that I didn't think of it first.Nic's analysis is priceless, and even sometimes recursive, for instance when Android Zero (a fictional intelligence) analyzes humanity's perspectives concerning fictional intelligences and then derogates humanity's self-serving or anthropomorphic myths concerning artificial intelligences. This is not only great fiction, but great science. You must realize this when you read this book. Of course, enjoy the fiction, but second, realize that this is scientific analysis from a certain perspective. Android Zero clearly explicates his limitations and calls for future research. This is what we do, as scientists.Nic skillfully but implicitly analyzes humanity from the perspectives of cognition, evolution and sociology, and most readers will not even realize that this is happening.Kudos, man, kudos. You rock. The naysayers must realize that Nic is a smart guy, and when he plays upon comic book tropes he does it intentionally. This book is far in advance of the current state of affairs. It brings cogent analysis of the human condition to bear, and tempers this with a sarcastic pop disposition.I would even go so far as to say that this book presents a new paradigm in science fiction.A paradigm in which the author and the reader collaborate to determine the real future. For a true devotee of science fiction, what could be better?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. very cool Sci-fi book with totally unique vantage point By MarSar1976 I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book but heard good things about it so I bought it. It’s both a novel and a ‘fake’ guidebook to humanity in one book - although they relate. The diagrams and insight into people were really funny and overall and I enjoyed the sci-fi stuff which had some good surprises and also made me think about whether we’re programmed to be the people we are or we learn to be that way. you get a lot for your money out of this book and will probably find it a blast

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Fun Look at an Android Tale, A Fresh Look at Humanity By Daniel J Degnan Kelman’s How to Pass as Human is always clever and funny, often insightful and laugh-out-loud comical. Much has already been said about the page-turning sci-fi narrative, an action-packed love story full of inventive twists and turns, as well as the android’s field guide, a fresh and wonderful look at humanity through the eyes of a super-brilliant, newly formed “life.” In both, Kelman shifts between an unsparing critique of the more base tendencies of humanity and its amazing potential.Less has been said about the book as a pseudo-psychological and philosophical look at the human condition, boiling it down to its core essence of optimizing our ability to survive and reproduce, only oversimplifying at times to keep it fun. The text is full of humorous but cutting observations of everything from work, office politics, and technology, to gender differences, reproductive habits, and love. The section on “Breaking Rules” emphasizes that to appear human one should break rules whenever possible. For those interested in more than the great narrative and entertaining field guide, there is plenty of compelling, deep stuff here. This reader particularly enjoyed the Venn diagrams and flow charts – “How to Choose a Religion” and “How to Understand the Basics of Human Mating Communication” are especially fun.
